  • What's the deal with this model? Is the 3060 restricted on it? Any issues with single channel RAM?

    • +1

Not sure to be honest. Ordered it myself cause it seems to be an absolute bargain.

It does have a lower power 3060, so not as good as the Legion 5/5 pro series. But, it is significantly cheaper. However, the RAM issue can fixed by adding more if necessary.

One other thing that isn’t great is the screen at 45% NTSC. But, this can be forgiven for the crazy low price.

    • -1

Would be recommended to add a second stick of DDR4 3200 SODIMM RAM, even a 4GB stick would work, just so you can get full performance. Especially considering computers with ryzen processors love dual channel RAM.

      • -3

Dual channel will only work if you have two sticks of the same capacity and similar speed (if one is slower than the other, the system will sometimes downclock the faster one to match the slower one).

        • Thanks for the reply, wasn’t aware that dual channel requires sticks of the exact same capacity.

          • +8

@ChineseElectronics: xyron is wrong, it'll still be dual channel. The caveat is that you'll only benefit from dual channel up to the worst performing bottleneck. For example, using your situation of 4GB SODIMM with the 16GB SODIMM already in the laptop, you have dual channel in the first 4GB of each SODIMM. If the computer has to search in the final 12GB of the pre-installed SODIMM, there's no corresponding area in the other DIMM to also search.

        • Dual channel is nothing to do with clock. It can work with different size memory. Definitely 4gb is not recommended

    • +3

The LCD panel is the problem: 45% NTSC in this case is 72% sRGB. Response times would also suck.

  • +5

Feeling sorry for those that bought in late April through the dealbots post 😢. This is a great price if you have an edu login.

  • would it worth $20 more for this? ryzen 7 8 core?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-series/ThinkPad-E15-Gen-3-15”-AMD/p/20YG005GAU?

    • +9

no RTX 3060 in that one…there's no comparison between the two.

      • ahhh.., thanks

    • Depends on what you're using it for. Integrated graphics I'm not a fan of.

  • not bad for $999

but keep in mind that the screen is certainly low grade. 90w 3060 isn't very high power.

but all things considered I don't think one can get anything better at this price. 3060 at 90w is nothing to be eschewed at, fomparing to 3050 or 1650 options at this price

    • +11

Been keeping an eye on gaming laptops and have yet to see anything match this deal in this price range. Laptops with higher tier 3060 and a better screen would be at least $1500 if not more. Though, there may be bargains later in the year or early next year after the release of the new RTX4000 series GPUs.

      • +3

Yet to see a laptop with a Hexa-core CPU, 3060,better screen and chassis under $999. You may get one with a 3050 around this price point and slightly more with a better screen for around $1299.

  • any deals for 14 inch?

  • +4

Cheapest rtx 3060 laptop of all time

    • +1

Pretty sure the nitro 5 10330H / 3060 hold that

    • +7

Honestly been waiting a year for a bargain like this, which is why it is my first post

      • +12

        Username check out

      • Hey, did you happen to get a screenshot of the price along with the model number please?

  • What's performance like compared to that Lenovo deal last December from Officeworks?

I don't mean GPU comparison, mainly performance for music production. CPU?

I remember that screen was much better, maybe the CPU but no GPU.

  • at what grade does school kids get an edu email?

    • +1

i got mine in yr 11 when i started tafe a few years ago through holmesglen. i think it depends

    • It's up to school policy. My daughter has got one from prep

      • oh ok, have to check with the school I guess..

        • Definitely up to school policy. Most would be year 7 (or earlier if it's a K4-12 etc school)

    • there is a way to get access. There's a generic splash page and you can chuck in the code.

      • which splash page do you mean?

      • mis.eq.edu.au

  • Anyway of getting access to this price if you don't have an edu email?

    • would like to know this too!

    • Yes, anyone?

    • +16

Stand outside a school and tell the kids I need your email address to buy a gaming laptop 🤪

      • Offer them a lolly in exchange. WCGW?

    • +2

Not sure if he/she/they is still doing it, but user doweyy used to be able to get people access

      • Many thanks for the helpful reply.

  • +6

Insane price for a 90w RTX 3060 and R5 5600H. Take my upvote!

All it needs is a second 16GB DDR4 sodimm slotted in and you're good to go.

  • +1

Lol why did i even bother to buy a computer when a laptop of this price is available.

    • Beats most low-mid range desktops too…

      • So this is better than a $999 gaming desktop?

  • Cheers OP, been holding out for a decent laptop since end of last year

    • Same. Was super tempted on the last Cashrewards deal, but this ended up being a better deal IMO.

  • Bought one, thanks OP.

    • Hey, did you happen to get a screenshot of the price alongside the model number, either on product page or checkout cart?

  • What would the wait be on this once ordered?

    • Says 2 business days to ship on my end. Hoping it means that that they have stock in Australia. I ordered it myself so hoping it comes soon

      • Ordered a Legion laptop last week, it said "ships within 2 weeks". A week after I ordered I checked the order details, the estimate ship date was September. I contacted support who couldn't give me a firm date so I cancelled it. Ordered a Dell G15 which shipped the next day.

Hopefully 2 days really means 2 days! :)

  • +1

Wow this seems like a crazy good price thanks for posting OP.

  • +4

Nice first deal OP. Amazing CPU, RAM, Storage and GPU to price ratio. A good contender for laptop bargain of the year

  • -1

How long until the battery runs out and you're stuck with the integrated GFX and 10FPS until the battery charges up to sufficient levels?

    • +3

What? You use gaming laptops when they're plugged in. They'll always be less powerful on battery. The point is you can pick them up in a backpack and take them anywhere, and use them as a laptop without needing a desktop + 2nd device

  • Should I cancel my Legion 5 pro with R7 3070 140W 32GB 1TB for $2127 or take this one instead? Don't need for gaming, mostly for video processing like DaVinci Resolve / Adobe Premier the screen on L5P is vastly superior though with 500nit and higher colour accuracy

    • +1

If you wanted to do video editing on this, you would definitely need to connect this to an external monitor. L5P has much better build quality, CPU (assuming 5800H) and GPU. Also pretty sure it would be dual channel rather than single channel memory. Depends on if the price is worth it to you.

      • Yeah good points, I'll stick with L5P as it'll also last much longer due to more beefy specs

        • +1

That’s a really good deal in its own right imo. Honestly can’t go wrong either way. I bought this deal cause I’m a student on a tight budget and wanted something that could game.

      • +1

As you said, I reckon chuck another 16Gb into this bad boy and it'll meet most editing needs. The 3060 at 90W seems to fall into the mid-range, which isn't too bad:

        https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3060-Mobile…

        • But the screen on this is a let down :( L5P is 100% sRGB and 72% NTSC + 500nit DV + 165Hz Gsync

          • +1

@FeZZa21: You're right, this isn't great in that sense. I'd be doing the editing on an external 1440P display anyway.

    • care to share the link for that L5P?

      • Got it via phone for $2,535 on the main store, so after cashrewards and gst reclaim (going overseas in July) will cost me $2127 total

        • nice .. seems a good buy to me .. better quality and all purpose laptop and has great resell value (should that be necessary). This ideapad has minimal resell demand/value in comparison

  • Is cashback valid when using that coupon?

    • Education store is normally excluded from cash backs. Don’t think it would be valid, but you can try.

      • +2

On personal experience, I would recommend you try.

    • I tried it and got an email that it tracked… let's see if it actually pays out though

  • -2

Yeah this is a great deal. Ditch the XBOX sx and grab this. More TFLOPS.

    • Are you saying this has more gaming power with a 90W 3060 than the console?

      • Considering the Series X is closer to a discrete 3060 Ti and 3070, I doubt it…

      • +1

It's closer to the PS5 probably.
        PS5 = 10.5 tflops
        XBX SX = 13 tflops
        3060 mobile = 9.7 tflops

      • I think it will be stronger than XSS, right? But not XSX.

But will you get same performance, if you play at 720p and use DLSS or AMD FidelityFX?

  • Anyone have this laptop as a work computer? is it too heavy ?

  • +1

    Great, I've panic bought a laptop. :P

    • +3

I ordered the laptop before posting the deal. Was scared they would run out of stock with how good the deal is

  • +1

How long do these deals stay active as I could not find an expiry?

  • -7

    Display panel kills the deal.

    • IPS at least. Could be worse.

      • I'm sorry, have ever used a panel with 72% sRGB in this century?

        • +5

Have you ever used a panel like that in a 999 bucks Laptop with 120hz and rtx 3060?

          • -7

@Dienk: There's been plenty, and some close to this price with a worthwhile panel.

This is a normal sale price now, and we've got new desktop GPUs in 6 weeks, 4060 mobile maybe as early as November-December.

    • For gaming it's more than adequate. For editing, just use an external display. You're getting a whole system for $999, when a 3060 GPU alone was nearly that price recently.

      • -1

I draw the line at 95% sRGB in 2022. Hell, I drew that line in 2000.

That's not even touching on the response times: this is not a gaming panel, it's just a shit panel.

        • Yeah generally me too. I even hate dithered 6 bit panels. But for the price this is really hard to pass!

          • @cnut: Would heartily recommend spending an extra $50-$100 to ensure a better panel.

            • @jasswolf: Please share a link with these specs with a better panel for extra $50-$100.

              • @okc0mputer: I am referencing value, not an active deal. Such laptops are now regularly sub-$1400, so you'll probably get something sub-$1200 next month, then cashbacks, etc.

                • @jasswolf: I couldn’t find anything sub $1400 for the price with a good display. The problem is that they are usually paired with a more expensive design.

I do however remember that the Kraken X15 (with 11800H, RTX3060, 16Gb Ram) with a much better screen went for $1499. But that has been sold out for a while.

There probably will be better deals with the release of new graphics cards, but hard to find better in the price range or even $100-200 more at the moment. Also, it’ll probably be next year before new GPUs come to laptops.

                  • @SleepyBargainHunter: Mid-year sales start in 2 weeks, this entire sales period is design to get the early crowd forking out a little extra for their aging inventory.

    • I actually tried bargaining for the higher end version with 5800H and better panel with the chat representative. Didn’t have any luck.

The panel is definitely bad. My reasoning for buying is that I can’t find a better specced laptop for the same price. It might even be reasonably competitive with some desktop systems for the price. I can always connect to external monitor if I wanted a better experience.

      • +1

Probably better off using the price difference and getting a gaming monitor. Or saving the money and using your existing one.
