Dyson V8 Origin Cordless Vacuum $459.08 Shipped @ Dyson Au via eBay

480
TOPITUP

Similar to this but cheaper: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/694935

You don't need eBay Plus.

I had a very hard time researching which dyson to buy. I narrowed it down to either a V8 and V10 but ended up getting a V8. There are 3 variants to this: Origin, Animal, and Absolute.

They are all mostly the same except the accessories, but you can also buy accessories after the purchase directly via Dyson or go to third party like Kogan. This is what led me to buying the Origin instead of the other two (I will buy the accesories separately).

Example of accessories:
- Dyson official accessory store: https://www.dyson.com.au/support/replacement-parts/vacuum-cl…
- https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/ultimate-cleaning-concepts-crev…

  • Is there much difference between a V7 and V8?
I own the V7 though it’s getting on, I did buy the attachment pack when it was on sale at Bing Lee.
I hope those would fit if I bought it

    • I think you can buy an adaptor or something like that. I don't think they fit out of the box.

      You don't want a V8 though if you already have a V7 it's not a huge difference.

      • Thanks, will wait for a deal on > 8

        • +2

          V7 is more of a battery upgrade on a V6, whereas a V8 is a suction/runtime upgrade over the V7.

    • +1

V7 = 30 minutes runtime on normal suction setting with non motorised head & 100AW suction (on boost)
V7 = 40 minutes runtime on normal suction setting with non motorised head & 115AW suction (on boost)
On hard floors pickup performance is similar, but V8 can clean deeper, significantly quicker.

    • It is possible to retrofit a V8 battery onto a V7 to give you better runtime.

V8 still going strong after 3-4 years..

have cleaned the filter once (probably due for another clean soon).

Sucks dust quite well, and battery life seems sufficient for a normal size 3 bedroom, 2 storey townhouse.

However if your whole house is carpeted, I would suggest getting v10 or above. The max setting does wonders on the carpet but kills the battery life significantly.

    • +1

I just opened the box, the manual says clean the filter at least once a month. Haha.

You can buy new filters for < $25 though.

My house is all carpet but it's a very small apartment.

      • +1

The filters are washable, so unless you overdo it, probably wont need replacement anytime soon. The motorized head has been known to rip up cheaper carpets, so be mindful of that.

I've had my V8 since release (6 years?), still works and all. Enough that I even bought a v8 carbon fibre not long after in addition to it. Think its somewhat better than the V10 in that you dont need to remove the stick/attachments to empty the bin.

        • +1

Washing the filters take ages to dry so a spare is a good idea

Got a v8 recently from one of these eBay plus deals, the cheapest price got got down to $440, but thought $460 was still a good deal (they were $499 at Myer on special).

Good product, didn't see the sense of paying $1000 plus for the newer/fancier models and just got an apartment. Wouldn't mind the motorised head attachment for couches etc though.

    • Yeah I am also eyeing of the mini motorised head attachment. The official Dyson one is $49 and the Kogan version is $30. I wonder if there's a lot of difference.

If I had a bigger house and family I guess spending more money on the vaccum ($1,000) would make sense. But I'll just save the money for now so I can buy a bigger property when sydney market crash? 😂

      • +1

for bigger house i would say go Miele c3 animal and then combine it with a v7/v8 Dyson for vehicles and areas that require more vacuuming than normal

      • Not sure, guessing just a different grade of plastic or the finish may not be as good when it clicks together (I assume)?
Would probably be fine I guess. $30 is fair, does that include shipping? Otherwise ebay has generic ones for ~$37

I've still got an older Miele bag vacuum to get out for more thorough cleans but hard to be bothered that often.

      • +1

Correction @TimApple - That's the Dyson US site. Per Dyson Aus site it's $60

Additionally - there's an updated Dyson anti tangle mini motorised head called the hair screw tool made for V15, same voltage and wattage as the previous model. although not officially listed as compatible, they do work on older V7, V8 & V10 models. The v15 hair screw tool is priced lower at $49 and avoids the issue of hair wrapping around it.

Note that any potential battery damage caused by using non official powered parts such like those sold on kogan may pose an issue if you need to warranty claim your Dyson.

        Hope that helps

        • +1

I think I'd prefer genuine if it's a decent price.

With that line of logic if the v15 head is not officially compatible for V8 then wouldn't it void warranty also?
Not sure how anyone would ever know you're using different attachments?

          Cheers,

          • +1

@G-rig: No, as the hair screw tool's power requirements are specced to work on all dyson cordfree units from v7 and up, it's sold exclusively as an accessory of v12, outsize and v15 and only officially sold as a replacement piece, rather than a retail extra accessory.

To my knowledge, there's no way to tell whether you have used third party tools short of admitting it to tech staff. Obviously I can't give guidance on that matter though

            • @Anthropomorphised: Thanks, either sounds good depending which one does the best job on couches etc. Usually a non Powered attachment would be fine but haven't had a Dyson before.

              Ta

            • @Anthropomorphised: Hi, after a bit of research it seems that the hair screw tool is the upgraded version and fine for the v8. Somebody commented that it has an 'extra 10w of power' which I found interesting.

Don't have any pets but would it do a good job dusting couches? I thought there may have been a simple dumb attachment that can get in down the back of Cushions, but perhaps they don't work like that.

Any chance of an upgraded cashback (shopback)?

              Cheers

              • @G-rig: correct, it is the upgraded model. Both the older mini motorised head and newer hair screw tool are rated at the same wattage, only thing to keep in mind is that the v12 version has a slimmer power connector so isn't compatible with other units.

If it's just crumbs, either tool may be overkill unless you want mechanical agitation. They're great for areas where grime is more ground in such as carpeted stairs and fabric carseats and mats.

No clue on cashbacks as I am not functioning on behalf of Dyson here, I'm just an employee relaying public info and my personal experience/advice.

                Hope that helps!

                • @Anthropomorphised: No worries, I ended up ordering the 'hair screw tool', newer and cheaper. Meant to suit the v8 (as confirmed abovementioned and a quick search).

Could be an overkill but just something to do couch cushions and crumbs etc is what I was after, doesn't seem like there are any simple/non Powered attachments.

                  Thanks

Anyone bought the unofficial battery's for a V8 you see on Amazon and Logan they seem have a bigger capacity than normal ones ,our original is nearly 5 years old but slowly going down hill and looking a possible replacement options

    • +2

I just today got the original Dyson battery only because of some really bad reviews of the replica batteries on Amazon. Dyson V8 is $109 free delivery + 2 years warranty. I can live with that

    • +1

I've gotten a larger capacity battery from Amazon and it's amazing. Max suction used to only last about 30 seconds on the old Dyson battery and I could only vacuum sections of my 2 bedder apartment.
But since the new battery I've never run out. It is heavier..and took some getting used to. Started off needing to 2 hand it. But just needed to build up the strength to use it one handed.

      • +2

Beware of aftermarket batteries, yes the capacity may be higher but they use cheap cells not designed for high powered devices (high drainage). It may last longer for the first 2-3 months and its downhill from there, I had to get it replaced 3 times within the 1 year warranty period. The original dyson batteries uses sony high drain battery cells.

        • +2

I've had mine for almost a year now with no issues. So hopefully I got a good one 🤞🏻

  • +1

What is the difference between the 3 variants: Origin, Animal, and Absolute?

    • +3

      Origin - combination tool only
animal - combination tool, crevice tool, stiff bristle stubborn dirt brush and mini motorised tool
Absolute - combination tool, crevice tool, soft dusting brush, mini motorised tool and fluffy hard floor head

    • +2

It is so baffling that it's very hard to know the differentiation. Dyson makes very bad product names. Anyway it's just the included accessory. Took a screenshot below and check out this video for the detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtRZ5JsGlu8

      Motrhead = Origin in Australia.

      https://imgur.com/ucZDSyc

      • +2

Hi Tim - Motorhead and Origin are different from one another.
The only motorhead currently sold is the V7 motorhead. This includes both the combination and crevice tools, whereas Origin units lack the crevice tool.
There are some different names and tool inclusions in overseas models

        • I see. I couldn't find a reference to V8 Motorhead anywhere in Australia. I was guessing Origin is the equivalent. It is very close though.

  • Yes I would also like to know the difference of V8 origin and the animal.

    • Origin = combination tool only
Animal = combination tool, crevice tool, stubborn dirt brush, mini motorised head

    • Dyson V8 Origin features Direct Drive Cleaner Head, Combination Tool, Docking Station, and a Charger. Dyson V8 Animal features Direct Drive Cleaner Head, Mini Motorized Tool, Mini Soft Dusting Brush, Combination Tool, Crevice Tool, and wall-mounted Docking station with a Charger

  • +1

Suggesting an edit to accessories - full list of official parts and accessories for Dyson V8 is available here: https://www.dyson.com.au/support/replacement-parts/vacuum-cl…

    • As an employee, do you see much difference between the dyson tools and the third party generic tools from Kogan and eBay?

      • +4

most common failures for non genuine parts in my experience are the following:
-Knockoff filters. These typically either restrict airflow too much, or lack sufficient filtration. This results in blockage warnings to avoid machine damage, or causes the motor to get dirty.
-Knockoff batteries. The official units have temperature, charge and voltage sensors to make sure that they don't charge when too hot, and deliver correct voltage to protect from damage to other components. In 3 years I've seen a (small) number of units with non-official batteries that seemed to deliver an out of spec voltage and damage the motor.
-Powered tools (i.e. knockoff fluffy, mini motorised, torque drive heads). Some of these draw too much power shortening battery life.

If it's non-powered tools, I imagine that there shouldn't be too high a risk as long as they're simple like the crevice tool.

(speaking as an individual, anything I say is my opinion or experience and not a representation by Dyson)
        Hope that helps

        • I see thank you! I think I will buy the mini motorised from Dyson official, but might get crevice tool somewhere else if I need it.

Has Dyson considered simplifying the product lineup so it's clearer? Even a lot of employees of David Jones, JB, Myer couldn't explain the difference to me. They thought V8 Animal has different motor than origin.

          • @TimApple: How much is shipping

            • @G-rig: I can see > $100 is free shipping, but less than that is $10 shipping.

              • @TimApple: That's the only problem, good if you could buy in store (or eBay) for that price as they aren't exactly cheaper.

          • @TimApple: Hi TimApple, sorry for the slow reply.

Unfortunately answering that question would be a breach of the NDA in my contract, however I think I can say that they are aware that the sub-models can be confusing. Anything is possible, and I for one would love to see a simplified lineup, I'm just not sure how it could be tackled with the number of niches to fill.

            All the best!

            • @Anthropomorphised: Tim passionate about his vacuums. The best thing I did was just buy one (v8)

  • Thanks so much for all your help! Is there also much difference between V8 and the newer ranges?

    • Yes there are a few differences, but as with all electronics, the difference might not matter to you.

This particular model is quite good if you have a small apartment and a car in my opinion. If you have multiple floors or big houses, and if you have a pet, definitely this could be an underpowered machine. Go for V8 Animal or a V10 instead.

I think above V10 diminishing return starts to happen. You pay $300-500 more but it wouldn't feel like those products (V11-V15) are 50% better than V10 or below.

Think of it like you buying SUV but you're a single bachelor. Or you buy the latest Macbook Pro but you only watch Netflix and browse Ozbargain on your laptop.

Happy to provide basic differences for performance betweeen models. This is ignoring tools
      V8 - up to 40 minutes runtime, 540ml capacity & up to 115AW suction
      V10 - up to 60 minutes runtime, 760ml capacity & up to 150AW suction
V11 & outsize - up to 60 minutes runtime, hot swappable battery, 760ml capacity for v11 and 1.9L for outsize. These can at times get over 60 minutes on eco mode during hardfloor cleaning from experience but is not officially rated as such. Up to 220AW suction
V12 - up to 60 minutes runtime, hot swappable battery, 350ml capacity & up to 150AW suction. Main feature for this is the auto adjusting suction based on how clear floor is, on/off button and because it’s lighter than v8
V15 - up to 60 minutes runtime, 770ml capacity & up to 230AW suction. Has the same battery as v11 and outsize, and the auto adjusting suction like V12. Also includes anti tangle head best for carpet cleaning without hair wrapping around.

Any model designated total clean will get the anti tangle mini motorised head (hair screw) a fluffy head which is the best option for delicate floors and those with mostly or all hard floors at home. V12 and v15 come with a newer model which is slimmer and has a laser to illuminate dust on the floor, especially around furniture.

Most people that want best value for performance opt for V10 or V11, however V11 and outsize are temporarily discontinued due to parts shortage. Situation should likely improve in H2 ‘22

      Happy to answer any questions

  • Any deals on the V10?

  • My $99 treme ozbarg special has gone kaput and no idea on replacement battery but it did well for the iso times
Is this the lowest v8 has been? Certain sun 400 at bigw or something

    • Looking at history, the lowest would be just $20-30 below this. However if you need all the extra tools from Animal or Absolute, they both have gone down previously a couple times. It's currently $599 from David Jones etc I think.

  • Bought one! Thanks OP! :)

  • tempting, how often do these come up for sale?

  • Can't apply the code. Coming as $499. Am I doing anything wrong

  • Thanks OP! Have been eyeing off getting one for ages, and finally pulled the trigger!
Now what to do with my old Dyson corded one… hmmm

    • Did you use eBay plus. Its coming to me as 499. Thanks

      • Noper - let my eBay plus lapse, and used the code as advertised!

  • Waiting for V10 Animal to get down to $600 again. Not sure if it will ever happen again :(

    • Yeah V10 and V11 very rarely comes to sale, like Apple products. But upon further consideration my small apartment would be fine with a V8.

      • +1

        User name checks out.

    • +1

Unfortunately RRP of all models changed as shipping costs have risen substantially. In 2020 and and earlier when those specials were more common, the global container freight rate index was about $1450USD, now it’s $8152USD.

That special may also have been when V10 animal was discontinued to make way for the v10 animal+ SKU which has unfortunately since been discontinued.

With inflation I doubt it’ll get back to $600 but let’s hope specials get more that way!

-speaking as an individual, not as a representation of Dyson or their views

  • Thank you OP.. old is Gold :-)

  • +2

Looks a good price. Our Dyson DC35 is coming up to 9 years old and still going strong!!! Waiting for it to die and will go for something like V7 or V8.

  • Dyson V8 or Dreame T30?

    • Dyson

  • PS: If you have eBay Plus, use code PLUHNG10 for 10% off - $449.10 Delivered.

    • awesome thanks

  • Thanks Op, ordered V8
