Respawn Ninja RN988 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Outemu Brown $20 (Was $69) + $7.99 Delivery ($0 mVIP/ SYD C&C) @ Mwave

760

A pretty cheap mechanical keyboard. For whatever reason, the Blue clicky switch variant and the Red linear switch variant are $19 more expensive. 12 months 'limited' warranty is provided.

Won't feel the best, but won't be any better than mech boards from Razer, Logitech G, Corsair, etc. If you want a really nice feeling (and looking) mechanical keyboard, build one yourself (or at least get a board that's hotswap-capable). You can easily do so for under $200.

Was going to post this and then I realized I’m such a luddite that I don’t even really know how a mechanical keyboard operates.

    • +4

Will achieve the same job as any keyboard; it functions 100% the same as a $5 membrane keyboard off AliExpress or Amazon. It'll just feel/sound/look better, of course this is subjective though.

  • +4

This is actually pretty good value. It has a pretty decent font, per-key RGB, and it's USB-C.

  • +5

Good deal for people to experience mechanical keyboard.

  • +4

Looks decent for the price. Gotta be better than the Kogan boards that seem popular.

  • +1

Gotta be better than that kebs and mouse crowd advertising a couple of days ago.

  • +2

Looks quite solid from checking reviews plus I’ve been missing brown switches, placed an order. Thanks OP!

    • +1

Outemu switches are pretty scratchy. Will definitely need to be lubed

      • +1

If I'm not mistaken, the switches aren't hotswappable, so you'd need to desolder the switches in order to open them up and lube them properly? Not worth the effort imo, best to save your lube on some other switches lol. I guess if you're even thinking about lubing switches in general you should already have some nice switches on some other boards that you'd rather use the lube on.

        • You can just use a brush and edge the lube down the sides a bit. Better than nothing and would probably be a noticeable difference

          • @Sammyboy: Did try that with some Zorro Blacks in my AK33 a few years back, didn't lube them too well but there was a slight difference in both sound and feel compared to unlubed switches. Yea, better than nothing I suppose lol

  • +1

Thanks for the comments, figured I'd give this a try and see if I like brown mechanical keys.

  • I got a brown switch keyboard, and coming from an old IBM it was decidedly not colicky enough. Need at least a blue switch

    • +3

I also miss my old IBM model m from last century..
I don't think the blue switches are even enough, they have the sound but something about the feel is wrong (typing on a Keychron at the moment).
I have been on the lookout for an old IBM for about a decade now - I was sure I would eventually find one in an acquaintance's garage or on the footpath on hard rubbish day, but no joy so far.
They had big steel plates in the base so you could murder a man if things got too much, a rarely discussed benefit.

      • There are some better clicky switches on the market, Outemu/Cherry Blues aren't the best by any margin. You'd have to pay a bit more though for some good ones like some of the Kailh BOX switches, and be willing to either a) get a hotswap-capable board or b) desolder the switches on your current keyboard and put these in. This may not even be viable, depending on the keyboard you're using.

Nvm, reread your comment and saw that you're using a Keychron. Is your board hotswap-capable by any chance?

        • +2

It is, but it is tkl and I will go for the big as a whale heavy bugger next, ideally with some extra f keys or otherwise over the top format.

The keychron is a nice keyboard, and is good to use, but has allowed me to realize I need the 1980s wood sided station wagon of keyboards!

        • +1

Oh, and I bought one of these too, thanks.
Lots of family have $6 mush keyboards that came from a harvey Norman PC, so it is a nice thing to give people who don't even think about keyboards a little upgrade.

      • +1

Look into Unicomp keyboards, I think they make Model M clones

    • Browse and blues are not comparible. Browns are "tactile", that is, you feel the actuation in your fingers as a bump. Blues are "clicky", that is, your hear the actuation as click sound.
Your old IBM keyboard likely used buckling spring, which tend to be both tactile and clicky at the same time.

My favourite switch is Cherry Clear, they are like brown, but have a stronger spring and more pronounced tactile feedback bump.

      • Yeah I know mine was buckling spring, and I have to say I find it much more satisfying. There is a company making them for about 200 bucks or so, but I have one so I just need to get an adapter.

I actually find the older style dell keyboards to be quite good for tactile feel

  • This looks so similar to filco majetouch convertible

  • +1

thanks. bought one for work.. Got a cr@py Dell keyboard at work. this is an upgrade.

    • Space bar might sound a bit rattly, shouldn't be too much of an issue though. These switches will probably feel better than whatever rubber domes are in your current keyboard at work. Enjoy.

  • Looking to get this for work. Is this USB-C only? My work PC is a crappy 7th Gen Dell i5 and I don't think it has USB-C

Op is mess. Shares the price then says you should built one for $200 with no further info.

    • +6

Only build one and spend $200 if you're really interested in mechanical keyboards. I didn't say you should or have to do it, because paying more than $100 for a keyboard is overkill for some. By no means is this keyboard unusable or bad, it'll definitely be perfectly fine for 99% of the people out there. It's going to feel very similar to those more expensive Razer and Corsair boards, which lots of people like.

      • +2

Custom keyboards are absolutely a thing, and I've seen $600+ builds that nobody batted an eye at…

On this forum, if it isn't your hobby to build your own, a $20 mech keyboard is a great deal, a real upgrade for a lot of users.

I find it a bit like a Seiko 5 mechanical watch - a gateway drug to some new and interesting stuff.

So this keyboard has the 'brown' note. Can't wait to try it out on my neighbours

    • +2

Rumor has it they used it at Engadine McDonald's on the POS system in 1997…

  • +1

I had this. It bricked 3 months in.

  • +1

Thanks OP, purchased one brown and one blue.

  • sold out - missed by a minute max I guess

EDIT: Looks like once you add it to the cart it returns to normal $69 price.

  • OMG, I was doing my final review and about to place my order and its SOLD O UT!!!!!

  • Blue and Red still available

    • yeh not gonna spend $39 on a keyboard just for work when they won't reimburse me

  • Just missed it :(

  • -2

Considered this on the cost but it looked too much like the free black Dell keyboard I stole from work.
Setting up a home office/gaming area and would love a functional mechanical keyboard with numpad and media controls productivity AND gaming? any suggestions?

  • +1

Thanks for the post exactly what I needed. I currently type at 17 wpm, looking forward to this keyboard getting me to 60+wpm and beating my colleagues at work

    • +1

Haha, sounds good. This won't necessarily improve your typing speed, keep that in mind. It's more your technique and the way you type. Do you know how to touch type (not look at the keyboard at all when typing)?

      • +1

Yeah looking forward to it. I don't touch type, I like sticking with my 2 finger technique so it leaves other fingers free for texting, smoking and nose picking. I've always been a multi-tasker.

  • +2

Startrack post was very quick. ordered Tuesday night and came on Thursday afternoon to far north Queensland.
The keyboard is great to type on (using it right now), much better than the Typhoon gaming keyboard from Officeworks i was previously using with blue switches.
Overall very satisfied and will be returning the Typhoon Officeworks keyboard, thanks again OP!

    • +1

Glad to hear it. Enjoy :)

  • Anyone have any idea how to turn off the backlight?
