You also need to create a 'CoPilot' account as well.. :(

NavFree is better and free with voice.

    • +1

Are any of these worth the bother over google maps/nav?

      • +2

Google maps/nav only works when you have cell reception and can download data continually.
        Pre-downloaded maps remove that restriction.

Don't get me wrong, Google Maps is good but it doesn't work everywhere.

        • I agree, but I've found as long as you have some sort of reception most of the time it works fine.

You would seriously need to be out of reception for a decent amount of time for it to be a problem.

If you did lose reception it still gives you an overview of your route and it still tracks you via GPS.

I guess my point is that I've yet to go somewhere in Australia that needed a GPS and didn't have any reception at the same time.

        • +4

@samfisher5986 ..it's easy to go out of reception if you're with Vodafone ..sometimes by the time the map loads i've already passed the turn. :p

        • Unless you're with Telstra, going anywhere regional means you'll lose reception. Drove to Mt Buller last year. Lost reception way before reaching Kinglake.

        • To be fair, Google maps on android caches the maps of the local area you're in so this shouldn't happen too often.

        • … also if you have a device that has android but no data SIM / data plan you won't be able to download data to use GoogleMaps in most cases. just try firing it up when you're out and about and setting a new route, if it can't download data it won't work. there is no good reason for these apps to not have the Australia-wide maps and POIs database builtin, when the size is typically under 0.5Gb.

        • Even if you're with Telstra their reception can be poor in the country. Google maps can cache - http://lifehacker.com/5819742/google-maps-for-android-labs-add-offline-caching-scale-and-measuring-tools#13369610172733&{"type":"iframeUpdated","height":282}

  • How does this compare to RMaps?

    • +1

I dunno about Android, but I used Nokia maps perfectly fine when I went in 2010.

    • +1

I don't know what China but I was in Hong Kong and Taiwan not long ago, never had a problem with my Noka N8 or Navman unit. Even Google maps worked there.

      • at least HK is part of China. one single China, or mainland China and HK.

        • +1

They are governed differently. As an example, an Australian citizen can go to Hong Kong for 30 days or less without a Visa, you need a Visa to go to China for any amount of time.
FM transmitters (play mp3's in the car) are illegal in China but not in Hong Kong.
There are heaps of other examples too.

at least HK is part of China. one single China, or mainland China and HK.

This isn't entirely true. Part if China, yes. One single China, no.
(Not exactly sure what you are trying to say but I hope I understood you.)

        • @zero, certainly they r currently governed differently, but hk is still part of China. It was a colony of uk,but back to CN in 1997. Simple like that.

last time you checked? when and how? Qing Dynasty?

    • +5

And it means what? Bohemian Rhapsody is around 20MB in 320k mp3.

      • Even bigger in size when the drunk guy sings it :)

      Paranoid much?

Odd comment… We don't comment to be insulted, but to give a heads-up.

I just want folks to know they could be up for charges.

        Do you mind…? :-/

Considering that CoPilot is one of the biggest names in GPS software, I very much doubt that they'll hide some backdoor dialer in their software.. Personally I'd rather install a 'free' commercial product than some carbon neutral, tree hugging, hippy, peace loving, usually outdated, buggy but good hearted yet still not quite right open source software.

        • +1

"We don't comment to be insulted"

          It's settled, lVl is a hippy hive-mind.

          …or he is Gollum.

          Either way it's -irritating-.

    • +1

@IVI Do you really think these are valid points to neg on? Did anyone say it will work in china (this site is .com.AU), since when is 20 MB too big and what proof do you have of this program actually making calls?

come on bud, think before you post!

  • -4

Of course, it might be -hard- to make calls (that could cost) on a WiFi-only tablet (or a SIM-less phone) :-)

  • I just tried it. I'm heading to Israel on Monday, thought this might be good to have on the phone as I'm not sure about data on a pre-paid sim. Watch out. It locks you into the first map you select, you need to pay for any other maps. FYI Israel maps are hard to find :) Not in co-pilot or NavFree.

    • -1

Hard to find maps for Israel? Why is that? [Has a car-GPS maker bought the rights to all the maps?]

Have you tried the Open Source mapping project? dunno if they'd be compatible for this app, but you might find an app - or, on Linux, a bigger application.

(Austrian-designed "GPSdrive" (or similar) might be one that runs under Linux & is likely to work with Open Src maps… so - if nothing else turns up - Ubuntu-based notebooks are said to be coming any day now…)

      • No idea - This post reminded me to look into it. Just installed MAPFactor Navigator, and it has an Israel map. It also pulls maps from OpenStreetMap.

        • -2

That's good to know… so, can you "browse" the map, eg from here? Do the maps seem reasonable for trip planning from the home/office?

Or would Google Earth be the way to go for that kind of thing?

  • +10

    Seriously IVI?

Don't fill ozbargain up with your spam.

GPS software needs to make calls and cost you money for the sole purpose of points of interest that have their phone number listed.

Do you seriously expect the GPS software to tell you to write down the phone number on paper, close the GPS and dial it yourself?

  • +1

    It's pretty crap really.

    1. The keyboard input is broken, it keeps repeating the whole word rather that auto completing.

    2. It's also €25 in app purchase for 3D voice navigation.

    3. Requires an account set up Wtf?

  • +1

Used to use this great GPS software on my windows mobile 5, but now use 'Sygic' on android ics. Has very extensive range of maps & multilingual voices too.

    • sygic is great but not free…google map is the best

  • +7

Damn, out of neg vote today just for the love of IVI. Dude! Go somewhere else to fill your garbage.

    • +2

Yeah me too, man. Common thing when dealing with lVl unfortunately.

    • +6

[It causes cancer! It might cost you money! It might kidnap your kids and frame your wife! ]

Just in case anyone here hasn't got the message.

      • +1

        …and frame your wife!

Now you have piqued my interest! :p

    • +7

Now all we need is Jv to start commenting too and we've got a party.. Lol

  • Any of these save maps direct to SD card rather than phone mem. NavFree saves to mem (at least initially) unfortunately.

    • i like it to save to sd card, my phone aint got much memory

I do have to switch off the app using the button in the main menu as pressing home on the phone doesnt switch it off. the gps stays on and chews up the battery otherwise

      good post!
