I'll get this for my missus and her best friend. They enjoy riding together.

If you don't have a spoiler you may as well save $200 and get this
I have one and it works fine.

If I were to spend $250 it would be on a proper towbar mount.

    • Have you tried to carry 3 bikes at 15kg per bike? There is no max weight capacity stated on the one you recommended.

There is no max weight capacity stated on the one you recommended

…you mean, except for the MAX 60KG disclosure on the fifth image and "…the load capacity is up to 60kg…" in the description?

You are right. Did not see that sorry.

@wtfnodeal: All good. I couldn't find my watch this morning. Wife found it within 30 seconds, of course. ;-)

yeah, I've looked into all the cheaper ones, and reviewed all the available options. My car doesn't have a tow bar, and though that would be my preference, I'm not willing to spend money to get a towbar added to the car and then on top of this get the bike rack. Not for my current car anyway.

As for the one you pointed out, it doesn't fit the car, and the truth is, I probably rather spend the extra $200 for peace of mind of a brand and maybe a 'false perception' that there is a slightly lower chance of damaging my car with the Saris. Might not be true, but from the reviews I have read, (and the number of sales of the Saris EX overseas), it seems to be one of the best of the bunch for "boot" carriers.

I also need peace of mind it can carry 3 mountain bikes (which weigh around 15kgs each) without the stress it might fail while driving down a hill.
So taking all this into consideration, i thought this would be worth the additional $$ over an el-cheapo one. (as the potential damage done to the bikes or car would easily outweigh the premium I paid for this particular brand and rack)

I was lucky enough to get it for $80 at the Camberwell Sunday Market a few months ago and it's been great, I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a towbar.

  • Is it really safe for SUV with rear plastic spoiler?
The top strap clips will be pulling down on the spoiler and might crack it

    • That was my concern as well. That's why I ended up waiting for a sale of this particular model.

If you go to the Saris website, you can put in your exact car model (well- the US version). It was all about the risk of damaging the car for me, so together with the reviews of bike carriers for my particular car (forums) , Saris' own website on compatibility and reviews of the product, I eventually chose this particular Saris Bones EX model.

The good news though is - Pushy also have 15% off all the other bike carriers if this one doesn't suit your particular need.

You wont be able to open the boot, but should be possible to mount high with the top support on the roof.
That's how I used to mount mine on our old Magna wagon.
YMMV of course, the wagon "spoiler" didn't rise above the level of the boot

    • The only mount I've seen that will work with plastic spoilers is the Hollywood Over the Top mount.

The top mounting point is extended up to be higher than the spoiler, so the ropes never touch it.

      • It's not about the ropes touching the spoiler.
The 2 hook clips are pulling the plastic spoiler and plastic is not as durable as metal.

Plastic might crack on big jolts.

But again metal might also bent, just saying

        • Just about all boot racks come with glass hatch anchors that you can use. They just jam into the door seal rather than hook to the edge of the spoiler/boot.

The hollywood has those anchors as well as roof rail hooks. If your car has in built roof rails mounts you can hook it to those, or set up a single roof rail and hook it to that.

Has anybody used one of these units on a Honda CRV, if so does it fit securely?

  • Thanks, I have something similar to this and very useful.

One warning, if the bike conceals your number plate I believe you can get fined.

    • Buy an auxiliary plate, they are $32 in QLD, $45 in NSW.

      • +1

Never even knew about this. TIL

    • Cheap to get an additional Bike carrier number plate

  • Good deal OP. Any recommendations for similar 4 bike carriers? Cheers

  • +1

had the old Saris Bones… it didnt fit 3 mountain bikes… 3 road bikes, maybe… just sayin…

    • Agreed, but in my experience same can be said for just about any carrier, even a towbar mounted one.

  • OOS now.

On a separate note, the code does not seem to apply to Thule 598? Is there a terms and conditions page?

    • I just tried it. worked perfectly on the Thule 598. Maybe you entered the code in Gift Card Code box instead of the Promotional Code Box?
