I really hope a decent & affordable colour ereader comes out.

It's not the same, every new phone and tablet I get I set up my reading apps but it's not as comfortable to read from for extended periods like a book.

eBooks exist despite mobile phones because they have a paper-esque display which is softer on the eyes for long reads, unlike staring at an LCD light.

          Hisense A7 CC

          • @dcep: Would you happen to know where you can purchase the A7 (or even the more basic A5)? Been looking on AliExpress but it's much more expensive than retail there.

@DrScavenger: It is not the same…

An eink screen has a refresh rate of 0. There is no flicking once the image loads. It is much easier on the eyes, even if you can't immediately notice it

And yet we use computer screens all day

          • @Mokr: Due of lack of choice, funds and ignorance. 100% prefer 264dpi, 144Hz, calibrated; yet, 99% settle for 96dpi, 60Hz, factory/barely-correct.

        • +1

I get what you mean but when I used a kindle last, I found that screen distortion when one changes the page too uncomfortable, I missed the smooth page flip of the phone and tablets.

    • what about the $99 kindle?

      • That's monochrome, I would settle for it if it had USB-C.

        • +3

The resolution on it is the dealbreaker for me, the Paperwhite looks like real book while the cheap one looks like a screen

          • +1

            @FrugalSplack: yeah definitely can agree - I've a paperwhite and it's awesome

$229 on Good Guys Ebay with code TOPITUP, free C&C or + $5 delivery (free with eBay plus). You’d probably get it faster from Amazon though.

Nice! Although with Amazon, both Cashrewards and Shopback are offering 7% on Amazon devices. Works out to be ~$231. :) Good to have options.

  • Any experience with this reading manga and comic files on this?

Seems the kobo is better for file support, but wanted to see if anybody has first hand experience

    • +1

I have used it to read manga after using Calibre to convert the files to supported format.

It’s a bit slow turning the pages but it’s totally doable.

    • I remember manga being a pain in the ass to get on my kindle. I installed kindlecomicconverter and calibre but had issues with pages being cut off all the time, sizes being messed up & volumes not being organised correctly after conversion etc.

    • Slow. tablets will do a better job.

      • not this new one

  • no 4 gee

    • +7

I’ve owned a kindle without cellular connectivity for 7 or 8 years and haven’t once found myself in a situation where I needed it

      • Yep, worst case tether to your phone. Takes maybe a couple of minutes longer to download a new book.

  • I bought one and enjoy using it…coming from a 2nd generation kindle paperwhite it was a wonderful upgrade!

    • +3

What do you particularly like about the upgrade

      • I too am curious about the upgrade

        • +1

          Larger screen
          Better resolution
          More even lighting
          Yellow tint available
Auto brightness (this is a big one)
          More responsive
Usb c charging (my kindle was one of the last devices I had that still used micro usb)
Water resistance is nice as well

Got the 8gb one for $219 before easter, heaps better than the 10th gen, those saying tablet/phone try reading in the sun, no distractions either.

  • Waiting for Kobo to release a similar product with USB-C

    • I get it, micro usb is archaic but the Kobo Clara HD charges so fast, it hardly bothers me.

    • Kobo Libra 2 has USB-C (was released towards the end of last year).

  • +2

I bought a Kobo Clara HD over the paperwhite as it seems the Amazon devices can’t directly use Overdrive app to download ebooks from public libraries which is the main use in our household. To borrow an ebook from my local library, I’d have to borrow on my pc, convert with calibre, and then sync to the kindle, whereas on my Kobo, it’s ready to go and I can do it directly on my device. Does anyone know if there’s a way to use Overdrive ona Kindle? If there was a way to borrow AUS library books directly onto the Kindle, I’d be buying one too.

    • +2

From what I’ve read online, if you use the Libby app on your phone (from the makers of Overdrive) and have a US address linked to your Amazon account, you can send via Libby a link to your Kindle to borrow an ebook.

    • +3

Why not both? I buy real books but also pick up ebooks when they're free and/or cheap as well. You don't need to restrict yourself to one or the other

  • 32gb stores more books than u could ever read
