  • This seems like a pretty sweet deal unless I’m missing something?

      250 nits

It sends your data to China

        And to winnie the pooh

      • You are targeted

      • The CCP:

Finally gentlemen we know all about ecumgo, despite using a Private browser we know he likes Hentai… we will use that as blackmail! Bwah ha ha ha!

      It has a poor display.

Low brightness and low colour gamut.

  • So is IdeaPad quality a lot worst than Legion?

    • +1

      Yes

  • cmon we need an x13 3050ti under 2.3

Wait if you can. I might have something in May but it’s not locked in.

        • Cool waiting

        • Im in..

        • My laptop died yesterday, so keeping an eye out for a good deal.

    • 3050ti is still behind a 1660 which sucks.

  • +2

Decent laptop let down by the screen! Need at least 300 nits

  • Why there haven't been any deals on laptops with dedicated AMD graphics instead of nvidia?

    • I have been thinking the same. AMD CPU would go better with AMD gpu. Why the need to complicate things by bringing in NVDIA.

    • +1

      No supply.

Its made on TSMC 7nm, same as Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 5000, the CPU and GPU in the PS5 and the Xbox…

Nvidia makes their GPUs on the (inferior) Samsung 8nm FAB

      • Does it mean the price is dearer as well compared to Nvidia's?

        • It means Nvidia makes more money on an equivalent card.

They aren't exactly passing on the savings at the moment…

to be honest I would skip this:

    • poor screen
    • cheap build and components (think trackpad, keyboard)
    • 3060 is weaker than Acer Nitro 5 I posted last year ahem heavily commented on because I bought same thing from Acer outlet (for less)
    • cooling isn't the best, but actually might be fine with TGP this low

I say add a bit more and get a decent machine - with at least a decent panel, or 130w 3060 (or both)

buying a cheaper but seriously limited machine with a lot of cut corners ruins the experience. that can't be fixed for money afterwards

I know a lot of people will say "there's always something better for $X00 more, who cares", but seriously you can buy a really good laptop for $2k and it will work fantastic and will not leave you wanting, and even have a great resale value down the track, or you can cheap out and buy trash which will annoy you to no end, will be hard to get rid of, and will just cripple the ride

..(says someone who has tried all decent options sub $2k and bought a $2.2k laptop and no regrets ever since, well apart from noisy mechanical keyboard and fkin short right shift)

    • Any recommendation for ~2k?

      • +4

there's one I posted, that's the one I have (Aorus 17g), a bit dearer at $2.3k but really good for what I do (300hz panel, low TGP 3070 to keep things snappy and cool on high 1080p framerates, mech keyboard with per key RGB, full metal build etc.)

if you're a Lenovo fan and want higher res screen, there's Legion 5 Pro, with high TGP 3060. wait for a good deal, check ozb history, it goes for around $2k on and off, occasionally 3070 Lenovo options dip within $2.5k reach, too. that's Jarrod's favourite gaming laptop, and for a good reason, however it's not for people who don't like dealing with heat, and Windows scaling.

Omen 16 with 3060 is also not too bad, good build and cooling, but make sure your config has a good screen, also mine was DOA essentially. keyboard is weak, too

skip Dell this gen and last gen. trash

can't say anything about Asus, neither here nor there. their design decisions leave me indifferent. same goes for MSI, somepeople like them but I think they build trash

so if I was on the market right now I'd choose between Aorus and Lenovo L5P

that's my personal unbiased opinion based on trying almost every sensible config in what is now last gen (11th gen Intel, or AMD 5600H 5800H and 3060 / 3070 with a variety of TGP)

    cheapy cheeep screen

  • +2

single ram is also a negative

    • Indeed it is.. thought not so bad on a machine with a GPU.
Ryzen lappys using single chan on integrated GPU are cancer.

  • +2

Be warned, just because a screen is specified as 250 nits doesn't mean it runs by default at 250nits however it has brightness options allowing you to go to 250nits.
This is because OEMS intentionally lower brightness so colour ranges are accurate.
There's a lot of non-standardised testing within the industry and you can always assume the actual colour space will always be less than the reported one on the sheet.
So this is a display panel that likely runs somewhere at 170-210 nits with a colour space maximum of 45% NTSC and will have blown out colours at 250nits.

I personally do not understand the appeal of 120hz screens for gaming on a laptop since it only feels limited to extremely competitive FPS players, in which case they should invest in a computer instead. There are plenty of affordable monitors that can hit 144hz+ with better picture quality and you can get much better framerates on a desktop cpu.
If you're the average consumer like me then you'll probably be spending most of your time watching videos and movies which are intended to be watched (digitally) at 100% sRGB or 99% DCI-P3. It will not be an enjoyable experience and you'll probably end up watching them on your phone instead.

I can see this as a laptop you might want to buy for your children as their primary computer to spend their free time on as a PC is daunting, seemingly expensive and takes up space in the house. Otherwise if you're an adult, you might want to invest in a laptop with a proper screen so you can spend your time enjoying the experience of playing AAA titles wherever you want.

I prefer high refresh rate screens. Even with just browsing and non-gaming tasks, everything just feels so much smoother than 60Hz.

  • Not sure if its relevant to this deal, but just a heads up. My Legion from a previous deal has been sitting in China for a month now, held up due to "security concerns" apparently. DHL won't give me any more info than that and Lenovo says it is probably due to COVID shutdowns over there, but no-one really seems to be following it up and I do wonder if it will sit in a warehouse there for months.

  • I'm looking for a desktop gaming PC with a plain case, with a budget of $1500-$2000.

Any leads, or at least resources I can use for research?

  • Shopback tracked $44.97 cashback only for my purchase.

    • Same;

      The cashback calculation should account for the following;
      $1499 - 10% GST = $1349.10
      14% of $1349.10 = $188.87

I submitted a ticket through the chat bot which went to email.
      They asked me to provide them with the following details;
a PDF copy of order confirmation, which includes order ID, purchase date and time, product information, and a summary of the total price.
