how can a single speed be a great commuter?

    • Great for temporary citizens (ie people who wish experience death by truck).

but you are stuck with one speed, so you either struggle to get up hills if the gearing isn't very low or you don't go very fast if the gearing is low. i couldn't imagine doing any serious riding on a single speed bike. i thought they were mainly for track racing

        • +1

Yeah well it's pretty shit for serious riding. Track racing is a fixed gear, which is what you see all the wanna be hipsters walking round the city with.

SS is just good because it's cheap and you basically never have to maintain it, unfortunately you do struggle with hills, but I actually seem to go faster on an SS because I can't pussy out and change into an easier gear.

Serious riding is the opposite of a great commuter. We are talking about 200 bucks bikes here..

    how much is weight plz.

    • +3

Ahhh, I connoisseur of fine bikes I see, buying bikes by weight? The question is do you want more for you money or less?

    The Dutchie.

'In a world where women have earned equal standing'

If 'Equal standing' = hot woman + low cut loose top + drop bar fixie, I'm all in for the New World Order.

    • My sentiments exactly, after following the link to their site do wanna take a guess at what I clicked on next :)

      • Who doesnt want two brazed gussets around the headtube and double-butted 4130 Chromoly

  • Is there a reverse ?

    • +1

I will need a reverse option to ride in front of a woman riding the Dutchie.

Single-speed is fine for velodromes, or BMX. Fixies are fun.
But you'd be an idiot to think either was a good commuter.
Maybe if you live where there are no hills or wind??

Don't have to maintain gears. Huge +.

Hub gears are the same low-maintenance, be it the old-fashioned 3-speed, or a fancy Rholhoff.

God, I've gotta get a carbon frame.

    • A good commuter has little to do with how fast it is!
I'm not advocating these particular bikes, but for city riding/ short trips single speed is a great commuter. Would you lock your 3k carbon frame bike infront of coles or go to watch a movie in the city with it sitting out front ?

      • but for city riding/ short trips

        Thats not a commuter.

Would you lock your 3k carbon frame bike infront of coles

        Neither is that.

Think "commute" from suburbs to city. Say 5 to 20 km. 2 ways . day after day. Yes, speed matters.

from wiki: "Commuting is regular travel between one's place of residence and place of work or full time study"

        • Last I checked 5 - 20km is a short trip. and around the city is perfect for that style of riding, less hills etc.

Whatever you reckon though mate, go into any bike shop and look at the "Commuter bikes" they will be HEAVY, build for comfort with very little consideration for SPEED, and there will be HEAPS of single speeds PERFECT for 5 to 20 km trips.

I ride 20 km a day to work and I do it on Single and on my road bike. I can assure you, that hills are not much problem on a well geared single speed over a short distance like 20 kms and the time difference isn't massive. We can't all be Cadel Evans.

I wasn't saying a 3K bike is a commuter, I was getting at why someone would want a cheap single speed commuter.

Put your Lyrca back on and head to beach road mate, there is a Peloton leaving soon.

  • Wow how lazy are we getting."Fixies" are the latest fad!
How hard is it to maintain a geared bike?
I have been riding them for years and never had any problems.

Look, we all know the market that buys these bikes the most. The same market that wears chinos with a dorky patterned shirt and a button up jacket of some sort. Then to top it all off some kind of scarf and Rayban wayfarer glasses. Yes, I am talking about a hipster. I guess what I am getting at is fixies have become some what a fashion orientated item. If you are looking for a way to get around your city this is probably not the best idea.

That said, you would look stylish riding one of these down the street with the rest of your hipster gear and there is nothing wrong with that! I don't know the quality of these bikes but assuming it's acceptable quality IMO $199 for one of these is a bargain and I will give this deal a +.

  • Seems like a good deal. I was (no longer, it seems) in the process of replacing a wheelset and tyres for my bike that would cost more than this entire bike. Bargain.

  • Perfect, now all those douchebag hipsters will think I’m cool!

Great for the price, although better suited to the flatter Melbourne.
