Belkin Share N300 Wireless N Router $48 from MSY (64MB, Broadcom SOC and DD-WRT Compatible)

41

I just had one of these from MSY yesterday for $48. It's an in-store price, but no "in-store special" on the receipt so I guess the price applies nationwide. The current price list has it on $59 which is also very nice. Recommending this unit because:

  • The price falls in the sub-50 category and it is a reputable brand, 3 year warranty
  • 64MB memory, 8MB Flash memory which could handle torrent downloading, video streaming and file sharing easily
  • DD-WRT compatible (no special build required, just the latest mega version works. I have tested with the AU model, they are identical to US models, everything works like a charm), may also be compatible with Tomato but I haven't tested
  • Broadcom 4718 SOC, CPU is BCM4716 rev.1 @ 453MHz. At the same price range you most likely just get an Atheros or Ralink solution
  • 1*USB 2.0 port for printer and file sharing

The model number is F7D3302AU and my revision is 1010au. But I think all revisions sold in Australia comes with identical hardware, so all should be fully compatible with DD-WRT.

Personally I find the DD-WRT supported device page to be pretty handy for checking compatibility and comparing key hardware specifications:

I had one of these. It was a sux router. Bought a Billion 7800N and I couldn't be happier. Worth the extra dosh!

Actually, mine was the modem/router, but I think it'll be similar.

    • Which part sux? I just had it for ~24 hours and am pretty happy with the purchase so far.

      • Pretty much what Proculeius said below. It worked fine for a while and then it would keep cutting out. I had to reset it several times a day to get it working again. I contacted Belkin and they sent me a new one with a prepaid envelope to send them the "faulty" one (good customer service for the record!). I suspected that I didn't just get a lemon based on many other people's experiences, so I just sold the replacement one on eBay and bought a Billion 7800N. I can be downloading something all day on the 7800N and it never cuts out. :-)

    • I have the Billion 7800N too, couldn't go with anything else in that price range.

Plus reviews on this are a bit of a hit and miss.

      • Billions don't support DD-WRT which offers far more features, useful ones like client AP, wireless repeater bridge etc

        • its DD-WRT dont support Billions, not the other way around.
          DD-WRT is third party…

        • Wakkawalla, it cuts both ways. Some modem/router manufacturers go out of their way to make a device suited to DD-WRT and the other third-party firmwares. The WRT54GL ("L" for "Linux") is an example of this. It has no extra features over the WRT54G, except that is was intended to have its firmware replaced.

    • After my experience with this belkin router, I'd never buy a belkin product again, utterly useless! Worked for the first 3 days with speed, then just dies off, has to reset it too many times to count. I also have a billion 7800N now, no issues with it.

  • Thanks for the post, useful and very detailed info.
OP please PM me I'm interested in how you set this up.

  • I have had three Belkin routers and one Billion. Had the Belkins between 2005 and 2007. Had the Billion from 2007 to now. Doesn't that say something.

  • Get an ASUS router, supports Tomato and DD-WRT and the hardware is quality.

A Belkin with DD-WRT is still a crippled router, just with a nicer interface.

  • is it 100Mbps Ethernet?

  • Sorry guys, didn't know that the Belkin routers are so disreputable. My previous experience with other Belkin products are good, so I thought this one might be good as well.

Hopefully my router will not start disconnecting soon. :(

    @chyawala : PM sent.

@ aboutconfig: Yes this one is 100Mbps, for another 10~20 bucks you can get a Linksys E2000 which has GB switch. It was my second choice on the list but I decided to go Belkin.

    • I hope it works out for you better than it did for me. :-)

      • Thanks mate, next time I will try to avoid Belkin routers. :-)

Anyway with DD-WRT it only died once in three days.
