Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 4G $0 on Optus 30GB Choice Plus Data Plan $12.50/Month for 12 Months @ Optus

11571

This one started today, but I went into my Optus App to get it and there was a 50% off data sim offer that stacked with the $0 Tablet.

Has to be 30gb data plan or above.

So my deal was

$12.50 x 12 Months
Tab A8 64gb 4G
30 GB Data added to my data pool
$150 total cost.

Spend $998 for two iPad for young kids that will likely not be working 5 years later (drops, etc) or $300 for two tablets with 720GB of annual data and 4 years of software updates that would be cheaper to replace if accidentally broken?

        • My thinking exactly! 👍

      • +3

I think the cost of this is literally only $120 (with cashback) vs ipad 9 celluar equivalent of $700 (not including data plan)

Assuming with your 1/4 ipad resell value that brings the $700 down to $575.

        3 years useful life:
        A8 - $40 per year
        Ipad 9 - $192 per year

so Ipad 9 is almost 5x more expensive.

For people that only use this tab for movie, browsing and youtube this deal is a no brainer IMHO.

      • Not really true, i am still using my Galaxy Tab S2 9.7", use for playing videos, Netflix, online shopping, spand light gaming, still going strong

I am still thinking …hm…do i need anew tablet?

      • After I read your comment, I took out my Samsung GT-P1000T, it still can be turned on after it has been charged for about 10 minutes.

      • my old tab8 lasted at least 8 years of daily use and spent one year botting in a game 24/7 with a fan blowing on it. The only reason why I dont use it anymore is the charge port is failing. If I leave it in long enough it will detect but often takes a week (i dont actually know exactly)

  • Thanks op needed a cheap android device, this will do.

  • i'm so confused with the min total cost
$513.8 when you selects 12 months

Also, do you need to be connected for the 13th month, pay extra $25????

Is it easy to schedule the disconnection at the final 12th month?

    • Discount after the last (12th) monthly invoice is issued. Normally about on the 11th month of service. This way you will get the last device credit of $44.04.

Since cancellation has no penalties on the sim month to month plan.

You can recheck the cancellation cost on the Optus app prior to canceling when it is closer to the 12month of your plan.

  • My partner was also cancelled and received following email. This is after my partner uploaded ID copy and selfie. Following upload, chat representative confirmed that the order has been approved and confirmation will be received shortly
This is extremely misleading and dodgy!

"Thanks for your recent order. We’ve taken a close look at the details you’ve provided and unfortunately, we’re unable to approve and process your order.

The information you submitted within your order doesn’t meet our current credit and sales criteria for our Telesales and Webchat messaging contact centres. At this time, we are unable to provide an alternative offer.

    • +6

don't you think it would be prudent to wait until you receive your tablet first?

      • I agree, I bought two cases but cancelled them until Optus honor the deal!!!!

    • FWIW and probably a little late for you - I have bought those cases for the kids tabs before and they are great but the prop stand is average and it would overbalance if standing on the table and the kids wanted to press the screen. I bought these which are slightly cheaper and little fold out arms work better to prop it. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/353936786526?hash=item526846c45e…

      • I've read reviews that the arms break off those?

        • +2

My 5yo hasn't killed it yet.
But since you asked - I went and had a look again and you would have to be reefing/bending/pulling it very hard for it to break off. Its got a firm plastic or metal vertical rod that the little leg pivots out on and the foam stuff is the chunky, not soft stuff (I dont know the technical term!) so it's not coming off easily.

          • @ironik: My 3 year old son says "challenge accepted". Pulls on and bites everything…has broken multiple things we didn't think possible 😡. He must have been a dog in a past life…😂

            • +2

@John Kimble: Haha yeah I think twice on things with my 2 boys and how rough they can be but we've had this case on an A7 about 8 months and no issues.
Like if he really wanted to chew it off he might succeed eventually but it's not just snapping off from bending it out or flexing it the wrong way.

Hi all. Placed order. Got an order number but no confirmation so I called Optus. They said order was ‘pending’ as you can only have one offer either tablet for $0 OR 50% monthly plan.

So just a heads up that this deal is invalid.

    • +1

sounds logical, but worth the try anyways. i can't see how they are making money otherwise

    • +1

I have an order number and confirmation. I claimed both.

      • but whether we all receive our orders remains to be seen

        • Yep I mentioned this earlier on - I have my doubts but worth trying.

I got this, but I hope it helps someone

I would wait until you get the tablet before ordering accessories

      • +1

Ordered and confirmed with optus chat

Like i said, I would wait until you get the tablet before ordering accessories.

  • I'm trying to sign up using cashrewards.. How do I do that on a mobile phone? I don't have access to a computer. When I go in it tells me it's $25/month, not $12.50..so I wondered how I could change the cashrewards link to reflect the 50% discount to track. Please help.

    • Click through from cash rewards then paste the link from the pinned post.

    • +1

I just followed the link from CR, then pasted the link for this deal into my browser (Chrome on Android), and it tracked at $30.

      • +1

May I ask how long it took for the track to show up in CR?

I got that under clicked history since 10am, 1.5hrs on, it hasn't tracked yet.

        • I got tracked instantly

          • @jwl81124: Thanks for your reply. Was that on desktop or app?

I ordered mine on desktop. Always a worry about tracking, until it tracks …sigh…

            • @ja912son: on desktop, made purchase at 2am today early morning

              • @jwl81124: Thanks. I realised what happened to mine. Firefox logged me into my existing optus account. It doesn't count as new sign-ups for cashback…

                Silly me…

                • @ja912son: I don't think that will affect, I have log in my old account with Optus as well, and I have current prepaid mobile(inactive) service with optus as well. talk to the live chat got confirm everything as this post deal, nothing to worry.

one thing need to update, tab is locked into Optus need to call back to unlock it without unlock fee.

      • But when you copy and paste this link, it no longer uses the cash rewards affiliate link does it? You can't use the cashrewards app to do it, correct?
Edit: got it working. Thanks for everybody's help! :-)

i just noticed on my invoice "Device Credits
You are eligible for a device discount as a $14.68 per month credit for up to 36 months on service number 0xxx. To receive this device credit you
must maintain an active mobile service on an eligible plan with Optus for the 36 months. If you terminate, port out or change to an ineligible rate plan
any remaining device credits will be forfeited and you will need to pay out in full any remaining device charges." is it becuase i only have prepaid service on optus or did i stuff up the order? but on wifes order it says 12mths for device but she already had 1 service on a plan. am i best to get on chat to fix it or just cancel and reorder it?

    • +7

you didn't select 12 months term for the tablet

    • Cancel and reorder
Or go on a chat and have them cancel and reorder for you….

      • +1

is there a cooling off period? as previously mentioned, see if you can cancel without cost, otherwise you are going to be paying more since the data plan discount expires after 12 months

    • Out of stock. Can’t reorder. Go to chat to see if they can change from 36month device payment plan to 12m device payment plan.

  • +6
    • Ordered two, hopefully they send :)

  • Seems discount plans aren't available if you enter Optus site via cash rewards?

    • Once in, use this url. optus.com.au/moa-mbb-offer

  • I got a temporary order number starting with T, not a confirmation number starting with A. Wonder why that happened.

    • Same issue with me,I believe it could be due to our identification didt get validated.

    • +2

That's interesting…. My order number ends in an A.

    • +1

I called up and they pushed it through, now have a trackable order number ending with an A which is what you want. Might be because I was a distant ex customer with different address details now they wanted to confirm. They said my credit was approved over the phone.
Pretty easy to get them to push it through but initially he didn't have the device discount loaded so I had to remind him so that the price became $12.5 a month.

  • Does this deal come under postpaid or prepaid?

    • Postpaid

      • Cashback is only for new signups for postpaid customer on CR

  • Wow this has been reviewed more than 12k times already, wonder if they have enough stock.

  • How long does cash rewards take to track… Mines showing under click history

    Thanks!

    • Did you have an existing account?

      • Cash rewards or Optus?

        Existing CR account.

I had an old Optus account which I logged into but no active subscriptions.

        • Cashback is only for new signups for postpaid customer on CR.

          • @Iluvfreebies: New sign ups to Optus?

Oh well if it doesn't track it's still a great deal… Would have bought these tabs for $150 anyway!

          • @Iluvfreebies: So will any cashback providers work for this deal??

            • @Uncle Roger: I am not sure. I tried CR and did not work. I guess try shopback.
edit: just check SB the same rule applies.

        • +1

Same here. Old Optus account without any subscription. Still got $30 CR tracked immediately. Please contact CR and check what happened.

          • @io: Damn I figured out I must have clicked on prepaid

            • @beebul: How? Is it from click history? Anyway no harm checking with them. Optus is Optus, they may add to your cr account manually.

              • @io: I mean from CR there are two Optus choices… Pre and post I must have clicked on the wrong one?

                • @beebul: This will be very confusing for CR customer. Explain this to them and hope they allow it. Wish you all the best.

                  • +1

                    @io: Confusing for me! 😅

                  • +2

@io: You can't actually raise a support claim until the 'Send a claim' button appears which takes 7 days…we will have to wait…

  • +2

Can you sign in to Optus Sport once your order has been confirmed or do you have to wait till you receive the tablet and sim?

    • on the order preview page before payment is the easiest option but guess worth trying after the order is confirmed by contacting them?

      • +1

So can you sign up for Optus Sport and login straight away or go via chat?

        • not in my case as service is still pending. No Optus Sport available for me at the moment. But I can confirm as long as you've ticked it it is displayed on the contract.

    • After made ordered, i tried to sign in optus sport and I can view live premier league without any issues. So I guess it works without waiting for tablet and sim

  • is it possible to modify order or best cancel and reorder? how do i cancel other then doing a chat?

    • +1

I've checked. You need to call into the support line on Tuesday. They won't do it today.

      • +1

i did online chat just now . gave her my order and account no. rep said no charge after 12mths hopefully she modified order and i did a screen print just incase as i dont trust them. how do you email a copy of the transcript to myself as a back up record?

  • Was waiting for too long. OOS :-(

  • It is now out-of-stock

  • +1

Out of Stock. So much for the deal ending in late May!!

I wonder how many units were ordered in the past 24 hours? Anyone want to take a guess? Based on the clicks and the up votes (some people buying two) I reckon it would be around 1000.

    • +1

I am surprised that this even lasted overnight.

      1000?

      More like 15,000

      • I don't think it is that many, but concede that my guess could be conservative.

    • +1

      It got ozbargained!

It's not like shopback 1x $4 for $100 gift card which lasted about -3 seconds

    • I clicked that link 20 times before I ordered. Sent to friends who checked but didn’t. I would say some 2500 to 4000. OP may know.

      • There are people here who bought 3-4 of these. Also there are people outside of Ozbargain community who might have jump on this deal.

  • Out of stock…

    • Still says in stock for me?

  • Can they cancel the contract saying its out of stock or dont have enough stock?

    • Yes

    • +7

What if I tell them that I am out of stock of money after ordering this? If they don’t excuse me then don’t excuse them. Tell them to send the next best tablet on their stock.

      • +1

        😂

      • -1

        You can always try
        then report here

  • +2

Oh no! I think I just bought one… Didn't need one and was on the fence about it all morning…

I saw the deal marked out of stock, but had 1 in the cart ready to go… Decide to let fate decide and the order went through ha ha

  • +3

Bit sus that the 64gb and 128gb happened to go OOS at the same time… Makes me wonder if it was all a big stuff up.

    Time will tell I guess!

    • +4

What are the odds someone at Optus realised they f**ked up after getting 15,000 orders overnight and removed the tablet until they fix being able to stack the $0 tablet & 50% off plan promotions at the same time?

Pretty high I reckon, wonder how many of the orders will be actually fulfilled.

      • +2

        Yep I'm skeptical

      • I reckon they will honour the monthly credit but not the half price plan.

I'll take full price plan if they offer me stock :)

        • +1

I doubt they'll do that, as the half price plans are a legit offer, it's the device discount that's in doubt…
