Similar deal to TightArse's post last week, now with an even lower price ($44.72 cheaper)

The basic specs are

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5625U CPU
  • 14" FHD IPS (1920 x 1080) 300nits
  • 256GB SSD M.2 PCIe
  • 8GB DDR4 SODIMM 3200MHz
  • Windows 11 Home 64, Backlit Keyboard
  • 324mm x 220.7mm x 17.9mm (1.64kg)

RAM upgrade is considerably expensive — the laptop however has 1 spare DIMM slot so anyone with a screwdriver can upgrade the RAM themselves with ease. You need only pay $44.90 for a 8GB stick of 3200mhz SODIMM

If you're after a 15 inch laptop, I also recommend taking a look at the Intel NUC M15 that I previously posted. It is $1,249 + $5,99 Shipping and it features a 460 nit touch display, massive 73 watt-hour battery, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and quad-core Tiger Lake CPU with two Thunderbolt Gen4 ports. Comes with the excellent Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse.

Update

Price dropped, was $1,043.28 now $1,101.24

    Lol

    There will be a lot of upset sheep

    So max of 16GB , 2x8s? Or go 8+16 and no dual channel and hence performance hit?

    265gb drive in 2022 is questionable and really need that 512gb minimum

    • You can install 16GB DIMM stick and possibly still enjoy dual channel, but it won't optimal.

      However, for most users, 8GB + 8GB for a total of 16GB is already more than enough, unless you're using your laptop for heavier tasks like content creation (video editing, making music etc) you don't need to overspend on memory upgrades. This laptop isn't suitable for content creation because the display is kinda just mediocre in terms of colour accuracy.

    For those not already familiar, these Thinkpads have best in class keyboards and a chassis with fairly sturdy build quality. With the Thinkpad name you also get business class support: there's a separate phone line for Thinkpad customers.

    But do bear in mind that this unit only has a 45wh battery. This is expected for an entry level product. The NUC M15 also has a display with better sRGB coverage for those wondering.

    • I thought ThinkPad's where overpriced for the specs without a GPU, up until I got one. The build quality, display, keyboard & speakers are significantly better than other laptops.

    Later down the line, how would I find replacement batteries?
    I couldn't find any on the website. But I might not be looking in the right place.

    Here are the current prices for the E14 Gen 3 on the Lenovo EDU (Parents) Store, for those people with a lower budget or who are willing to trade off an earlier gen for more muscle.

    * Windows 11 Home 64, Backlit Keyboard

    Add around $85 for another 8GB of RAM
    Add (also) around $72 for 512GB SSD variant with fingerprint reader

    Price: $1016
    * AMD Ryzen 7 5700U CPU
    * 14" FHD IPS (1920 x 1080) 300nits

    Some other minor differences (level of support, Bluetooth rating) and customisation is possible. This is just a guide.

    • What's the difference between Gen3 & Gen4? They appear to have the same gen of AMD APU.

      • +2

        Chassis-wise they're the same. Gen4 is using AMD's mid-cycle refresh, so not terribly better performance but might be noticeable if you're really pushing it.

        • The difference in performance will be miniscule - clock speeds are slightly higher on the mid-gen version but otherwise they're practically identical. I would pick the Gen 3 here.

  • Does it matter if you use different brand memory?

    • +1

      Not if the specs match. There's some who worry about sub timings being different which aren't published (i.e. not the standard ones you see on the label - CAS, RAS, tRCD, tRP, tRAS).

      When you get the laptop run CPU-id or HW-info and look at what the ram timings and the manufacturer of the modules are (usually either Hynix, Micron or Samsung).

      If you match the manufacturer and timings you should be fine - Kingston/Corsair/Crucial brand memory doesn't matter if it has the same timings and the modules are the same manufacturer. If you can't match the modules at least match the timings

      You can also put in better ram (i.e. faster - higher mhz and lower timings) and the motherboard will run it at the slower speed of the existing ram just fine

      The only thing you must avoid is putting in slower ram than what you have from the factory (lower mhz and/or higher timings) - the laptop may attempt to run it at a faster speed and the ram will be unstable (windows will have memory errors, software crashes etc)

  • Cheaper even if you deduct the cash rewards offer?

    • The previous deal was $1088. I'll be generous and assume that Cashrewards is kind enough to give you cashback even on the 10%GST component of the sale price, so $1088 - 3% percent cashback would result $1055.36.

      This deal is $1,043.28

    Less 10% GST Refund as I'm travelling overseas late May.

    .

    • GST refund ("Tourist Refund Scheme") rules have recently changed.

      • What changed mate?

        And cashrewards tracked so another savings of $49.

        • I'd encourage you to read up on it. I don't want to be responsible for giving advice.

          Basically, when returning to Australia, you are "required" to declare any goods on which you have obtained a TRS refund, and these become subject to GST. So it's basically now designed as a benefit for foreigners returning home with goods bought here.

  • How we thinking AMD against 12th gen? I'd like to pull the trigger on an X1 carbon 1260P but its 2.5k on education :(

    • +1

      Intel is decent now, so I would rather have the thunderbolt port.

      The only reason to pick AMD before was because it had significantly better battery life and performance, especially compared to the quad core "i7" CPUs

  • will this stack with cash back?

  • Revised price. Now $1,101.24

    • Thanks, updated
