    What is a summer tire?

    • +1

      Taken from www.tirerack.com

Not to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, in snow or on ice, or at high speeds in deep standing water, these specially tuned tires combine big-block tread designs with aggressive tread compounds and reinforced internal constructions to emphasize dry road response, traction, handling and high speed capabilities for serious driving enthusiasts.

    • +1

Winter tyre = snow, icy conditions (mostly N Hemisphere). Summer is a normal tyre.

  • Still figuring out to replace my Yoko's with the RE's.. This could come in handy..

Can vouch for the Potenza RE002, they're awesome tyres - especially if you've got an AWD car. Great traction, grip, steering and consistent feel on both wet & dry roads, very little road noise.

Have them on my Suuby and they're well worth the money! Had the P Zero Nero ones prior but they were too soft.

This is probably a great deal, now I don't have to just buy 3 tyres.

But jokes aside, I called Bridgestone about 2 months ago and asked for the best deal on S001 215/45/18 and they said if I buy 4 and had NRMA membership they can do about 455 each, I was hesistant to call any other Bridgestone as I asked the price at Costco a day prior and they told me its 365 fixed price, which includes Nitrogen filling and refilling.

I understand if you do the maths this is definately a deal, but just sharing my experience.

Also if anyone can recommend anything/anywhere cheap for a premium 215/45/18 happy to hear… =]

    • +1

Don't suppose you have a Subaru Liberty by any chance?.. :)

I spent a few months tracking down decent tyres for this size. Unfortunately it's a very odd/rare combination. The most common 215/45s are generally 17".

Tried importing some Yokohamas from the states, but apparently Yokohama now prevent exports of their tyres…

I bit the bullet and picked up some Yokohama Advan Sport V103s for $385ea. Best handling tyre for dry & wet conditions that I've found to date.

I did find that you can apparently change the size of the tyres in order to find a more common size tyre (and hence a cheaper price), so I think (don't quote me on this) a 225/45/18 or a 225/40/18 would be legal (At least in SA anyhow..). That of course means you have to buy 5 new tyres (4 plus spare!) which negates any savings of the cheaper tyre in year 1. Following years give you a saving though, provided you still have the car of course…

So frustrating! Good deal though :)

      • Thank for the reply zacros,
        I have a Mazda6MPS currently running RE050A but pretty dead…

What you say is true though, i ran RE001 on my old car 205/50/16 when i was meant to be running 195/50/16.

Going to 225/45/18 is okay I guess in RE002 thats $400 (silverwater NSW)
OR theres the proper 215/45/18 S001 $450 (silverwater NSW)

Im sure its capable as ive read many people have done it, but running a smaller profile, will reduce the diameter of your wheel which will throw your speedo of, not significantly bad as it will read a faster speed so you wont get done, but still not great. But 40 is significantly bumpier also.

I dont know about that spare tire rule though because my car has one of those ugly 80KM/H yellow spares.

  • I am looking at replacing 4 tyres for my accord euro 205/55R16, any suggestion for something decent and not costing too much? Was looking at bob jane all rounder z7 for about $145 each (I need 4) so if the bridge stone r002 is about $200 fitted then I might go with the bridge stone as buying with the promotion it will cost $600 for the 4 tyres

    • +3

The bob Jane all Rounders are all round crap. For that money get the Yokohama Cdrive or Toyo teo plus. Both are a million times better than bj crap and have legendary reputations.

Edit: tyrepower quoted me $144 and $149 fit cdrive and toyo respectively.

    • Don't cut cost on tyres. You will be able to tell the difference if you have to stop suddenly on a wet road.
Got potenza's RE002 a short while ago. Due to pricing error when they quoted me I got them for $165 each (215 16), plus there was a deal for a $100 Westfield voucher (they got me $100 from the till instead, was easier for them that way), plus a $50 westfield voucher from Bridgestone themselves. I was quite happy :)
This was Bob Jane. I must say, a "purpose" tyre place like Bob Jane has much better equipment and expertise when it comes to wheel alignments.

      • +1

My experience with Bob Jane is they have very limited experience…

But spending more on tyres doesn't gaurantee you'll stop quicker in the wet, that comes down to the compound used and tread pattern. You'll find whilst the Adrenalins are exceptional in the dry, their aggressive shoulder pattern isn't exactly the best for the wet. Sure they still handle quite well, but there are better wet weather tyres.

Also keep in mind being a sports tyre they aren't as quiet or long wearing as touring oriented tyres….

        • Agreed!

Yokohama C-Drive have the best Wet grip of almost any other tyre, read up on them…they're the stuff of legends.

And for ~$140/corner you cant go wrong

      • I agree that you should spend money on decent tyres. It doesn't necessarily mean the most expensive brand you can find but I would stay away from the budget tyres like the all rounders.

      • Worst wheel alignment I ever got was at Bon Jane's - Steering wheel was crooked afterwards and pulled slightly to left. Also broke the cap on my alloys fitting the tires - then denied it then admitted it - but said it was brittle so didn't replace it.In Perth best wheel alignment I had is Wilkinsons in Bayswater.

    • you can pick up a set of Continental Sport Contact 2 with 91V from Tempe tyre in Syd around $550 ~ (depending on your bargaining skils)
btw .. you can qoute their price from Ebay (seriously!)

  • bugger… only my front tyre sizes are eligible but not the rears (fronts are 245/35/20 and rears are 285/30/20).

    • Does Bridgestone even make 285's in a 30/20 profile? They seem to have every other tyre that I looked for included, including the 305's in both 19's and 20's.

I'm just not sure if I am going to stick with the potezna's or give the Michellin PSS a go.

    • wow - your fronts are wider than most rears. what are you driving?

  • I use RE031, 235/55/18 on my AWD.
handling is excellent and VERY quiet running.
Expensive beasts ($480 each) BUT I did get 75,000 km out of the last set.

Word of advice to anyone looking to purchase tyres from Bridgestone.

I just called 3 different Bridgestone Stores (2 x Bridestone Select and 1 x Bridgestone Service Centre) and was quoted different prices.

I was after 4 x RE002 in 225/50/16 and was quoted $177ea & $180ea by the Bridgestone Select stores, and $220ea by the Bridgestone Service Centre. Might not be the case for all areas, but it'll pay to shop around at different stores.

  • Would any of these tyres be suitable for Hobart conditions on a Passat wagon?

  • AdrenAlin re001 FTW ! So much quieter than what Mazda put on at factory.

  • Great deal - thank you OP, after RE002 for 215/45/17 and just got quoted $675 for 4 fitted, great price.

Will call around based on what "datty" said above - thank you.

  • What if you've got a motorbike?

    • two spares, or two serious inner tubes.

    • Potenzas are car tyres not bike tyres….

Battlax's are their motorcycle tyre range..

  • +1

I need two new front tyres, either 165/70/10 or 145/80/10..any suggestions?

    • Mini?

      • Yer, 1967. I don't actually know why but the front tyres are 165/70/10 and the rear 145/80/10.

  • My car takes 225/40/18's… I've been using Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymms and LOVE the wet (and dry of course) weather grip I get. Does anyone know if the RE002's will be on par?

    • Google it and you might find some comparissons. I suspect the RE002s would be better in dry but fair worse in the wet. Goodyears from what I've read in the past tend to be a pretty good wet weather tyre…

    • The newer Eagle F1s would be better. They're bloody expensive though - I priced them up in 235/40/18 and they were just too dear for me (I think around $400 ea for the Asymms).

The RE002s would be better value, considering this deal. I haven't looked at the RE002s, but the RE001s were around $330 ea in 235/40/18 a couple of years back.

For what it's worth, I ended up with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3s for $300 ea. Very happy with them, but if this deal was around at the time, I would have gone the RE002s instead.

  • I wonder if you can buy now and get fitted in like…3 to 6 months. It would be good to get more mileage out of what's already on the car.

  • so is this at any tyre retailer? ie not just bob jane but beaurepaires etc…

  • 2 months ago in Sydney, Granville, from Eagle Tyres, bought Yokohama S Drives for 205/45/R17 fitted and balanced at $195 each, loving them :)

Had Bridgestone Potenzas on my SP23 originally, very good tyres, but cheapest I could find them were $260 at Costco :(

  • Does anyone know what tyres do I need for Ford falcon and how much do they cost.
    Thanks in advance.

      Ci

  • After getting quotes of between $450 - 500 each for 245/45/18 Bridgestones I have just ordered 4x Kumho KU19s from Tempe Tyres eBay store for $660 total delivered to Perth.
I need quiet running more than performance grip.

    • Who told you the Kumho KU19's were quiet, I had them on my Corolla and a Yaris, farrr from quiet, budget tyres yes, quiet = no.

    • A friend and I got a set of Kumhos for the first time last year. KU 23 for me and KU 19 for him. Tyres were both dissappointing, especially so in the wet. Needless to say we're going back to Bridgestones/Yoko/Michelin nxt set of tyres.

      • I had Yokohamas on my Lancer when I bought it new, they were absolute shit. Kumho KU21 and KU31s were both loads better for grip and also noise levels and given they were $100 corner cheaper than Bridgestone Potenzas (17" size) I could accept that little bit less grip for a significant saving.

KU19s and 23s are also the more el-cheapo sports tyres from Kumho so hardly a fair comparisson. Go KU31 if you want grip or KU21 if you want a quiet and longer wearing tyre and you'll find either way these are a great bang for your buck tyre!

  • I'm after RE002's in size 205/45/16, for far the price quotes range from $255 to $287 per tyre. Seems kind of steep. Can they be bought cheaper?

    • That's pretty steep, Bob Jane are $219/tyre for 235/45R17s at the moment. Have you tried to see what their price is for the 16s you're after?

  • Got quoted $419 per RE002 225/40R18s in Adelaide.

Can anyone suggest outlets to try for a better price?

  • Called around west melbourne area cheapest quote was from Bridgestone st albans for 205/50/R17 RE002s for my mazda 3 with RACV discount at $279 per corner. The guy also suggested go to a more common profile of 215/45/R17 at the price of $214. What do you guys think? Should I change the profile which pretty much saves me close to a total of $200 for all four

  • No funny biz at Bob Jane Wollongong, 235/45R17 RE002s are advertized at $219/ea and they aren't charging fitting or balancing on the 4th!
