  • Good timing! Sydney to Wollongong ride is coming up - thanks for the reminder I need to get myself and partner gear. Anything you recommend for 80km ride for total newbies?

      A comfy pair of bibs

      Two bottles

Puncture repair supplies - with Co2 (+ practice changing a tube before)

      Sunnies

      Gloves (fingerless)

      Bum cream.

+1 to practicing changing a tube. Just do it in front of the TV if you're not familiar with the process.

I would also suggest making sure you pack something to eat, like a muesli bar or something, particularly if it's your first ride of that kind of length.
Stay away from Gels unless you're going to train with them. I'd avoid introducing on race day anything you haven't eaten before… nothing worse than having a mad dash to the loo only to get stuck trying to get your bib-knicks off

        • +1 to the gels. Train with them first. I only use gels when I am in the second half / last third of a ride… Just in case. They can play havoc with your tummy.

      • Not bringing bum cream is a glaring omission novice distance riders make. I recommend Sudocream.
Also, carry a pocket sized rain jacket.

        • Swap the sudocream for Assos saddle cream and you're winning.

This, but swap the CO2 for a small pump. The topeak race rocket is a great small pump that fits in a jersey pocket easily.

The gong ride just got postponed to November.. but good deal nonetheless

      • Whaat? I just received the start package today. I had no idea it got postponed.
        Thank god for oznews.

    • Food that is easy to eat i.e. something that isn't dry and requires a lot of chewing.

I personally like gels as they are pretty easy to carry in the back pocket, and very easy to swallow with no chewing involved where you would need to break your breathing rhythm. You can even squeeze a mouthful and roll the packet up for later if you don't feel like having the whole packet in one go.

Of course, don't forget a helmet. You won't be allowed to participate otherwise. I witnessed someone forgetting theirs during the Around the Bay event back in 2019 (they were running late and forgot).
