  • looks like chopping block

I reckon the red oak might be alright for a chopping board but it is porous… Probably would avoid merbau because of the tannins that leach out.

    Axe throwing target block!!

    • Oh yeah that's a perfect use for it!

Anyone got a hack for a lazy Susan?

    • +1

You can purchase lazy Susan hardware kits, comes with the bearing plate etc. Pretty sure Bunnings sells them so you could kill two birds with one stone.

      • +2

I think you mean kill two birds with one table top.

    • Can pick up bamboo lazy susan for $10 from target

    • Is it a hack to just screw an appropriately sized bearing to the bottom ? Or is the hack knowing where to get a bearing that size?

      • Bunnings has lazy Susan bearings for about $7, but I don't remember what size they say they support

    • Poke her with a pin

    • ikea sells them :)

    William Wallace costume!

I used something similar, made some arrows out of straws and paper so they looked like they were stuck into the shield then added a wrist mounted carrying strap

  • +1

Hmmm…Mrs C has been at me to fashion something to use as a small table on the back deck. With some decent weather shielding these would be ideal for the job. Thanks OP.

    • +3

Mad as. The Merbau ones will definitely be good for outdoors, I grabbed them for that reason. Just give them a wash away from concrete a few times to get as much of the tannins out before putting an outdoor finish on them.

  • -1

Being laminated, I assume not too good left outside?

    • +3

All wood moves, it's kiln dried so should be pretty stable and as long as it's sealed and not being left in the elements it should hold up pretty well. But for $5 I don't think it's a huge risk of you get glue creep. You can always do your best to get a piece that is quartersawn to avoid any serious movement too.

    • +19

Sorry if you already know this but it sounds like you are taking the meaning of "laminated" to mean that it has a layer of "Laminate"/"Formica"/melamine on top of some type of substrate (such as particleboard, or MDF).

In the case of this tabletop, I think the "laminate" is referring to the fact that this is not one solid/continuous piece of wood from which the circle has been cut out of, but rather several boards have been laminated/glued together to form a wide piece from which circle has been cut.

With reference to the suitability for an outdoor application, then it will depend both on the qualities of the wood (and merbau is a good wood for outdoors), the final finish (to be able to seal or protect the wood), and also the glue used to laminate.

      • +2

Oh great pick up I didn't even think about laminate in terms of melamine etc. But yep what this guy said is a good explanation.

      • +2

Just noticed the product description says that the glue they used to laminate is "weather-resistant, class A-Bond glue", so you are probably good to go in that it won't fall apart where each narrow board has been joined to each other.

Couple of handles and you’ve got yourself a cheese board!

    • +5

Sounds like you've got a handle on this one already.

    • Which one is best for serving pizzas on?!

    • A few stores I went to had some built to show that as a project. But yeah clearly they weren't moving many at the original price!

  • Can you use either Merbau FJ Laminated or Red Oak FJ Laminated as chopping board?

    • Anything's a chopping board if you're brave enough

    • See first comment

      • is tannins poisonous or harmful?

        • +1

Nah not really but it stains everything if it's fresh still. I've made cheese boards from 20 year old merbau before and it came up great and I'm still living, it's just that when it's fresh it still has high tannin content so it ends up leaching out which this stuff most certainly will do.

          • @FrankAbagnaleJr: Better stick to bamboo or timber chopping board for $10 from K-Mart then. They seem to use Acacia wood for these applications!

        • +1

I wouldn’t do it due to the tannins possibly leaching out and staining your bench top. I don’t know whether it would be food safe. Let us know how you go.

          • @thriftshop: Thanks will buy timber cutting board from Big W, K Mart for around $10, not worth the risk..

    • The grain structure and all the glue through them isn’t ideal as a chopping board - but a food grade mineral oil wipe down and they’d do the job well enough. Ideal for a charcuterie board to guess.

  • -2

    what is the normal price?

  • +2

You are a champion. I just got the Mrs to load up on there for a bunch of little projects and to have fun with. That is some real cheap wood there!!!

    • No worries! I have plans to rip a bunch of the red oak up and resaw it for box lid inserts etc. My mate also worked out the merbau is $382 a cube which is cheaper than pine!

      • +2

Yeah good to practice my routing skills. Make some lazy susans, maybe practice my welding skills and make some coffee tables. :) Lucky for me my shed should he ready in a couple of weeks

      • +2

        Mate wrong

        π × .2m2 × .026
        = 0.00104π
        = 0.0032672563597334 m3

        1/0.0032672563597334 m3

        = 306.067198254

        = $5 x 306.067198254

        = $1,530.33599127

And given it is circular and mostly useless compared to full lengths

        • Okay sorry sir but yes stools and tables are useless.

Great find OP, picked up some on the way home from Springvale.

Got two, high quality timber, very nice.
for my subwoofer and future dual subwoofer, I will install spikes on it.
    Thank you op.

I saw more than 30 at Greenacre.

    • +3

I read "subwoofer" then "Greenacre" and giggled to myself.

These great neverflats get fantastic fuel economy but provide precious little grip in wet weather…

  • +2

Great, now I can make that chariot for the kids.

  • +3

    Wheels for a Flintstones car

    • I thought they were more a rock steamroller than wooden wheels

… yes I unashamedly Googled it up to remind myself what it looked like lol

  • Just bought four since I was in the neighbourhood.

And next I shall give a large bag of sweets to whomever can suggest the best usage for them…

  • Stool repairs…

(Get you minds out of the gutter!)

    • +1

If I had a dollar for every time I'd been slapped after asking some young lady at a bar if I could push her stool in…

    • The best thing about a three legged stool is that it will never wobble.

  • Bunnings maroochydore has heaps, even though the website said sold out

  • +3

Could make a clock out of them

  • Now I can make so many shields and get the shield maidens to protect me when I holler "shield wall!"

  • Good as a lid for my outdoor squat toilet

  • Can it be used as pizza rolling board?

    • you mean to serve pizza on it? I reckon yes, just need to seal it with oil.

      • Ta. I was looking to use it for rolling the pizza base.

  • I bought the red oak one, looks very good, I sprayed it with cooking oil and wiped it dry, looks shiny now. I reckon can be used as pizza serving or cutting board. The Merbau was very solid & more scratch resistance, but too heavy to use as board.
Anyone know how the red oak compare to okoume? may be I buy some more.

    • Okoume is a very soft timber. Red oak would be more hard wearing.

  • any recommendations on legs to use as an outdoor side tables?

  • +1

The 450mm pine panel is $2.50 at West Footscray.
