Intel NUC X15 15.6" QHD 165Hz i7-11800H RTX 3060 Laptop $1899 + Delivery ($0 VIC C&C/ to Metro) + Surcharge @ Centre Com

61

I was looking for a simple, light and decent gaming laptop and this one seems to tick all the boxes. 15.6" thin and light magnesium-alloy chassis, weighs less than 2kg. Screen seems to be non-glossy, it has an optical mechanical keyboard with silent switches, glass touchpad, and lots of RGB blings if that's your thing. It has a single 16GB RAM module installed but you could get another SODIMM for dual channel performance. It also appears to have the non-Max-P version of the RTX 3060 which is a bonus.

2% surcharge for AMEX payments.

If you're not stuck on the QHD screen, this is likely a better option https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/kraken-x15-f-kraken-x15-f…

Same CPU, better gpu, 240hz 1080p screen, IPS, more storage, slightly more expensive

    • Heh didn't realise these things had TB4 and Hdmi 2.1. Bloody decent.

Yeah real great. I didn't intend on it, but it's actually way better than my gaming desktop in every way. I've got the RTX 3070 NUC X15 with 2TB nVME and 32gb of ram. Totally overkill :)

    • Indeed, I was looking at those as well (BPC also had the 3060 models but no stock at the moment). That would be perfect for 1080p! I already pulled the trigger on the QHD option though (and probably game in 1080p anyway…)

    • +1 this

the upgrade to 3070 is worth the $100.

Personally, I prefer FHD over QHD on a 15" screen.

    • Would it be possible to add an additional 16 gig ram stick to this one?

      • Yes you can

Looks great! Done a quick Google but coulnd't find much… is Kraken their own brand? Who owns them?

      • bpc tech's own brand. They buy barebone intel NUC and config them as per their website. The laptop has no markings on the outside whatsoever.

        original deal posted here

3060 is just not a very good QHD card.

    • really? but enough for VR games thats my main purpose

It's fine for games like Beat Sabre but for games like Half Life Alyx, no way. You'll be sacrificing a lot of detail for FPS.

At this moment in time, I can no longer recommend gaming laptops over desktops. Prices have changed dramatically.

  • I know its supposed to be a semi-gaming laptop, but no webcam in the days of everyone working from home seems more than a little short sighted.

    • It has a webcam, just not listed on their website for some reason.

With a Windows Hello IR camera, it's great :D

  • so this is basically same as the kraken just slight different config on ram, ssd ?
hmm kraken $1999 but with double storage, same ram but 2x8gb (sold out)

    • It is the same laptop with a different sticker and different config. They are all based on the same barebones laptop by TongFang, other companies (like Kraken) just add RAM, SSD, OS and their own badges to it.

As DVbargain have already mentioned, the Kraken is a far better deal for only 100$ extra, the 3070 is a much bigger step up from 3060 than 3080 is from 3070.

1.8k for a 3060 and a 11800H is not really a deal anymore at this time especially with no mux switch. The lack of a proper branding (yes I know its codesigned by intel, still doesn’t matter) will affect resale value as well.

Sure the QHD versions is not in stock for the Kraken. However, given the X15 does not come with a mux switch, a natural upgrade option down the line is to get an external monitor to bypass Optimus. You won’t be able to upgrade the GPU, on the otherhand.

If you get this the difference dual channel ram makes (this only has one stick) is massive. I have the Kraken model with the FHD screen and the 3070 chip. The performance difference in adding a second stick was around 20% in some tests. It was performing worse than some 3060 laptops with the single stick, especially when using the built in screen.

Using HDMI with the single stick was a huge difference, after adding the second stick the gap closed considerably, but there is still a decent gap due to the lack of a MUX switch.

I, and many others, had some teething and quality control issues with the Kraken (which is identical to this) but once I spent some (a lot) of time troubleshooting I got around the issues I had and the performance and the thermals have been great ever since. I've even managed to get 8 hours of battery life out of it a couple of times when trying to maximise it, although it usually sits around 4-5 hours if I don't put any effort into it.

If you go back into my post history you should find my benchmarks etc from when I was testing a few months ago.

    • Just read through your posts, what a journey! Now I'm not sure what to do, the QHD 3060 is on its way so I guess I have to see how things will turn out. In hindsight, FHD 3070 could have been a better option although I do like playing RPGs so the QHD would suit me better, but it's a 15/6" screen… ah whatever :)

      • If it's on the way already I'd suggest making sure you figure out what RAM it has and order a second stick.

I was tossing up on the decision for the QHD or FHD screen, decided the higher FPS mattered more to me and my eyesight is barely good enough to matter at 15". My gaming room has an old 40" FHD TV that has been on the wishlist for an upgrade to a 4k high refresh rate screen so that will cover my eye candy needs.

  • Just a follow-up :)

It came with 2x 8GB Crucial RAM modules (DDR-4/3200 running at 1600MHz), not a single 16GB.
Storage is a Team Group MP33 512 GB M.2 NVMe drive, which is PCIe Gen 3 x4, NVMe 1.3. It has an endurance rating of 400TBW and speeds of 1,700 MB/s read and 1,400 MB/s write. It's a decent drive.
Windows 10 Pro was already installed but they included the retail box with the USB stick which was nice.

Fan spins up/down correctly depending on load. I ran Unigine Valley benchmark (1440p/Ultra/8xAA) using the laptop screen as well as using an external monitor (XB271HU @1440p), the difference is negligible (67.9 average FPS/Score 2841/Min FPS: 33.6/Max FPS: 123.9 using laptop screen) but I get tearing on the external monitor as it's only 60Hz on HDMI. Coming from a 1050 Max-Q laptop, this is huge improvement - I know it's not 3070 but it will do.

The screen is beautiful, can't complain about it at all. I'm using at 125% scaling which is still manageable with my dodgy eyes.
Keyboard is really nice, although the backlighting takes its time to come on if it's turned off due to laptop being idle.

    • Does your invoice say -

      Memory: 1x 16GB DDR4 (expandable up to 64GB)

If you are looking to upgrade to 32gb later on, you will need to buy 2 x 16gb, best to ask them about it.

      Pretty dodgy to say 1 x 16gb and swap with 2 x 8gb.

      • Invoice doesn't say what's inside, only the SKU:

        Intel NUC X15 15.6" QHD 165Hz i7-11800H RTX3060 Laptop
        SKU: BKC71EBFU6000_16G_512G_W10P

Interestingly, they completely removed the laptop from their website… Maybe I imagined things?
