15,000 IU/day? Sounds like an obscene amount.

        • Its all relevant to your current systemic level.

          Sounds like an obscene amount

Until you look at how little 1000iu is and realise that coming from a low vitamin d level you can bolster yourself with 15,000 it a day for a month before reverting to 5,000iu. It's perfectly safe as long as not for the long term. I noticeably found my happiness improve

Something like 95% of australians are deficient in this and need a significant top up

@Drakesy: I take high-dose Vitamin D as well as part of my regime to stave off winter depression.
Rhonda Patrick, who does the Found my Fitness, podcast has released a lot of good summary material about the benefits of Vitamin D. Some people think of Vitamin D as more akin to a hormone than a vitamin, given how many bodily processes it is implicated in.

          • @Drakesy: Make sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Does sound a lot until you look into what the numbers actually mean and how silly the daily recommended dose is.

"Another study found that 30 minutes of midday summer sun exposure in Oslo, Norway was equivalent to consuming 10,000–20,000 IU of vitamin D ( 8 ). The commonly recommended daily dose of vitamin D is 600 IU (15 mcg)"

      • I take 5000iu a day and just had my bloods done, vit D3 came in at 147 nmol/L which I was happy with. From memory I think it was around 80 at the last test a couple of years back.

Doesn’t work that way for many people with dark skin

But mother doesn't like to go outside in the summer months, it burns and dries out her wrinkled skin. She doesn't need a melanoma at her age!

I'm all about getting sun instead but most people are vit D deficient and don't realise.
Plenty of studies aligning low D levels and worse covid outcomes.
If you are doing to supp anything, do vit D. At least until you get over your first infection.

  • These have helped me a lot. Recommended

    • Serious question - what does it actually do for your that you think it helped you ? I thought we only need it for calcium absorption, at least that's what I got told by my gp and she only recommends 1000IU per day.

My Vitamin D levels were really low. It was 12 nmol/L. It should be minimum of 30 nmol/L. Vitamin D defiency is of serious concern even in Australia. Vitamin D deficiency can cause mood changes, Joint pain etc. It can lead to Cardiovascular diseases,Kidney disease, diabetes etc. Its a silent killer because you dont even realise you are Vitamin D deficient.

Initially I tried going out in the sun more and try to get vitamin D naturally but its hard especiialy in winter and its not enough. I had to take supplements. After taking these supplements I got my vitamin d tested a year later and it had come to normal. I have been taking them ever since. I take 2 tabs of 5000 IU once a week.

I guess you dont need to take these if you are getting enough Vitamin D. Just goto your GP and get it tested. See if you are deficient or not.

    Thanks OP.

Been taking 10,000IU daily for a year and got my blood results back and it's within normal range, albeit in the higher end.

I do night-shift so this helps me alot. Ever since I taken the higher dose I feel so much better..
