Seems like there are material/production issues - first couple reviews on the 1200x1200mm page look bad.

  • Anyone know how these compare to the Rhino Rack Platform or ARB Base Rack?

    • +2

Other than these are cheaper than Rhino and ARB, the reason I have the 1500x1200 size fitted is because it has its own low mount kit, so the overall height sits lower than both Rhino and ARB.

      • Do you have it on roof rails?

I think both Rhino and ARB have the option for (what Rhino calls the) Barebone which reduces the height slightly as well.

        • No, I have mine on Rola low mount kit. Lower than those backbone system.

    • In my research the Rhino Barebone system has issues, check out this video.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMx232haRyo

Since I have roof rail I chose the titan.

      • The first 7 minutes so far is interesting.

Did you consider taking off the roof rails and installing using Barebone/direct mount ones?

    • The Rhino racks have weight limitations. With the Rola having the long bars (as opposed to the "short across" bars of the Yakima), I expected its static load to be reduced. However its rated static load is 300kg.

Fitting kit with cross bars is around $496 RRP.

Please also see your car's roof weight capacity

      • The Rhino weight issue is because they de-rate the vehicle roof rating by 30% iirc for off road, where others don’t.

On paper this leaves less ‘rated’ load capacity, but since all racks generally use the same fixing points to the roof, and this is the weak point, they're all as good or bad as each other in reality.

I’ve got a rhino platform on backbone (to keep height low) and it’s rock solid. Prob only 30kg rated load but I’m very comfortable with ~100kg normal driving, ~60kg off-road.

But, in some cases I understand Rhino (and maybe others) call for adding nutserts into roof sheet metal, which doesn’t sound like a great idea, especially if DIY install.

These Rolla trays with low mount seem really good too.

        • It depends on the vehicle and mount, on mine the Rhino with backbone has no offroad reduction.

          • +1

@LowRange: Yep it does depend. if the roof rating is high enough the limit becomes rhino setup, which varies with rack size and mounts. Bit of a minefield.

The de-rating might depend on manufacturer sometimes too.

The load problem really comes from the low rating of many vehicle roofs, and the heavy platforms themselves. A problem with any brand, but moreso rhino for those that want warranty.

            • @watts: Yes exactly, the limitation is almost always the roof rating set by the manufacturer and the mounting system, not the actual rack itself. So in a lot of cases it doesn't matter what rack it is.

There was a big deal a while back with Tyler Thompson (who's a nice guy) but his Rhino rack was pop riveted in to the roof skin on his Navara using small rivets and it sheered off. Rhino got an unfair rap over ratings when the same thing would of happened with any rack attached that way.

But they have a handy calculator now https://www.rhinorack.com/en-au/load-rating-calculator

Rola are really decent for the money, but i'm super happy with the Rhino on the backbone mount.

              • @LowRange: Yeah they did get an unfair rap in some respects.

The calculator really helps clarifying the limitations for buyers. It was a lot more confusing before, but because I was DIY and mindful of weights I read the instructions prior I had a good idea what I was getting myself into.

Im happy with mine too, but not sure I’d get another platform. Permanent Bars + occasional basket when needed is prob better for my use.

                • @watts: Yes i installed mine on my own as well, and done a lot of research on it because i wanted the slightly shorter rack but Rhino, and 2 of their installers were insistent it wont fit with the backbone. But my measurements said otherwise, i bought it and it fit like a glove and looks awesome!

So I'm really happy with the flat rack, and it's a lot stronger then the numbers would indicate and the safety margins built in are fairly high to arrive at the official numbers.

  • Rhino is backbone.
The weight capacity for a roof rack on any car is restricted by the manufacturer rated roof load, pretty sure this differs based on static or dynamic load also.

    • Take a LandCruiser 100 series wagon, manufacturer static weight limit is 200kgs.

      • 113kg load for Rhino-rack backbone. Static load limit is 150kg, "off road" rated to 113kg, this is reduced due to the 37kg weight of the rack kit
      • 89kg load for Rhino-rack RCH. Static load limit is 120kg, deduct 31kg weight of the rack kit

      • ~120kg load for Yakima (no "backbone" only regular mounting points for this model) static load limit 150kg, so assuming ~30kgs for the kit

      • ~170kg load for Rola using methodology for the Yakima

I would take the "300kgs" for the Rola with a grain of salt - Yakima and Rhino both set a static weight limit for their platforms at 150kgs.

FYI the Adventure Kings is a re-branded Yakima - and is $799 for a 100 series - when in stock

      • I believe the Rhino with backbone on a 100 series should be 113kg for both static and offroad and there's no separate reduction for offroad. The longer rack is a few kg heavier, so it's at 110kg for both on and off road.

Wow best timing! Literally had this rack with fitting rails in a cart for $980 but held off until I could get to the store for pick-up. With this deal got the rack and rails for $700. A++++.

Phew! Lucky this isn't a Rhino rack! Plus I only want it so I can strap my inflatable SUP where everyone can see as I drive to the beach to buy a $10 latte.

  • Just fitted mine the other day after the last Supercheap/eBay special. Great price and no trouble so far.

  • Any way to get gutter mount legs for this or do you have to buy roof rack bars also?

  • Easy price beat @ anaconda
    They are a rola dealer

  • 8% off SCA gift cards from Suncorp Rewards.

  • I wanna the 2000x1400 but seems no stocks

Checked in stock in beenleigh store but it turned out of stock in checkout :(

    So bad

  • You can buy these through the eBay store to save even more. I just got the 1500 * 1200 titan tray for $372.72 pickup.
