    I like the attitude.

actually used this when I worked as a technician, works a treat. No need to have a benched system to do drive checks

Just a head up. The dock will disconnect itself very often if using it as das, you need to install keepAliveHD to make this dock usable. Download here: https://github.com/stsrki/KeepAliveHD

    • Nice tip and incl link. Handy to know and have that app. Thanks.

Not sure it's a good idea to keep your hard drive running non-stop. Not many HDs are built to work in that mode for long time. However in particular circumstances keepAliveHD may be useful.

      • I have my NAS running 24/7 for a few years without issue (using desktop HDD's). Disks set not to sleep. I hear what you are saying but question whether constant start/stops are good compared to running uninterrupted. A question that I never found a proper answer for. I must Google that one again :-)

        • yeah but why would you buy a dock that has this limitation

you WANT your hard drives to go to sleep, plenty of docks don't have this issue, they will happily supply the hard drive with whatever power they need so they can enter into a sleep state and still wake up on demand

no software hack needed, you save electricity and you'll probably never need to replace the hard drive due to failure

and yes, sleep states are better, drives are vulnerable when they are spinning not when they are in a sleep state, significant vibrations close the the hard drive while they are spinning can cause issues, so does heat / poor ventilation

hard drives entering a sleep state is a no-brainer

this is the type of software you use AFTER you've committed on a purchase and to try and SALVAGE a situation

          • @desync: I'd expect most wouldn't be using this as a permanent solution. Atleast it doesn't look like it's designed this way.
Would want something a little more secure from knocks than just gravity holding it in

      • Well, is a server, it is meant to be running 24/7. Plus the app allows you to control how often you want it to run, and how big of a file you want it to write. With this particular dock, I have to set it to less than 10 minute per read/write otherwise after few days it will disconnect itself from my server. Play around with the settings to make it work for you.

    • keepAliveHD sounds like it might keep the hard drive awake

far from ideal, you want your drives to enter into a sleep state

if you are using this as a dock or network share that is reason enough to look elsewhere, these things are cheap anyway

  • Shows as $45.99, not $32.19. Am I missing something?

There is a 30% off clickable voucher

      • Thanks. I didn't spot that.
@OP: Might be worth nothing in description for plebs like me who don't look properly or use Amazon much!

First glace: wow a smart toaster.

    • Still cheaper than this toaster.

      • Why do I want this?

      • That's a massive piece of toast. Even looks cheese filled

  • Instead of a NAS, can we hook up two of these (to make 4 drives) to the router and use SAMBA?

    • Sure possible, speed isn’t great, watch out for possible power supply failure…

  • I have another brand basically identical. Very handy for easy swapping drives about. I use excess old spin drives from laptops that had life boosts with SSD upgrades. The clone without an attached PC copies very efficiently too. Faster than via USB

    • i use a simplecom version as a ghetto nas plugged into the plex server - running flawlessly for years
