Are we able to upgrade the ram ourselves on this? Or are there no slots on the motherboard?

    • +3

Yes you can, there are two slots on the motherboard. Do be aware that you NEED to use DDR3L RAM, not DDR3 with this machine. You can upgrade up to 16GB RAM so 2x 8GB sticks max.

I upgraded to 32GB using this RAM from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00IV19HZE/ Then sold the 2x4GB on Gumtree ;-)

is this case has enough space for an additional low end graphics card such as gtx 1050 ti?

    • 1050Ti Low Profile will work.

      • Also 1650 LP I believe

  • I have a friend who needs a basic desktop machine to work from home - simple Office, Outlook, web browsing, zoom (with webcam), they mainly access their work stuff through a remote desktop connection to their work network.

For around this price is there anything of better value? I was thinking upgrade to 240GB SSD, buy 2x screens, already have spare keyboard mouse, job done?

Would you recommend 16gb RAM for the above, or is 8GB more than sufficient?

    • +2

This should be more than cromulent for their needs.

Honestly, if they are only doing basic non-intensive stuff, 8gb is more than cromulent enough. The 128GB SSD is paltry but is enough to install enough programs and windows, as long as you don't put too many videos on their.

  • For sake of price comparison, noting Vostro vs Optiplex

Would this do the job as a Plex server?

  • 3040's front io's are attached straight to the motherboard, very interesting.

  • Remember no windows 11 on these without hacking.

    • What stops it getting the automatic upgrade through Windows Update?

      • The CPU is not supported. It's ridiculous, and there's ways around it, it's just not easy for non-technical people.

        https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/min…

        • That's annoying. I did look up the way around it and it does seem fairly easy for someone like me.

What was worrying is how it says Microsoft may refuse future updates of Windows 11? Do you think there's much worry here?

  • As the OS is Win10 professional, does that mean the OS licence can be transferred to a different PC?

If so, can anyone point me to instructions how to transfer the license?

I have a Win8 (OEM license) laptop I want to put Win10 on, and this PC will become a Linux box.

    • +1

No, it's digitally tied/licenced to the unit's hardware profile

    • +1

The license key is in the bios, can't be transferred.

    • +1

No transfers required - just install Win 10 onto your Win 8 laptop, and the BIOS license key will work. You don't need a specific Windows 10 key…

      • Hmm, problem is that my Win8 laptop has never touched the internet since I purchased it, and it says "unlicensed" or similar in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. So I'm guessing it doesn't have a BIOS license key, and as it hasn't had windows updates for several years, it'd be a bit risky to connect it to the internet now.

I'll just continue to live with the Win8 "tiled" interface. It's only a minor annoyance.

I'll just continue to live with the Win8 "tiled" interface.

          Thanks for wasting everyone's time.

Please read my post again - it doesn't mention anything about connecting to the internet. You can just install Windows 10 directly onto that laptop - the key in the BIOS will work, as will the key on the licence sticker (if it has one).

If you don't care about moving from 8 to 10, then why did you say "I have a Win8 (OEM license) laptop I want to put Win10 on" 🤷‍♂️

          • @Nom: Apologies, Windows licensing is confusing to me.

If Win8 is saying "unlicensed", then it appears my bios doesn't have a license, or doesn't Win8 recognize it? If the latter, how did the license get onto the laptop, which was bought a couple of years before Win10 existed?

            • +1

@Russ: Win 8 and 10 licences are identical 👍 So it doesn't matter that the laptop came before Windows 10.

If Win 8 is saying unlicensed, it's probably just because the licence key has never validated against the activation servers, you did say it's not been on the internet.

Just take a backup image, then use the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft to make yourself a Win 10 install USB.
Then install it. If it all goes to crap, restore your backup image.

  • Would this play 60fps 4k video without anymore hardware?

    • Nevermind I found answer online - it doesn't (for Netflix anyway). Would need a gfx card.
