    Looks like you can choose TDP's in bios - 35w, 45w & 54w

These mini pc's are getting awesome in specs these days.

Just waiting for a decent USB-C powered one, so I can run it off a power brick.
If laptops can run off a 130w dock, no reason a mini can't.

I've been running a minisforum mini pc by 100w usb C power for about 6 months. CPU is definitely more throttled than DC power but works well.

      • Cheers mate.

Yeah, I've heard that too. Just hoping for better performance one soon!
        HODL :)

Assuming this runs on 19V DC, then you just need something like this - https://www.amazon.com.au/Cablecc-Female-5-52-1mm-Charge-Lap… - to run it from USB PD, exactly like you would use to power a none-USB-PD laptop from USB PD.

(that particular unit is 65W which is prolly not enough for this machine)

      • +2

        You mean something like this.

        https://core-electronics.com.au/usb-type-c-31-pd-to-55mm-bar…

It is rated at 5A, and it definitely has an E-Mark chip in it to set the correct voltage, which is important.

They have ones for lower voltages, and I'd already be using a 20V one and a 12V one in the 2 USB-C sockets of a certain manufacturer's 200W PD charger to power my PC and its screen, if it wasn't that that PD charger for some reason supports 9V and 15V but not 12V.

        • Perfect if the barrel tip size is correct, and if 100W is enough - I don't have one of these machines, so can't confirm either 😁

            @Nom:

Perfect if the barrel tip size is correct

I've been using 5.5x2.1 mm plugs and sockets for years, and suddenly everything new seemed to have 5.5x2.5mm sockets on them. They are inter-operable in one direction, but not the other. The cable I linked to will fit either a 5.5x2.1mm socket or a 5.5x2.5mm socket. A cable with a 5.5x2.1mm plug will only fit a 5.5x2.1mm socket.

@GordonD: I'm glad somebody else has noticed. I thought I was going crazy.

I have a Gigabyte G27Q monitor that I bought a few years ago, and it has the 5.5x2.5mm DC input. I wanted to buy an inline toggle switch like this because I found the auto standby extremely unreliable, and so that seemed like the simplest solution. The amount of trouble I had trying to find 2.5mm cables because 99% of them were 2.1mm was just unbelievable…

    • so I can run it off a power brick

I run PCs with M-ATX motherboards off power bricks. This computer I'm using now has an M-ATX motherboard with a 35W AMD 8600GE on it, and its running off a power brick through a pico-PSU. When you use CPUs with integrated GPUs in them, rather than a separate GPU, they use surprisingly little power.

I had to use an old ATX PSU I had lying around for the first time in years when it turned out the other 8600 I have, a "65W" 8600G, actually draws 90W on full load, which tripped the overload on the pico-PSU.

    • Just use a cheap dc to usb c adapter

  • how would this go with plex/jellyfin and or frigate?

    • +2

my proposed usage is proxmox, frigate, ha, compreface, doubletake, openwrt. win11x3

but i haven't bought one yet

      • does this have a pcie slot ?

        • you don't need a coral if openvino works
and idk if spare pcie wifi slot

          • @FoxJump: The wifi slot is the m.2 type. Whether it's spare and/or would work as pcie, i can't say

      • Guessing not enough ram for 3 instances of win11 and frigate with openvino

    • +1

Wouldn't an N100 PC work just the same?

      • depends how much you're putting in it

    • +2

You really want something with Quicksync for transcoding if you are looking at a plex/jellyfin install… and that means intel.

      • +1

everyone says that. yet also some posts say that it's okay with amd igpu.so maybe its just old hearsay
regardless, i pretranscode everything and keep two copies

        • +2

It isn't that you can't use an AMD igpu for transcoding, you can but the intel CPUs with Quicksync do it using almost no power and without breaking a sweat.

          • @Aggregate3: does that mean that frigate with amd igpu is gonna break more sweats using vaapi than intel quicksync ?

      • any recommendations for mini pc with intel?

    • N100 should be good enough for these workloads.

    • +2

As someone who got a minisforum AMD board (BD790i) which I initially planned to do hardware transcoding on the igpu, I regret not getting an intel with quicksync for this task. particularly if you need to transcode 4K, HDR, modern codecs etc.
I did get it working but there were a number of issues/limitations with the performance and I ended up passing through a Nvidia graphics card, While the Nvidia GPU is probably more performant than using intel Quicksync, it also uses far more power which is not ideal for an always on system. As I use the same system for game streaming, the Nvidia graphics card is more justifiable. I'm keeping an eye out for good deals on n100 based systems, would be great if I could get it in a 4-6 bay NAS so I can retire my old qnap.

      • transcoding aside, i thought amds use less power generally? no?

        • Yeah potentially, though I'd you add a seperate GPU then that would blow out the power usage

      • N100 can't encode AV1. 880M Can

        • Good to know for future proofing

    • These AMD mini PCs are awesome but if you need Plex transcoding, then definitely look at an Intel mini pc with Quick Sync. They are unbeatable for low power consumption if you only need one or two 4K streams simultaneously.

Source: I use both N100 and AMD mini pcs in my home lab.

Just FYI, there is no HDMI 2.1 144hz on this one.

  • +2

Wait for UM760 Slim to drop to “normal” price of 479. Includes 16gb ddr5 and 1TB SSD. Mine shipped with crucial ram and Kingston SSD.

    • +2

Yeah agreed. Twice the storage, HDMI 2.1, and a processor that while comparable as far as benchmarks go, is newer by over a year, so should use less power.

The only advantage I see the BOSGAME having is dual 2.5G Ethernet, but that's pretty niche really. Even so, dongles exist ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is there going to be one of these with Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 anytime soon?

    • not at a decent price. Maybe after AI 350 and Intel 258v production picks up.

  • I read somewhere that bosgame mini pcs don't have Bluetooth. I might be mistaken though.

    • Definitely mistaken. I'm using one of these for Batocera, connecting the controller via Bluetooth. It has worked great so far.

    • Slightly incorrect information. It comes with Bluetooth but the module works horrible (I saw comments regarding this issue before buying and didn't care much). I have a Bluetooth speaker connected to this particular model mini pc and the sound disconnects/stutters every 5 seconds. Very annoying but thats the only issue so far. It is a great pc that handles my work and League/Dota/CS/WoW Cata gaming perfectly on my 1440p screen - no GPU needed. Waiting for a monitor arm to get it mounted behind the screen.

What is this thing capable of gaming wise?

  • What a scam lol

$201 off coupon it comes down to $468

and now that the coupon has expired the normal price is $489

    • I know. totally.
i checked this morning and i'm like .. whaaaaaaaaaaaaat.. Narr.
i'll make do with my existing computer, and an old laptop for my home-made openwrt wifi AP.
