  • Brilliant camera, brilliant price. I bought mine from HN a few months ago for $398!

    • was camera from HN had IS or non IS lens?

      • +1

My 1100D bought for $398 a few months back was non IS
        Great camera
        But upgrade calls

    • Why on earth does this have one negative vote let alone two?

      Good ole OzBargain.

      • +1

Brilliant price - fair enough, but brilliant camera is really an over statement (probably 2 people negged it).

At this price (really good), the lens is kinda free throw in. For the lens, lack of IS is one thing, auto focus speed is another minor issue. 720p video is kinda below par for DSLR. If you can spend $150-$220 more, then 550D or 600D are better choices.

It is best to try it out first (go to Harvey Norman or a camera store). When you do, use the view finder to focus.

        • Yup. If you were looking for the poorest DSLR currently available then this would be it.

Sure it's an afford package if you have an ultra limited budget but as far as DSLR kits go, this is the bottom of the market.

Calling it a brilliant camera is like calling the cheapest LCD TV a brilliant TV.

        • brilliant for a beginner* is what I should've said!

Waiting for one with an IS lens.

    • +2

Won't come at this price tho.

    Made in Taiwan
"EOS 1100D is also the only Canon EOS model currently in production that is not made in Japan but in Taiwan". - wikipedia

    • I'm giving serious consideration to one of these, I don't really care where it was made at this price TBH. :)

I was talking to a mate who considers himself pretty DSLR savvy, and he reckons the various Japanese companies' quality control is identical for the camera bodies whether they're actually manufactured in Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, China. He swears build quality is identical, and that they'll be just as reliable; but that the only issue will be resale value, coz everyone wants their camera to be Japanese made.

That said, he reckons lenses are a bit of a different story. He swears that the lenses which are included with the camera body from the manufacturer (which were made in Japan) are far superior to those cheaper additional bundled ones which are made in Thailand or Malaysia.

Now, hopefully someone in the know can confirm or refute this, I'm just parroting what my buddy told me, but it sounds plausible enough. FWIW, he's a Nikon man, but he reckons the same applies to all DSLRs! ;)

For anybody interested in upgrading, I've done some pricing research recently on the 600D & 60D in case I decided to splurge a bit more cash. ATM, Shoppingsquare has the best price for each that I can find with twin IS lens kits; $782 & $1098 each (delivered) respectively! I know there was a hot deal recently for a price match at JB on grey 60Ds, but I'm not optimistic about getting any of my local JB's on board with that play! ;)

      [edit] I should've done a bit less considering & a bit more clicking…me snooze, me looze! :s

      • The resale value of the body depends on more on the actual model than where it was made. Build quality improves as you get into better models. Build quality of 600D (Japan) cannot compare to 60D (also Japan).

My DSLR mates told me avoid any kit lens (especially avoid the twin lens kit - TLK is a big no no) - if someone recommends a Twin Lens Kit to you, go find another person who actually knows DSLR. Someone who knows DSLR would normally recommend a DSLR body only + a really good lens or above average lens (or if you are on a tight budget, they would recommend a good all round lens). While there are some decent / good kit lenses, none of them is stellar. A really good lens (in Canon's DSLR world, generally means a L lens) can easily cost more than a DSLR body.

For the cameras you mentioned, none of the kit lenses is worth buying. The only reason you would get a kit lens is if the price difference between having one and without one is < $30 and you don't have a lens yet (so that you can get it as an interim lens until you get a proper lens). If you are on a really tight budget, and you must have a flexible zoom lens, you could make an exception - but in the long run, the more kit lenses you buy, the more you are going to regret.

Also, when your DSLR mates tell you to spend less on the body but get a good lens initially, it generally is quite hard to sink in… but once you have the DSLR for a little while, you will realise they really gave you the correct/best advice.

        • Thanks for the info dude. Sounds like good advice, I just thought I'd throw in the prices I'd found for similar products to those that were popular on OzB recently just in case people wanted them.

The resale value thing wasn't inter-model within brands, it was intra-model. He was citing a case where Nikon apparently shifted manufacture from Japan to Thailand whilst one model (D3100???) was current. The Japanese model retained good 2nd hand resale value, yet the Thai manufactured equivalent was nearly a pariah despite identical build quality! Evidently, he reckons Canon have intentions of doing the same with the 600, and maybe the 60 down the track.

I think we're on the same page where buddy reckons with some TLKs, one lens may well be quite good (depending on the bundle as I said) but the other most certainly will be rather ordinary. As you said, a 'good' lens may cost more than the entire bundle, and as my mate said sometimes you can get the TLK with one very decent lens + one mediocre one cheaper than the body only, or cheaper than the single if that single is much better or more flexible - say 18-200 etc.

I know it goes against the grain for hardcore DSLR guys, but IMHO for beginners like myself; unless I can get a good price for a good flexible single; I still reckon there's a potential place for the right TLK, at the right price as a starting point! ;)

  • Showing my complete noobness here, but what is 'IS/non-IS'?
I'm a beginner to the world of SLR/DSLR and am looking for a decent beginner camera that I won't want to upgrade after having it for a few months.

    • +3

It refers to Image stabilization.Basically allows you to take less blurry pictures while holding it, without having to resort to make the shutter speed really fast. This is a good camera to get the basics down with.

      • Thanks for that!

  • I got the $386 HN Deal a while back. Pretty happy with the camera and it leaves money for buying half decent lenses. If you're after a 'learner' camera, this one isn't a silly choice!

  • I am going overseas soon…Will I get a tax invoice from Dealworkz Australia? I have never heard about them before…and what shipping carrier do they use? AusPost?

    • They use AusPost. Normally all you get is the Paypal receipt, but you can request an invoice from them which lists the GST portion.

Dude, seriously…I know it's late & all but FFS it's in the title!!!

      • I'm kind of wasted (the Dockers just lost because they boned themselves by leaving their forward 50 empty, so… Black Russians!), and I saw that.

OH NO! stay away from ozbargain drunk! trust me

    Hey guys,

The product is now SOLD OUT! Thanks for your appreciation.

    The Dealworkz Team

    • A neg vote for being sold out, within 3 minutes of posting to inform the community.

      Good ole OzBargain.

      • +1

Yep, agreed…you've gotta wonder eh? Posting at 1am on a Saturday too; just what a dedicated rep wants, a neg for their efforts!

        • The weird part? I'm known on OzB as a negative voter and non-deal-poster. The difference between me and people who vote neg on comments like that? I care about researching whether the deal is good or not and understand that there's no such thing as unlimited stock.

        • I'm known on OzB as a negative voter and non-deal-poster.

Sorry dude, you lost that crown to jv quite some time ago, IVI's putting in a worthy challenge to jv ATM too! :p

I know what you mean though, this thing was going for 6hrs+…I'm kicking myself for umm'ing & aah'ing, then missing out…there's no way I can blame the rep for that! I just shake my head at some of the things I see on OzB nowadays. I still reckon neg votes on comments should be identified, that way there's some accountability back into the place again! ;)

        • +1

Ditto. I kind of wanted this but didn't buy it. Opportunity given and lost, fair enough.

But people who vote neg on comments that are intended to be helpful… I don't get it. "I don't like this" is not the same thing as "you've lied/deceived/posted a non-bargain/given pathetic customer service/etc.". One deserves a neg. The other doesn't.

        • Yep, agreed. That's why I reckon some accountability is in order.

If we neg a comment because we don't like it, someone at least then has the recourse to ask why…and as you say, if it's valid they'll most likely cop it sweet; but if it's egocentric, frivolous or vexatious then the community will rapidly let that person know why that petulant behaviour is not on around OzB. Sadly, as it stands now the anonymity of the comment voting system is actually robbing people of the opportunity to learn how to behave appropriately in online communities like OzB, and society in general!

Anyway, I think we've solved enough of the world's troubles for one night, have a good night tantryl, sink a couple more BR's for me! It's off to sleepy land for me now! :)

  • +2

Wouldn't worry all that much guys. Had mine for a month & sold it for an upgrade.
Canon has released some nice 'pro' camera's, but nothing in the lower range. So something is imminent.
If they are to compete with Nikon (eg.D3200) there should be some decent upgrades to specs, which at least means prices dropping for the old units.
It is scary once you look at the lens options and prices, so for a beginner I think the twin IS kit lenses are a valid option to get started. But, no, I myself am paying double or triple for the better quality in the basic lenses, and then saving for the next 10 yrs for proper lenses.

  • Received this just now,
