  • what's the student purchase program?

    • +1

You enter your student email address and if the domain is part of their SPP they email you a coupon to apply to an order. You can find it under “deals” in their menu

    • +1

I added the link to the post. FAQ's state "Academic/Student e-mail address of your institute that has a .edu domain."

      • cool…. can we also get shopback on top of the student discount as well?

        • +1

Looks pretty clear that you won't. As you'd be applying an unapproved coupon. Bigger saving from the cashback.

Does anyone know what is 3070 TI's TGP?

I assume it's still the same chassis as last year's model with overheating issues?

    • I'm interested to know how this 3070Ti performs as well. I'm deciding between this or topup a little for the Alienware m15 R7 (RTX3060) if the performance between these two is not big. The m15 can be optioned with CherryMX keyboard and has the Dolby Vision screen.

      • The Alienware has a better build quality however have gone downhill over yesteryear laptops, plisticky etc

      • +6

I've gutted dozens of laptops, and went through a bunch of recent models from almost every manufacturer out there (except Asus as fate would have it)

6 months ago I wouldn't have imagined myself saying this, but Gigabyte has thoroughly surprised me and won my heart, leaving behind Dell, HP, Razer, Acer and all. Aorus 17g namely.

but regarding recent Dells, oh god where do I start. Dell have deliberately created issues for consumers when it comes to storage upgrades. they really went out of their way to achieve that, creating part number hell to find the right bracket for the right SSD length for the right chassis. Dell engineers themselves turn up with the wrong part half the time

also their thermal designs suck. also their keyboards have gone downhill. also the build quality in general is just not what it used to be. not to mention that they started putting crappy dim 120hz panels with weak color reproduction into almost every G model

almost to a degree that I would recommend a refurbished Acer over a new Dell G or Alienware, just because of smoother end user experience and easier serviceability

damn! whatever happened to Dell. I even stopped recommending Latitude lineup. total disaster

        • What gigabyte series have you found the best?

          • +1

@KeysAU: I have seen X/K series, Aorus, Aero, and I think Aorus are the best, but you want the ones that have alloy body and mech keyboard

JW still have Aorus 15g with a 3080 refurb listed for $2123 which is amazing, but it has plastic body

Aorus 17g XD which is what I got has 11800H, 3070, 300hz FHD panel which is just what I wanted. mech keyboard, all metal build - seriously, a tank. can't be twisted, can't be bent, which is awesome in my books.

I don't know how they achieved it, but it's much quieter than anything else I've been through in the past few weeks. pushes out solid FPS without any signs of thermal struggle. no idea how

            • @shabaka: Thanks you! I used to do laptop hardware replacements years ago, good to keep up with the changes.

              • +1

@KeysAU: glad I could help! one of these days I am going to call it quits and build a desktop, but that day has not come yet haha

I service laptops very often, and I like getting hands on new hardware all the time, so I buy things, try them, sell them on

recently though I got stuck buying and returning instead, because nothing I got was any good. this Gigabyte is the first good news I had since Black Friday. holy cow

at one point in time I was waiting for 2 refunds to go through ($4k roughly) and bought another system already. my credit card loves me

            • @shabaka: Aorus and Aero both use sggressive power limits though… I didn't mind as its better than thermal throttling as it usually causes lags in games.

              • @meong: yes, they do. somehow they manage that very well, I got a quiet gaming experience with solid framerates and the whole thing stays cool as. magic

would be interesting to run their 3070 against Lenovo L5P full powered 3060

        • thanks for your insight, where would Lenovo stand?

          • +1

@assarabbiya: Lenovo are actually very good, Legion 5 Pro for instance. Jarrod is pushing them for a reason

it didn't make it to my shopping basket because:
            - I wanted better build quality than Legion 5, so I would have to go with Pro
            - however Pro is only configured with QHD panels and I don't want QHD. yeah I am one from FHD gaming laptops camp

QHD makes no real difference at such screen sizes, IMO, but lowers framerate and puts unnecessary stress on GPU and CPU, and you also have to deal with scaling in Windows yada yada, so I only want laptops with FHD panels

also any reasonably priced L5 Pro models were incurring 8 week lead time. also they came with 3060, high TGP but lower resell value etc.

            so they didn't make it.

otherwise they beat pretty much everything else, just don't offer what I want

            • @shabaka: Thanks - I agree with you that anything over FHD on most laptop screen is an overkill.

        • You say also way to much… also, you have not mentioned Lenovo, their Legion laptops are sold AF for build.

          • +1

            @Madkant: see my response above

L5P is very solid yes but doesn't match what I need so I didn't get one

        • I thought I was the only one felt quality of Dell XPS serials went downhills. My very fist XPS was a L502X, which is still good in general except the heat sink is a little bit aged and the battery and speakers worn out. Not to mention the battery, I am not surprised by the speakers at all as I used them very heavily until recent a couple of years. I'm not sure about the heat sink though, it might not be the heat sink aged but rather than Windows 10 put too much load onto it as after I installed Linux on it, it now becomes very very cool, and the fan hardly spins up at all. The second one was a 9XXX, cannot really remember the exact model since it was a working machine and I mainly use the workstation. I really used it a dozen of hours and it would not power up after I shut it down. Eventually the mainboard had to be replaced. Quite a few of other colleagues had exactly the same problem. The most staggering issue was the case was not even even. That was the very first time I saw that in a laptop.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: yep, I also had a top of the range xps 15 which went downhill quite quickly. battery expanded, speakers were loose, and like you mentioned it would wobble a little on the desk as it wasn't strictly flat..

but I have been saying this for a couple years now, XPS is to be avoided. dell has gotta revamp this series, too many issues

            • @shabaka: what would you suggest as a business/productivity-class laptop instead of the Dell XPS?

              • +1

@paragon: at the moment E14 gen3 is the best (Lenovo)

a notch higher are L14, T14, or X1, but check that L14 has a proper screen, same goes for T14

nothing else really has the shiny silver design though, except for MacBook

        • And here I was thinking about buying a lowly Dell…..Inspiron 5415 this week on clearance (special). This hasn't filled me with any confidence!! Although the specs of the unit I'm looking at seem better than any equivalent laptop at the price or lower. (There's always something better for $100 more.) You've got me reconsidering Acer now, after having been scared off by comments mostly on this forum!

          • +2

            @Charlie Dont Surf: https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/inspiron-14-5415-laptop_users-…

sadly, 5415 comes with a low grade screen. 250nit, 45% NTSC

Acer recommendation is for gaming laptops. Dell has been a flop in gaming department in the recent years

my present "go to" suggestion for everyday laptop is Lenovo E14 gen3, around $1100 on Lenovo I think

good screen, best keyboard, solid serviceability. will last and last

            • @shabaka: Thanks for the feedback.

            • @shabaka: Mind if I ask for any recommendations on a photo editing laptop?

Ideally 14-15inches, expandable ram and ideally 2xssd ports. I use a lot of the Topaz AI software, which can get pretty heavy and bog the machine down. Decent battery and not too heavy would be awesome.

              Thanks!

              • @wittyusername: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/684993

these guys are a very good option, look around for a good price. calibrated OLED panels seal the deal

although I can't remember if they have 2nd SSD slot, they should in this form factor. haven't gutted one

alternatively JW stock refurbished Gigabyte Aero with OLED panels, they are very solid, too. or buy new, not sure about your budget. right now all refurb are gone, wait for another batch

there's also Lenovo Yoga options Slim 7 pro, for an OLED panel in 14" form factor you're looking at $2k before cashback

            • @shabaka: Incidentally, that Dell Inspiron is sub $900 (closer to $800 with cashback), so that's the price-point I'm comparing laptops at! There's definitely always something better on offer for $200-$300 more!

              • @Charlie Dont Surf: the market is tricky, all the stuff under $1k is usually unusable crap, especially if you go retail.

for $200-$300 more you can get things that will work so much better and last longer. that's the world we live in. by cutting too many corners you can get something so basic and struggle with it

but your choice in the end really

    • It is 80W.

    • Funny enough, I checked with the Dell live chat advisor too. But I mentioned specifically that I am wanting to know this about 3070ti

      I was told 125W.

      • +1

I was also told 125W by Merlin from Dell live chat.

        • I ordered, expected delivery of 12th April.

  • +2

This looks dope. ddr5 ram too.

  • +2

Beware of this gen G15, if I remember correctly there is no additional M.2 slot other than the built-in one, so if you want more storage the only option is to upgrade from 512 to 1TB when purchase

    • true. service manual does say that there is just one NVMe slot (occupied)

can be M2.2230, too, and might need a bracket to upgrade 2230 -> 2280

      says so in the manual

Dell, how low can you go? outrageous

Alienware m15 R5/R6 at least there were 2 NVMe slots, still need a bracket though. finding the right part number is a circus

      • Is the RAM upgradeable?

        • +1

          yup. 2 ddr5 sodimm slots

      • Err, if the socket was 2280, it would be fine if you got a 2230. But if it was a 2230, I doubt there would be enough space for you to put in a 2280.

And also Dell charges too much for the parts. I remember when I upgraded the RAM on my L502X, the genuine Samsung sticks were only about half of the Dell price tag and what I got were actually exactly the same model according to SPD. Not sure if it is still the case, but based on the findings, It might be worse.

        • all of the sockets on the current chassis allow 2280 to be installed physically, but there's no screw hole in the chassis itself. instead there's space for a special bracket that slides into the chassis in a specific manner, that's what holds SSD into place

so if you've got a 2230 in there, and are installing 2280, you're gonna need a different bracket. and if you've got a spare M2 slot it will come without any bracket and you'll need to procure one. which is quite a task.

          • @shabaka: Okay, that's just low. I thought there was simply no space.

      • If you bought the m15 r5/r6 after a certain date. They give the extra bracket in the box. I grabbed the r6 during the last sale, and the 2nd bracket was included. Thought i was lucky, but searched online and found out that dell have been including the extra brackets in the box i think starting mid-late last year.

        • lucky! thanks for letting me know, this is good news.

gosh, how stupid can they be not to do it from the start!

          • @shabaka: Yeah, i guess they got tired of people asking for that bracket. Hope they do this for their other laptops too.

    • When I do, it changes all the specs to a computer I don’t want. Hmm…

  • Good deal.

  • +1

good to mention that keyboard is single zone backlit

for a few bucks upgrades to 4 zone

    • Yah because the flashy lights will help win games.

  • detailed specs

has details on storage and keyboard and everything

  • Only 512gb of storage, rather stingy for a laptop above 2k.

  • 1 SSD Slot is pretty poor form for a big laptop

  • Wish qhd and 17" at this price

  • How do you find out about the wattage of the GPU? I've recently realised how important that is (eg 80 vs 130) and am disappointed by the deceptive practice of not displaying that anywhere by a lot of manufacturers.

    • 130W for this model

      • Where do you see it is 130W? I couldn’t find any where.

      • +2

Just chatted with Dell agent and they confirmed the GPU on this model is 80W.

        • +2

It was based on a Chinese review of the same video on YouTube . I've just contacted live assistant too but got an answer of 90w. Sorry for confusion

        • I chatted too, was told 125W. Did you ask specifically for 3070TI

          • @rake: I gave them the 3070 TI variant link.

    • +1

Thanks for looking into it guys, makes this not really a deal IMO given big chassis and heavy weight. Basically suggests poor thermal design / management.

  • -3

Price could be reduce to $2,124 if anyone want to try.

    Could be error.

First click on QHD screen option, price will change to $2,999.
Then click back to FHD option, price will reduce to $2,124.

    • +1

No, check carefully if Video Card is still 3070Ti.

    • The problem is when you click back to FHD, it changes the graphic card to 3050 instead of 3070 … :)

  • +1

Got this today, can confirm a TDP of 140w on the one I ordered.
