"High quality PU leather". Isn't plastic simply plastic?

    • +11

You are right PU leather is an imitation of the real leather made of polyurethane, a plastic with a similar feel and aspect to the leather

      • +23

Except it doesn't breath, self-heal or wear nicely like leather.

It sweats, marks easily and flakes off after a few years.

        • +11

if it lasts a few years for $15.99, then you've got good use out of it

          • @ltwo: I agree, it's still decent value! But it's disposable.

        • +13

Leather stopped breathing when it was slaughtered ;)

My favourite marketing term is "vegan leather'. Bloody genius IMHO!

      • Mine is carbon neutral

      • The worst part is that actual vegan leather (made from pineapple leaves) doesn't have a different name, so you're 99% going to get this horrible flaky crap.

  • +2

Good price for a 80x40, but seems to have been that price forever.
I've got a neoprene one, but it attracts marks.

    • +2

skid marks? Driving your mouse too fast?

  • +3

Can this be claimed from ATO for WFH purposes?

    • +3

      Sure can!

      • +3

not if you use the shortcut method for deductions

    • The portion used for work purposes can

  • Brown and pink also $15.99

  • +5

I had one of these and returned it.
Using your mouse on it is not nice, it adds SO much friction compared to a normal mouse mat or even just your desk (depending on material).

    • I suppose it depends on the mouse as well. My gaming Logitech one swishes about nicely on almost any surface, my cheap office logitech one struggles on most things.

      • +1

Possibly, I used an MX Master 3 on it, but didn't pull out my gaming one and try it.

  • I got one of these in black/reddish a few months ago to sit on my new desk. I put my keyboard, mouse and wrist pad on it mostly. It holds up ok. Not real leather, this thing is not built to last but a few months in, it has held up well. $15.99 is about the most I would ever pay for this. I think there are difference sizes, the one I got is pretty big - around the same size as a 28 inch monitor. Good thing is, once you wreck one side, you can flip it over and destroy the other :)

    • Out of curiosity, how does it hold with sweat during hot days? Is it sticky?

      • Yeah its sticky like everything on my desk

      • It’s a glossy fake leather so you can just wipe it off. Can’t speak for durability… that may affect the material over time but bit of fluid is no problem, I’ve spilt some tea on it and it wiped off with no sign of damage.

  • Anyone recommend a genuine leather one?

I use an trackball mouse so it doesn't move (mx ergo)

    • I am using this one for a while, happy with it, double the price though. How much better? I don't know.

      • Looks to also be 'vegan leather', but perhaps a higher quality variant. I'm also looking for a real leather option for a desk pad.

        • +3

Most "real leather" you're likely to find is going to be what is known as "bicast leather". This is low-quality split leather covered with the same polyurethane coating as "PU leather".

An increasing proportion of "genuine leather" products sold in Australia (e.g. phone cases, wallets, belts, bags, upholstery) are manufactured in this way, because it's cheaper, looks like high-grade leather, and (unlike the UK and New Zealand), we don't have any laws prohibiting this misrepresentation. It's really hard to know whether a leather product is bicast or not unless you can actually get your hands on it and examine it closely.

Bicast leather peels and degrades just like PU leather. It may be a little more hard-wearing (as the split leather underneath is reasonably tough when coated), but once it starts to peel, it's as useless as any "PU leather" product. You're left with patches of ugly, fibrous, flaky split leather

So, even if you do find a "real" leather variant, your best bet is to find a UK or New Zealand listing for the same product, and see whether they make the same claim there (although that's not a 100% guarantee - just because misrepresentations aren't allowed there that doesn't mean they don't happen).

Frankly, if you want a super-hard-wearing desk mat, you're probably best going with floor-grade linoleum or vinyl. If it can handle high-heel shoes, it can probably handle anything you're likely to do with it on your desk, and I imagine it's going to last a very long time.

  • These are great! Amazing price

Cut it in half lengthwise and flip one piece over to make a ukraine flag for your desk

    • -3

Why the downvotes? I was literally just pointing out that you could turn this into a Ukraine flag desktop since it's blue and yellow

Edit: unless it was because I said "cut in half"? That was not my intention btw

  • Any 90x40 option?

  • +1

Grabbed one. Looking forward to attracting marks and it flaking in a few years. Whatever.

Godammit, every day Amazon gets richer and I get poorer 😂

  • I've got one on my desk at work. Signing documents is now much nicer than the bare wood and I like the non slip aspect so my keyboard doesn't slide around. I've only ever used it with navy showing… Not game enough for mustard yet!

  • I have this one. It looks great and the qulaity is great, but it can be eaily moved around the desktop (the rubber one this replaced had no such slippery isssues.

    • I think they have a note that
      - No Suede Base: The dual-sided design has no anti-slip suede base, to allow using both sides. If extra slip-resistant is required, consider the single-sided option with a suede base.

    • I just put some anti-slip shelf liner underneath my double-sided one (the grippy rubber stuff you get in a big roll).

Not only does it stop slipping, it adds some cushioning that is actually really comfortable when resting my arms on the desk.

  • +1

I got one last time to keep my PC on it and has been great so far.

  • Good Price but I prefer no logo on my desk mat

  • Am i clicking the wrong link? Cant find navy and mustard, and all of the other colours are $19.99

    • Mustard one is OOS
I prefer brown one though for the same price, even though it's not reversible.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0992H4Q85

    • It seems the navy and mustard run out of stock. They have Brown and Pink though

  • Will be refunding. Just isn't nice, mouse barely moves and it doesn't stick to the desk

    • +1

Change your mouse and desk, maybe?
