  • Continental GatorSkin Tyres 25c (Pair)

    25 cents seems cheap.

Is there anything wrong with them?

    • +7

      They don't come with pedals

    • If you want the black one's they are 700c..

  • I currently use the 32c pair and had 28c before that… I have not had a single puncture in over 3 years of using the tyres - definitely recommend gatorskins for commuting.

    • Fully agree, I used these tyres for commuting for several years and I highly recommend them.

    • I used to train on the tubular version. Regularly wore them down to canvas.

That's a good use for farming crocodiles.

  • Vouching for these little croccies!

  • Same price and delivery fee from Wiggle.com.au

    • +4

      Same owners as well

      • +1

Not just the owners, same shop just 2 websites. Though when I bought a frame, shipping was far cheaper on one of them for some reason.

      • If only we still had them as competitors. CRC was normally cheaper when they were. But the dearer wiggle buys out a competitor so prices go up.

        • also just bought out 50% of bikebug

    • Any deal on the 38c??
    • 28c same price at Wiggle

      • +1

        What about 38c?

  • +3

These can be quite slippery in wet weather.

  • These are hard to put in with plastic tyre levers. Any tips?

  • any way to get free shipping?

  • $84.69 with free postage on ebay on the 28C's, no?

    • Or is that the price for a single tyre? Do they even sell tyres individually or is it always assumed a pair unless stated otherwise?

      • +1

That's the price for 1 tyre. It is more common to sell individually but there are double packs also available.

        • Copy that, cheers.

  • Don't rate them, especially this narrow. Slippery when wet and bizarrely puncture prone. Might just have been a run of bad luck or a bad batch. I've heard better things about the wider 32c. Wider tires in general seem less susceptible to flats.

    • +1

I've had them in 28s on several bikes, while I didn't mind them I can attest to their occasional slipperiness and while I wouldn't call them puncture prone, they certainly aren't puncture proof and had a reasonable enough number of punctures to switch. After advice from bike mechanic, who has a much larger survey size than me, I've switched to Schwalbe Marathons 32mm for commuting and have fond them puncture proof. Heavier and presumably a little slower, but haven't had to change a tube.

I run the insanely named schwalbe evolution marathon supremes in as wide as they fit, I think 42c. More than once I've had zero punctures for their entire life. Other times not so lucky.

It'd be interesting to know how much is the anti puncture stuff and how much is the extra width allowing lower pressure and just being able to roll over things that might flat a narrow one.

        • Yes I think the lowerpressure and extra width would make a difference, but combined with the stickier compound of the schwalbes and the puncture proofing it's a great range of tyre.

I'd love to try the evolution. I beleive their rolling resistance is very low. But I've stuck with basic marathons for now as they can easily be found for $33 or so a tyre.

          • @huggsymersh: Where are you finding the marathons for $33 a tyre, out of interest?

            • @doddles: From bike bug. But note, these are the original marathons, not the plus, racer or any other of the hundreds of variations they seem to have! And it does depend on which width you go for. Seems that price varies quite a bit based on width/popular sizes

I think I bought a couple of 35s about a year ago and they came to $35 each. But prices seem to have changed a bit.

  • I don't know a thing about bike tyres but I sent the deal link to a guy I know who rides, with the question; These any good and is it a good price? He replied no and sent me this link.

      That's for 1 tyre not 2

  • Commute daily on a bike and I had 1 puncture after like 6 months with my stock giant tyres so decided to replace with these to give them a try. To date I had about 1 puncture a month with these and happened to both front and back. Bad luck? Or the product is just not as puncture proof as advertised? Decided to go back to my stock giant tyres.

    • I'd say bad luck. I used to get a puncture every two weeks (just riding on the weekends) on my roadbike with Continental GP 4000 SII tyres. Swapped to Gatorskins and never got a puncture but hated how rough the ride was on them. Ended up turfing them after a few months and went to Maxxis High Roads which were absolutely amazing and over the past 2 years, I've only had a couple of punctures. I briefly swapped to Continental GP 5000 tyres and got a puncture the second and third ride out and then had a larger cut open up on a tyre so I went back to High Roads. I've got some Pirelli P Zero Velo tyres to try out now.

I’m trying out schwalbe marathon plus now that claims maximum protection against puncture. Let’s see how that goes.

  • Kill Crocs to give tyres to the road toads, seems legit

  • Great tyres & price there, get 28mm if your frame will fit. Extremely long lasting and puncture resistant.
I went from these to other brands for a couple of seasons thinking I'd do better on the puncture resistance and longevity front then eventually came to my senses and went back to Gatorskins. For long distance cycling or commuter they're hard to beat.
