Before other people commented based on youTube leaks (basically, not confirmed):

M2 will be announced soon. But then again, there is endless supply of what Apple will release next from youTubers. They just want you to click on those videos.

And, there are also ones like: I (the youTuber) decided to return a 14 inch M1 Macbook Pro 16GB RAM. The actual reason is that he wants a 32GB RAM one. Or those 16 inch was not needed months ago and now they are wrong, they now like 16 inch MBPs.

    • -5

What are you doing that needs more than 8GB of RAM, Adobe software?

      • +1

You need to ask those youTubers. Those youTube clickbait titles have things like "I decided to return 14 inch M1 Pro Macbook Pro". A lot of those basically are returning them to get either a model with more RAM or a better model.

Bottom line: clickbaits and showing off (they are getting a better, more expensive model).

      • I have a photos library with 75000 photos and 4000 videos. With 8gb when trying to sync to my iPad all theses, which equaa as to 780gb of storage, with 8gb the bacbook pro crashes. It works fine with 16gb.

      • +7

16GB should be the minimum these days as standard issued laptops at work are 16GB…

        • -2

Cos what your work does is the standard everyone should aspire to.

          • +1

@dangerdanger: not just at my current workplace… its at many workplace really… there is a reason 16GB is minimum… maybe its just windows but heck running Chrome and various webapps (cause a lot of apps these days are through the browser) just for basic work requires more than 8GB. Maybe not 16GB fully but 8GB is definitely pushing it these days…

        • The ARM Macs treat RAM very differently apparently. For most people 8GB is all they will need on a Mac. I have an 8GB Mac and even with a couple of Adobe apps open at the same time it's enough. It's only when I want all the Adobe apps open plus everything else that I run into trouble.

          • @AustriaBargain: If you really want to do some proper work efficiently, you need to start with 16GB. Work provides me with a Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM and it is not enough. I am not running any Adobe app. I do need to open a few apps and multiple projects at the same time.

The ARM Macs treat RAM very differently apparently

Let me guess, that is based on youTube videos last year? Funny a lot of youTubers are no longer saying that nowadays. Honestly, that statement (the ARM Macs treat RAM very differently apparently) is pure youTube clickbait and trying to keep Apple users happy. ARM is RISC based architecture. It's not something completely new. I most certainly do not see 200% improvement in RAM management / usage between M1 vs Intel Macs.

Didn't neg any of your comments (I don't get why people like to neg comments so much). Anyway, the recommendation is still the same, M1 or not, get sufficient RAM and try not to save the cost there. The computer architecture fundamentals remain the same. Those BS, sequential read/write speed from PCIe gen 4 SSDs cannot substitute RAM. There is no contest in terms of random read/write between RAM vs even the best SSD today.

            • @netsurfer: It's based off me comparing my 8GB M1 MBP to my 32GB Ryzen gaming PC, which I use both for the big three Adobe apps plus After Effects, often all open at the same time on top of my browsers and other apps. I experienced the Adobe apps before and after they went native too, for those that are native now. Mind I'm not doing long projects with After Effects, they are all 30 second or less Facebook ad style videos.

              • @AustriaBargain: If you can demonstrate same type of apps, with large files, in applications where memory plays a key part, and M1 performs close to 4X better, then you are more than welcome to show that.

It needs to be an objective comparison. I have an M1 device and I don't find it to be as amazing as some youTubers hyped them up to be. Apple did hold M1 back (for M1 Pro and M1 Max).

                • @netsurfer: In my experience I would say a bit over 2x better, not 4x better. I only said I have 32GB compared to 8GB because I happen to have 32GB in the PC. I would have gone for 16GB but I didn't ever want to runt out of ram, I really do like to leave all kinds of things open for weeks at a time. I like to think about an After Effects projects for a week at a time without ever closing it, while also having linked Illustrator and Photoshop files open. I also have about 1.5TB of very fast C drive SSD devoted to Adobe scratch disk and cache, and I keep all project files on a cheaper 1TB drive that is synced to the cloud.

                  • @AustriaBargain: If your test condition was not RAM limited, then are you really testing it objectively? Other people have already pointed out cases where we know this "treat RAM very differently" isn't true.

Apple knows this so the M1 lineup, RAM wise, is following x86 based lineup standard. Also, for the developers, we know clearly not to buy into those youTubers' BS.

If having 1.5TB primary SSD is something that's important, then you would opt for a M1 with 2TB SSD. If so, I really don't see why you would want to go 8GB RAM + 2TB SSD combo. I get the impressive CPU / performance per won't benefit of M1. However, storage, especially external, is a weak spot of M1. Given Apple held back M1 on the memory speed side (compared to M1 Pro and M1 Max) and how RAM works, honestly, it doesn't make sense it is the RAM that is making the difference.

Most mainstream youTubers moved to M1 Max already (more RAM being a reason). It's better to move on to 16GB RAM minimum (ideally more) if possible as I do consider M1 being something that you would use for work, not just some light usage.

                    • @netsurfer: I opted for this M1 because I wanted a "for now" Mac, and upgrade to the M3 Pro later or whatever. I got it before the other ARM Macs were announced. The fact that even with limited RAM and storage space that the M1 Mac outperforms my Ryzen 32GB is even more impressive, at least until it runs out of RAM and storage space because After Effects has 100GB of cache from every project file so far.

      • Using virtual machines will require more RAM. And to futureproof the device.

M1 + 8GB Unified RAM is actually miles ahead of anything else in this price range.
Combine that with the colour accurate screen and the fact that apples components are all high grade (using a 7yr old iMac 5K now) it will literally last you for a decade.

This is what PC fans don't understand about Apple, on paper it looks bad, in reality it is actually much better value then anything you can buy including DIY builds.

Apparently the one coming out on March 6 may be a 27 inch iMac with pro specs similar to that of the 14" and 16" Macbook Pro. So if you really wanted to get a M1 powered desktop this is not a bad price at all. I really highly doubt Apple will be releasing a M2 24" iMac because these M1 24" iMacs are still quite new in the product cycle.

Just note that this is the 7 core base version that only has 2 USB-C ports at the back, the keyboard doesn't have touchID, and the charging adaptor doesn't have the built-in gigabit internet port.

Let's wait for the actual event. So many clickbaits and rendering of certain devices which currently feel too good to be true.

I moved from a 2019 16 inch i7 16 gb mbp to one of these with 8 cores and 16gb ram. Very happy with the new machine. The previous mbp was the worst computer I ever had.

    • why was it the worst?

      • +4

The fans man. Honestly, calling them loud would be an understatement. And it struggled with Lightroom. I posted it in another forum that my subjective view was that it was worse than my 2010 iMac that had 12gb ram and an ssd. People didn’t like my statement. But I honestly think it was the worst piece of tech I’ve had. I think the thermals may have something to do with it.

        • I don’t know that my Intel 16-inch (i9, 32GB RAM, 5500M 8GB) was the worst Mac I’ve owned (that’s probably my 2016 where ports/keyboard/screen all suffered issues), but totally agree with you on the fans.

Didn’t matter what I was doing, the fans were always going crazy and the thing ran so hot.

Ditched it for a loaded 2021 16-inch (M1 Max, 64GB, 32-core GPU, 4TB SSD) and couldn’t be happier. Runs silent 99% of the time (the other 1% is soft fan during longer, heavy video exports), and for most of my video workflows is faster than my 2019 16-core Mac Pro with the W5700X, to the point where I have sold the MP.

          • @Mitch889: If The fans on my M1 rarely come on -and are not too loud when they do - I can only imagine how good the new mbps would be. Especially if it is fully maxed out.

          • @Mitch889: That's what I'm running for work now, and it's a pain. If it wasn't provided by work I'd return it.
Its insanely hot and thermal throttles so quickly making it feel soooo slow.

          • @Mitch889: Not just 16 inches, my 13 inches is the same. full speed fans. all my 4 MacBooks have issues. Fans, screen, Keyboard, touchpad, waste lots of time to fix them.

  • Is this the kind of thing officeworks will price beat?

And what advantages would this have over a macbook air? On paper they should be same spec?

I'm looking to enter the mac range to do some basic photo/video editing.

    • You can try, they might. Otherwise grab Amazon giftcards from ShopBack (2%) or Suncorp Rewards (3%) and you’d get close to the 5% price beat.

This is just for people looking for a desktop all-in-one type of computer. If you need a laptop then this is obviously not for you.

M1 MacBook Air will run you roughly 1.3-4k, you get a portable package but crappier screen, outdated design, and no fans.

This M1 iMac is roughly 1.5-6k, you lose the portability, but you get a very nice 4.5k display, a separate keyboard and mouse, one fan, and it’s a much newer design.

Performance wise go look at some YouTube videos, I’m not sure but I would guess the iMac can outperform the MBA because of the fan.

      • You can add some thermal pads onto the Macbook air chip and it will use the bottom case as heat dissipation, results in the same speeds as a Macbook Pro with complete silence :)

@caviar, Mac mini ? Via education store plus will get airpods

It's cheaper option to try and if you already have decent monitor, can save money there

    • Cheers. I've got a half decent desktop setup, with dual 2k monitors, just after something that will be easy to play around with video edits

      • Personally would say Mac mini will works for you (16gb ram).

There are some videos talking about iMac vs Mac mini (cost saving perspective and technical comparison). Mac mini was suggested.

I also bought Mac mini, happy with it

  • +2

    I got the Mac mini (under $900) + 27" Dell 4K monitor ($360) = around $1250.
If you don't have not having mac mouse and keyboard, the mini is a cheaper option.

    • Geekbench scores are not very far off , so yes that is indeed the best buy IMO too

  • Purchased! Thanks OP. I’ve been following the new redesigned iMac reviews since it was released but never had a chance to see one in the flesh because all the stores had taken them off the floor due to Covid.

I stopped at JB a couple of days ago and they’ve finally got display models on the floor. The screen is gorgeous!
