  • but does Ryzen 5 5600G support PCIe Gen 4?

    • +3

      Nope.

      • What is the lowest entry level AMD Ryzen CPU that supports PCIe Gen 4.0

        • AMD Ryzen™ 3 3100 Desktop Processor

The APUs, maybe due to the use of Vega GPU, is limited to PCIe gen 3 for some reason. Really don't know why AMD is doing that, introduced PCIe gen 4, but withheld it on lower end chipsets and mobile CPUs and APUs. Now that Intel even put in PCIe gen 4 support on its cheapest B series chipset for 12th gen, AMD will follow.

Both camps still love to choke lower end chipsets. Intel blocking PCIe gen 5 and AMD blocking PCIe gen 4.

    980 pro 2tb without heatsink $386.1:
    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-980-pro-2tb-7…

I think it is the lowest price now.

    • +1

Damn! Bought mine from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/667322

And thought I had it very good already…

      • -4

That wasnt really a deal, prices are coming down for ssds.

        • +10

OzBargainists, turning making people feel bad about their previous purchases into an art form.

        • +2

It was for November. That's three months ago dude.

    • Nice find

      • Samsung usually had promo around this time last year, may be worth waiting?

        https://www.samsung.com/au/offer/ssd-cashback-2021/

        • +6

They are cheapening out now, giving you free games instead. Last year's Steam credit was not bad. But now Rainbox 6 Extraction is just pitiful, given that it is on Game Pass since Day 1.

I doubt you will see another cashback deal from Samsung. I hope I am proven wrong.

    • +8

Watch out with the 980 Pro, Samsung has just changed the components but kept the same product name: https://i.imgur.com/YJShyLR.jpg

    • they put the price up from 429 to 449 lol…

  • +1

Oh damn, just a few dollars away from <$400 for a 7000MB/s 2TB. Didn't someone say SSD prices are going to go up in the near future?

    • If you don't need a heatsink: https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-980-pro-2tb-7…

Also, people don't buy Gen4 SSDs for mining.

      • +1

Yes, I saw that link above but I need it as I'll be using it for the PS5. I've heard people say that there's some sort of shortage which will cause SSD prices to go up.

      • my old mother board has Gen 3 M.2 slot. should I buy Gen3 ssd? or still Gen4 better?

        • +1

970 Evo plus should be good enough.

        • +2

970 Evo Plus recently got a controller upgrade (which boosts the SLC cache performance), but had a NAND downgrade.

You cannot really benefit from 980 Pro, unless you really trick your brain to think that you will be writing a lot of large data and you want good sustained write speed after SLC cache is depleted. For a 2TB, whether that's worth $90, you decide.

        • +2

If your motherboard doesn't support Gen 4 M2 slot, no point putting a Gen 4 SSD in it.

  • This is great price for a 2tb, bought mine for $324 1tb in JB.

    • JB is higher than most computer stores…

      • Yeah that's true, I've used my JB gift cards that's why I bought it there.

        • Just as a reference point, how long ago was this?

  • +1

970 evo plus is $260 delivered

    • I think there is $12 delivery fee on the final checkout. I can't seem to get the free delivery.

      • oh i just bought one yesterday and i got free delivery. i did buy other stuff though.

        • Oh yeah if you add any crucial stuff, cpu or gpu, you get the free delivery offer. Thanks!

  • +3

Prices going down like a shark in wholesale market, wait for couple of weeks, International EOFY sale, should hit $350 or so after cashback for 980 Pro 2TB with heatsink

Only if all Ozbargain had access to Distributor prices like Ingram Micro, Redington, etc

  • Tempting! Wondering should I pull the trigger now or wait a bit longer if the price’s going sub $300 (non heat sink) in the next month or two. This is to upgrade from the Aorus 1TB PCIE4.

  • Oh boy that's a pretty good price for the 980 Pro.

  • What would be a Cheap motherboard with wifi to go along with 5600g

  • The 980 is coming up as $449.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    • 10% off at checkout

  • Great price on the ssd. Thinking if I should give up buying a hard drive and just run a 2tb ssd instead, haha.

    • Buy 3 of these, so you have an excuse to get a Z690 based system. Then, wait for PCIe gen 5 SSDs to become available.

PCIe gen 4 marketing trick really works. We know it is only sequential read/write and for write, once the SLC cache is used up, the write speed hasn't really improved that much and drops to a level that's at best PCIe gen 3. Random read/write received very little improvement. The IOPs improvement are from multi channels setup (which means you really need to go heavy multithread to benefit from it). We just cannot resist.

      • Instructions unclear, bought 3!

But on a serious note, I definitely don't need the speed limit pcie gen 4, and already have a 980 pro as boot drive. Just that hard drives has been expensive since chia and haven't found a really good deal yet for a higher capacity hard drive to use for storage. Getting a ssd for storage probably isn't ideal.

  • Not sure if the 980 pro is worth the extra postage cost ($15) over the P5 plus given that samsung likes to swap components around.

    • You think Crucial didn't? Sorry mate, you missed the news that Crucial did for P2. At least, when it comes to all these swaps, Samsung did put in a better controller in 970 Evo Plus, and actually in generally use, the new one is better. If you don't exhaust the SLC cache, due to the now larger dynamic turbo write (dynamic SLC cache), the new one is faster.

If you are after a PCIe gen 4 SSD now, do you really need to save that postage? If it is still too expensive, just wait. We all know it is an overkill for most of us anyway.

      • Think WD did too, also Kingston? its nearly easier to list the major vendors that haven't done it at this point.

      • Crucial hasn't swapped any parts that i'm aware of that aren't the ultra low end stuff. I'd argue they are probably one of if not the most stable in that regard. You would think samsung would be the same, given everything is done in house, guess not.

I'm mainly talking performance between the two models, if Samsung is changing shit then we don't know how it performs.

Its OZ bargain mate every dollar counts here :P You cant wait if you need the storage lol.

        • Um, honestly, they are all the same, but what Crucial did is actually worse than Samsung.

Crucial changed P2 from TLC to QLC. Samsung didn't do that. Furthermore, Samsung upgraded the controller (which makes 970 Evo Plus, in generally, runs better). The new controller is in the same class as 980. The fact that new batch of 970 Evo Plus 1TB has better sequential write than a lot of Phison E16 based PCIe gen 4 1TB SSD (even if that's SLC cache vs SLC cache) says something.

P2 is ultra low end? Sugarcoating it too much. Originally, one of the reasons for getting a P2 was that being a TLC SSD. With Samsung, at least you can tell new vs old with the packaging. You can decide whether you actually want the newer one (faster performance in most cases) or the older one (which has good sustained write after SLC cache runs out, but the SLC cache is rather small). Honestly, majority of people would prefer the new one (and it is cheaper).

With 970 Evo Plus, the new batch runs better than what most of the reviews indicate (coz. those are from the old batch). For P2, you'd better hope the review sites updated it (or at least warn you). Those sites which did that lowered the score on P2 big time.

          • @netsurfer: P2 is ultra low end. Its their cheapest nvme drive. The Controller has be swapped on the 980 (see RedHab's comment in this thread) and we don't know the performance, this is the issue here. How about we talk about the products we are comparing?

            • @goig986: You wrote:

              Crucial hasn't swapped any parts

P2 is not ultra low end. A swap is a swap. You cannot evaluate a product AFTER the swap. Are you going to guarantee that Crucial will never do a swap ever again for any product faster than P2?

The Controller has be swapped on the 980 (see RedHab's comment in this thread)

Seriously? You want to go into this? Let's look at recent controller changes on SSDs shall we? The tendency tends to be using a newer controller and try to save up on the NAND. Wouldn't surprise me if Samsung changed to a better controller. One of the issue with 980 Pro is that it came out quite early. Think about it, Samsung is now using Elpis on 980 and 970 Evo Plus. Also, please quote the correct model, he was referring to 980 Pro.

Let's wait till we have tests done on the new 980 Pro. However, for P2, let's not play dumb. That was really dodgy. As I have mentioned, 970 Evo Plus (new batch) generally performs better than the older batch.

Samsung is putting PCIe gen 4 controllers on their PCIe gen 3 NVMe SSDs (maybe because they see no need to produce PCIe gen 3 controller chips anymore). Yes, Samsung did disable the PCIe gen 4 support on those PCIe gen 3 SSDs. However, that's still better than how WD is doing it for SN770. WD obviously plans to milk customers. SN750 SE might be short lived.

              • @netsurfer: Cutting a sentence in half to take it out of context doesn't achieve anything.

Its a fact that the Crucial P2 is their cheapest 1tb nvme looking at PC part picker. Everything in that price class is QLC anyway. Its their lowest end nvme drive.

Samsung is changing parts all over the product stack which is a bigger issue imo.

I'm not saying it wasn't dodgy but i'm referring to two sdds here today. the 980 pro and the P5 plus. Stop changing the topic.

Has the 980 pro been touched? yes.

Then my point stands " if Samsung is changing shit then we don't know how it performs."

You could excuse the 970 Evo plus https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsungs-chip-fabs-in-texa…

But to pull this shit again on their flagship product, no way.

        • Source:

          https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-p2-m-2-nvme-ssd

          OUR VERDICT:

Crucial has swapped out the P2's TLC flash for QLC flash in newer revisions of this product, but they carry the same name and model number. These new versions result in much lower performance in several key metrics. We recommend you look elsewhere for your next SSD.

It's unprofessional so Tom's hardware flat out tells you to forget P2. To be fair, WD is just as bad (if not worse). WD's whole SN550 mess and having the nerve to introduce SN570.

  • Thanks for this. This is exactly what I had been waiting for.

  • +1

FYI, there seems to be a fundamental issue with the SLC cache flushing algorithm used by the Samsung Pro 980 controller (even with the latest firmware version of 5B2QGXA7), resulting in significant performance degradation that is only recovered upon rebooting. IMO, the better purchase is the Western Digital Black SN850.

Is this 970evo plus needed to be updated ?
I have macbook airm1, planning to use this for ssd with an exclosure

    • +1

It would work out of box but Samsung Magician software (free from Samsung website) can be used to update the SSD Firmware. I use Windows for all my machines and it runs as a taskbar icon which pops up if an update is needed.

  • 980 pro out of stock. Wanted to snag one for the PS5.

  • Seagate BarraCuda Pro 12TB 7200 RPM 3.5" Internal Hard Drive for $341 (after 10% discount) + 1% CC + S&H is a good deal if you value 5 year local warranty and 2 years of Seagate Data Rescue Recovery Plan. It's a 5-year old model, but still OK, being CMR and Helium based 7200 drive. RRP is $699.
