Kogan doesn't ship… prepare for cancellation and disappointment
    Previous episode: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/583533

    • Chapter 17 part 5 Kogan cancellation moment

  • +1

So if purchased and it is a price error, do they just give credit rather than a full refund?

    • +14

      You get Kogan branded money

    • +7

what happened previously was, Kogan will refund the purchase price, but will keep the shipping fee themselves
I had to contact them again to chase and argue to get that shipping fee back

    • +3

      Rules of acquisition number 1
"Once you have their money… you never give it back."

      For you, read it as
Once they have your money… you never get it back.

  • +4

Would take a punt but just not worth having my money tied up with kogan waiting for a refund. Also note it’s not kogan directly but a third party. Too many kogan third party scam opportunities.

    • +9

Bro, imagine if I managed to get one…
I wouldn't even sell it, this is the phone I want.

      • +1

        That would be soooo cool

      • +2

The only phone I've been waiting to upgrade to from an old Note

      • +5

This is the phone I have. Honestly, wouldn't buy it if given a chance. No 5G in Australia, abysmal battery life (only saving grace is that I am always near a charger due to COVID). The camera is jazz and what not, but I am taking fewer pictures with this camera than I did with OnePlus 7T Pro (which had great macro capabilities, I love taking flower pictures).

Rather go for a well supported phone with good battery life.

All great features, probably SD888 the only let down of this phone.

        • Could you explain the no 5G part? Looking to buy.

          • @ASOT: It doesn't have our 5G bands I would assume. I've seen numerous people that have bought this phone be unable to get any 5G even after contacting the telco.

            • @MrFunSocks: How does one check? Guess it's a good idea to ring the telco before buying?

          • @ASOT: It has the bands but 5G isn't enabled by the phone companies in Australia because this phone doesn't sell in Australia. So no testing/ prep has been done. I was told I should contact the TSP, but haven't done so.

(he did get his money back at the end of the day)

  • +1

As I know phone review not good, only good camera.

    • +13

has sd card slot and headphone jack.

      • +2

no VOLTE and 5G access in AU.

        • +7

5g just eats battery, disabled it on my s21u.

as for volte, never really cared for it.

But for those considering, these two could be deal breakers. then again is it worth giving up for sd card and headphone jack on a modern flagship?

          • @zjz93: With phones having up to 1TB storage and further cloud storage as well as wireless earbuds I've never missed these features. Didn't see what the fuss was about keeping an adaptor on the edge of your wired headphones either.. what's an extra 5-10cm of cable?

            • +2

@decc0: I hate that adapters stick out so much when you can get angled 3.5mm plugs which sit so much closer to the phone. Also, if I damage the 3.5mm plug from heavy usage, no biggie, compared to damaging a USB-C connector.

Also cannot charge phone while listening with the earphones unless you purchase Another adapter.

              • -4

@endlesstrail: USB-C earbuds exist for those who constantly have grief with adaptors.

Also, if I damage the 3.5mm plug from heavy usage, no biggie, compared to damaging a USB-C connector.

That's honestly never happened to me but I guess people do abuse their phones.

cannot charge phone while listening with the earphones

Why you'd want to have more cords and limitation is beyond me. Either wireless charging or wireless earbuds can solve this though.

If none of those options work for you, just listen on a different device (laptop?) for like 20 mins because it's obvious if you're okay being tethered you're not constantly on the move.

                • +4

                  @decc0:

USB-C earbuds exist for those who constantly have grief with adaptors

Is that the excuse to buy more toys?

Why you'd want to have more cords and limitation is beyond me. Either wireless charging or wireless earbuds can solve this though.

Wireless charging is less efficient (and again, one more purchase to get wireless charging AND it is NOT 100% wireless, or, you want to get a solar power based?). Wireless earbuds… hm… I start to see a trend… just buy more accessories and use more electricity.

                  • -2

@netsurfer: No one is forcing you to buy them, but look at the market and tell me that it wasn't a successful upgrade people are happy with.

                    use more electricity.

Oh no! Not the extra 300mah that provides 15 hours of playback 😂 This phone has a 4500mah battery, meaning every time you charge this phone you could've charged wireless earbuds FIFTEEN TIMES.

I guess if you can't afford the cash to purchase accessories you might have to carefully monitor electricity costs too.

                    • +1

@decc0: USB-C isn't great. Other than it is reversible, it is a mess. Some Android phones support USB 3, a lot only supports USB 2, some support USB-C/alt-mode.

Also, since when do gaming headsets come with USB-C being standard?

Wireless earbuds, can I get $1 from you every time bluetooth glitches out? If you ended up losing the charging case, is it super easy to find an alternative? So many junk class wireless earbuds.

Stop twisting, wireless charging for "phones". I have phones which has USB-C but no wireless charging support.

There is no official Apple wireless charging pad for iPhones. Also, wireless charging pads aren't invisible. They take up space. Phone cases can also cause problems.

How often do I need to keep an eye on my wireless earbuds in terms of battery life. You need to watch out for battery life on earbuds and the case. Also, don't give me the BS that every earbud product has wireless charging being standard.

                      • @netsurfer: Sounds like a you problem tbh. I'll let you have this much needed opportunity to vent on first world problems though.

        • I turn 5G off as it's just power-hungry, I never find myself needing 5G for any app I use.
A shame it doesn't have VOLTE, however.

        • Could you explain this? Looking to buy

    • +1

Camera isn't even very good unless you like shooting in RAW and manually editing all of your photos, and even then they won't be as good as a Pixel or Galaxy or iPhone.

  • bought ! if it is canceled , let it cancel。

    Thanks OP

    • +6

Until you risk only getting a store credit and not a refund back!

      • +2

        chargeback in that case 🤷‍♂️

      • +3

Is that legal not refund back to original source of payment and only a credit note?

        • not legal. You have to offer the money back but they just try and make it sound like store credit only

      • +4

Kogan always gives you a choice for refund.

      • +1

AUD700 here, same seller… still a very good (error?) price

    • Very strange. Probably a pricing error. AU$700 for the 256Gb version, and I found a 512Gb version for $581. I don't think this is how the price of additional storage work. :p

      • Definitely seems like an error if the 512Gb is cheaper than 256Gb

  • Back in stock, showing low stock now

    • +1

      try adding it to cart

    • sold out already.

      • +1

Hate that the "add to cart" button is still visible and clickable when it's already sold out. :(

        • yeah annoying lol

  • wtf, so cheap

  • Something seems amiss…

  • Good price, missed

  • :( missed

  • +1

So the best camera phone in market? Or just hype

    • I dont think ive heard anyone call this the best camera. samsung and apple still have better offerings. I'd say its mostly because the extra programmable button and sd card for those who need it

    • +4

The camera hardware and manual control are really good, but apparently there is little to no (AI) post-processing. That used to be a good thing, especially for people who know what they are doing with a camera.

In other words, photos and videos won't look as good as Apple/Samsung/Pixel when you just point and shoot, because the software won't do any corrections - which is what most people want these days.

But when you edit your footage with proper software, this thing should shine.

      • I hate that post processing in my Samsung, makes it like a water colour drawing with loads of dots due to sharpening (specially in landscapes). I still like the photos I have taken with Sony Ericsson K850i, it is a shame that we don't get any phones with Xeon flash now.

    • Not for point-and-shoot.
      Requires tinkering.

    • -1

Nowhere near the best camera phone on the market, especially for point and shoot. One of the worst in that regard.

    • +1

Good comparison to see how far behind the competition the 1 iii is:

      https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=11102…

  • +4

Could be a bait and switch ploy for the Experia 10 III which is on (reasonable) special.

psychology goes: I can't get the high model for ridiculous cheap, but the entry one is a deal. Looks good for the price.

    • +1

Rings true, I missed the 512Gb so bought the the 256Gb for more.
      Expecting a cancellation.

    • Yep that's some big brain analysis. Had a look at Experia 10 iii and it seems pretty good. Competes with $400 Chinese phones with Sony branding

      • Main attractions with the 10 are OLED, water resistance and clean Android.
        Cameras are rather mediocre.

  • I want this phone.

  • +1

Damn, would've loved this. Looking for a phone with an amazing camera and this was a great price

    • +4

The Pixels, iPhones, and Galaxies released in the last few years all have better cameras than this, especially for point and shoot.

      • 100% agree with this. Owning the previous two (currently using One ii) but not the One iii, will say the camera on the Xperia One phones may be better, but unless you really know what your doing (which I don't), you're unlikely to be better off with these. The point and shoot on other cameras is miles better and occasionally the camera app itself bugs out and after taking a shot the camera tells you its not working :(.
Aside from this though the phone itself is quite nice and solid but should be noted the software update releases are typically quite delayed , Sony taking some time before pushing security updates and the like out.

        • +1

Yeah the only real way the camera on this is better is in terms of manual control. You get more control but you get worse image quality and things like HDR are fine detail are nowhere near as good as the others.

Here's a comparison for anyone wanting to have a look:

          https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=11102…

The Xperia 1 iii just can't compete with the others.

  • +1

Don't feel bad if you missed this, it was gone in under 10 mins.

    • +2

but i feel bad because I didn't get it within the 10 minute time slot.

  • Now, I'm impatiently waiting to see if it ships. How long before I get the news whether or not I got a new handy on the way?

    • you will get a kogan branded refund for use on kogan products using your kogan dollar refund.

  • +4

if Kogan digital store are these guys I'm a bit concerned https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/techrific-australi…

  • +2

It's not even Kogan, it's some marketplace seller. Y'all ready for your box of bricks?

  • +2

Just don't google Brus Australia ☹️

  • +1

Something seems sus about this as the Store is Techrific under the alias "Digital Store."
Techrific is pretty sketchy, so I'd stay away.
They even listed a oneplus 9 for around $399…

  • Ordered the 256gb model, but a bit concerned now after reading the comments..
Will see how things turn out.

  • My orders on the way

1 x Kogan Mobile SIM - Prepaid Starter Pack (Sim Only)

    This is going as expected…..

    • -2

mobile sim starter pack (sim only) doesn't equal a PHONE

  • +1

    my order got cancelled

    • Was it the 256Gb or 512Gb

  • +1

my order got cancelled too, no compensation at all.

    • You're kidding me right? They didnt mention anything about the money?

    • +1

Why would you get "compensation"? You're entitled to a refund, nothing more.

      • Oh right I misunderstood. Yeah just the refund would be fine. I would hate it if I have to fight to get my cash back instead of a store credit.

  • My order status is still "We're running slightly behind but you can expect to hear from us soon!" from the Dick Smith site. :(

    • And my order just got cancelled… :/

  • Another cancel here, guess we were right about it being a pricing error.

  • Anyone actually got the phone?

    • I don't think so, mine got cancelled. I did however get $10 of free credit with kogan so I spent it then cancelled my trial :)
