This is from Amazon UK, I would like to see how they fulfill the "Two-Year Rescue Services" in Australia :)
Also, my experiences with overseas Amazon shipped HDDs are poor, not much protection on the packaging…

I've bought quite a few hard drives over the years and never had a problems with their packaging.

External hard drives are normally packaged quite well in their own box and Amazon normally throw these boxes into their own Amazon box. I've also bought one internal hard drive from Seagate via Amazon US and it was sealed in an anti-static bag which was placed inside a zorb ball like enclosure. They then put it inside a firm cardboard box which itself was wrapped in plastic. It seemed pretty secure to me. I kept all the packaging as it may come in handy if I need to transport a hard drive in the future. Maybe because it was a higher end hard drive they went to that level of packaging.

    • This is an external drive that comes it its own box. That is then packaged insied another Amazon box.
And the "Two-Year Rescue Services" is from Seagate - it has nothing to do with Amazon. Seagate would do this via their inhouse services.

Good price, I paid $331 for 2 of them March 2021 (also Amazon UK)
Just grabbed another for my Synology

Yeah I was about to post the same thing as I picked mine up for the same price in March. Not the cheapest deal by any means, but not too bad.

16TB is usually an Exos drive inside, looks like the 14TB is usually an Ironwolf NAS Pro. Still a great price on either drive, but something to keep in mind for those who plan on shucking.

    • Are you saying that Exos > Ironwolf NAS Pro?

      • +1

        I would.

      • just wondering how about Exos and Ironwolf pro vs the WD HC520/HC550 those Helium ones in the Elements?

        • +1

From reports, WD HC550 is quieter than Exos

      • Exos is noisier ;)

I just had a 1y/o 16TB exos that I shucked from an expansion die a death of bad sectors.. I don't think there is much that makes one drive better than another these days, it is pure chance

      • +2

I'm not sure your one harddrive dying is a good indication of the entire drive market. The MTBF is 2.5m hours for the Exos x16 vs 1.2m hours for the Ironwolf Pro. On average the Exos should last longer even if the occasional one goes bad.

It's the downside of shucking a drive though, losing the warranty (in most cases, I've heard of Seagate honouring it anyway).

        • I was actually thinking of this last night and wondered if the drives which make it into these external HDD enclosures are binned based on known defects/issues… in which case whilst the sticker might indicate the model had a planned lifespan/MTBF rating of an Exos X16, since the end customer normally wouldn't ever see the label, there is no such expectations or warranty.

          • @jace88: Possibly, but I would have thought binning happens before you slap the label on it. These are labelled exactly the same, model number and all.

The more likely reason is simply that Seagate don't have any other 16TB drives. There's no such thing as a 16TB Barracuda, there's just the Ironwolf, Ironwolf Pro and Exos (and Skyhawk, but that's probably more expensive to make with the added capabilities). And the cost of making each additional drive is likely peanuts as opposed to setting up a new process to make "cheaper" drives just to stick in external shells.

Not if you explain in your warranty claim that it was removed for attempted data recovery. You won't have any issues.

    • The 14tb I got a year ago was an exo

  • Looks like it's back up to $412.54.

  • Unfortunately mine arrived as DOA and I had to do a return 8^(!
