The TS80P has been on my eBay watchlist for as long as I can remember.

They use to be ~$100 but has been fluctuating between $120~$140 since COVID started.

Pair the TS80P with a USB-C PD Power Bank (ie. Xiaomi ZMI QB815) and you have a portable Soldering Iron.

You can also purchase additional/different tips off Aliexpress for ~AU$35 each Delivered. Most common being the the TS-B02 (fine tip that comes with the Soldering Iron) and the TS-D25 (which is a fatter tip)

You should really look into the PineCil

      • Have also considered getting the PineCil but has always been out of stock (along with the tips) every time I've checked.

Also have a perfectly functional solder + hot air station at home, but just keeping an eye on a portable soldering iron for small job where I'm too lazy to set up the station.

        • For those jobs, i use gas.

          • @MasterScythe: Also consider butane soldering iron as an option, but prefer a power bank powered iron as I have heaps of powerbank from all the OzBargain deals…

    Innit!

  • Wow, can you really adequately heat up a soldering iron with an 18/30w usb charger?

Makes me wonder how much my phone is being heated up charging at those wattages

    • +1

well phone heat is just leftover from what goes into the battery, this thing has no battery

    • The TS80 is very efficient in heating, hits well above it's rated wattage. I've been very impressed with mine and there are reviews out there that also found the same.

      • Do you have the TS80 or the TS80P?

      • +1

The TS80 is very efficient in heating

Electric heating is always 100% efficient. Where else can the energy escape to?

        • It's more about efficient delivery of heat to the target. These irons to seem to punch somewhat above their weight in testing videos on YouTube

  • How does this compare to the TS100?

    • Curious too as I own one

      • I own the TS100 and for my use cases, it is amazing.

    • I just received mine a couple of weeks ago. Paid only for standard postage and it came far quicker than I expected. The Pinecil is fantastic! I bought the silicone lead and extra tips - such a bargain.

    • Soldering irons have operating systems now? I must be getting old…

Edit: Looks interesting. I wonder if there is a similar one with a built-in battery. A high drain 18650 should be sufficient to keep this hot for a few minutes.

      • People use XT60 connectors, and RC hobby batteries.

        • Thanks. True, one can also use a power bank with PD. I was thinking of something built into the case. I will order one of these when it's back in stock again.

          • @bio: Yerh I just use a PD pack or a 6s lipo
These pinecils can go to 60 or 80w way more staunch and you get both connectors

      • +1

Yep, you can even play Tetris on it.

Built in Battery would be sweet, a back of a napkin calculation gives about 10 minutes run time from an 18650, but I guess would affect ergonomics considerably, unless you have a thinner battery but then you sacrifice run time.

    • +1

+1 for the Pinecil, I got it for soldering keyboard switches/components and it's been great!

    • Yes, Pinecil is easily the best and cheapest I've ever had. Tip's are compatible, cheap and easy to find. It's an astonishing deal.

  • Less ompf, but has convenience of USB plug(PD USB power bank) instead of a DC socket.

PS + more expensive and rarer tips

  • Just bought the TS100, Cheers OP!

    $114.99 Delivered

    Showing $109.99 for me

The TS100 is also available from this seller for 76.99

    Showing $70.99

    • Yes, same because of my $5 ebayplus voucher.

  • It has its uses but not powerful enough for professional micro solderers I use mine when offsite jobs n need something portable.

  • So… this needs to be connected to a USB C cable…… I'd pay $20 for a 50W mains powered soldering iron then.

    • +1

Absolutely….Its so much easier just grabbing the honda generator and dragging it out where u need it rather than trying to lug a massive USB power bank around.

Seriously tho, if you have 240v available at all times where you want to use a soldering iron, these things are probably not worth it to you.. Surely these are more comparable to a butane powered soldering iron.

    • Someone mentioned a $25 alternative (pinecil) above which looks like the best of both worlds; cheap and versatile.
