the fine print says pre paid phones are network locked, but doesnt go into which carrier (confirmed, its telstra!) thanks ryang;)
could it be unlocked by software easily?

slim pickings for large screen budget android phones that 'may' be upgradeable to android 4.0 in the future
this phone being single core and only 512MB is a bummer, but the slide out game pad is its killer feature

some phone specs

this phone on offer here should be the 850mhz version (thanks oringal)

a different version of this phone (900mhz)in dick's catalogue has 'not recommended for telstra 3G from 31/8/12 or next G'
since that phone is not 850mhz and will be obsolete soon (if used on telstra network) as telstra are phasing out 2100mhz for phones. http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/coverage-networks/ne…

        • what do you mean by it doesn't lock three sim cards?

  • my 3 sim card working on this phone, but it is a microsim with adaptor which stuck in the phone right now and struggling to pull it out, so no chance to try optus sim yet.

    • when you try the optus sim pleaseeeee reply

finally pinched it out and tried Lycamobile,no problem at all, i guess OPTUS should be alright since this 2100mhz normally telstra doesnt lock it.

        • but do you havve any optus sim card to confirm that it actually works? thanks :)

    • exact same thing happened to me…i think the sim slot was ruined when it got pulled out, now when i put in the optus sim it gets completly stuck inside

About 8 left at Midland WA. Box cleared says its locked. I asked the girl in Telstra store and she claimed $150 to unlock which I know she just picked out of her head. She is so not on the light side and clearly had some bojangles up her arse the grumpy biatch.

150 to unlock .you sure? even iphones arn't that much

        • That's what I was told at the Telstra store though I reckon you could get a better deal if you spoke to the right person.

    • Haha. Bojangles.

    • Got one this morning at Moonee Ponds Kmart for 199 as price drop is effective at 19/4/2012 (2nd last one at 8:30am)… expected it to be locked to Telstra… pulled out of the box and chucked in a Virgin mobile sim and it worked… no unlock required… did a google search for R800A and it supports the network frequencies needed for G and 3G for Virgin and Optus
    • 8GB micro SD card was included
    • About games… Astro File manager… Google search (name).apk… Transfer to micro SD card and will be able to install apps and games for free through Astro as long as you can download the .apk

      R800a SPEC
UMTS HSPA 800 (Band VI), 850 (Band V), 1900 (Band II),
      2100 (Band I)
      GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900

      so it supports 2G optus
but not the important 900MHZ 3G (HSPA) freq, only 1900 which doesnt even guarantee good 3G speeds and coverage in sydney.

      • Fair point, I just ran the speedtest.net android app and I only got 2.5Mbps down and 1.55 up … not so great… this is on Woolies mobile in Sydney with 5 bars and H icon…

      • Agreed… after 2 days of using, noticed the instability of my 3g =(
but then its not that bad in the city, just around home its in and out all the time so i just stuck with my wifi at home

        -Edit
        Melbourne

  • will this work with red bull sim? (vodafone) - considering optus worked, this might as well be, but just to ensure before buying. Thanks

GUESS WHAT!!!! got the last one and it works with most sims cards! OPTUS sims are can 100 percent working . even though it says it is locked. it is actually unlocked from the inside. so happy :)

like I said b4, Telstra hardly to lock phones using 2100mhz frequency which rarely used by other carriers. For 200 bucks it is value for money definatelly.

    • Its selling for 299 at DSE and its under the unlocked phones area
Kmart - 199 … seems unlocked for most people
Swapped my Galaxy S for this and loving it =D

The one in DSC is american version ( 900/2100 MHZ ) which cannot be used after 01/09/12 since the termination of the 2100 mhz 3G networ although it is unlocked.

  • …you need I.D to buy prepaid phones now?
is that like over 18 Identification?
    Dammit.

  • No stock anywhere around Melbourne. :(

  • Bought one from the Fairfield Kmart in sydney, and checked my service info. It's not locked at all. :D

  • I bought one this morning from Greensborough, VIC K-Mart. I just rooted it, quite fast. At least faster than my old Wildfire S.'

    Great bargain.

  • I bought one from Marrickville. confirmed it works with Optus.

  • Anyone looking for one of these, mine is up for grabs. Too bulky for me, and I don't game much. I'm getting a Motorola Defy, to better suit my needs.

Still in perfect condition, going for $199. Email me if you're interested ryangus at gmail dot com.

  • got one a few days ago, but the power switch was broken. Had i swapped for another one. First one wasnt locked, But.. The new one is. :( it also came with firmware 2.3.4, instead of 2.3.3 in the earlier phone.

  • Thank you soooooooooooooooo much for posting this.

I was about to order one of these from Mobicity online for $399, when I saw this post while Googling for specs etc.
I thought that there would be no way I'd still get one being over a month past the post date, but amazingly when I called my local KMart they actually had one, still for $199. :)

I think there is still one there if anyone is interested. The Belmont store in Geelong, Vic.

    Cheers.
