Do not import any Xiaomi phones to Australia, at this stage.

There's no guarantee it will work after the 3G shutdown, as telcos need to selectively whitelist devices for use with our networks.

Buy from a local supplier for the best compatibility and ease of returns.

Read official statement from Xiaomi Australia's distributor
    https://xiaomitech.com.au/blogs/news/notice-on-3g-shutdown-a…

    As of 31 Oct 2024 -

As Australia’s 3G networks are being phased out, some Xiaomi Redmi and POCO users may experience connection issues on certain Australian mobile networks. This is not due to any compatibility issues with our devices for 4G or 5G networks. Instead, the disconnection results from new ACMA regulations effective October 28, 2024, requiring carriers to restrict devices that can’t support 000 emergency calls over 4G or 5G from accessing their networks.

As Xiaomi’s authorised distributor in Australia, we’ve ensured that all models we’ve brought into the country meet local regulatory and network requirements. Each of these products supports 000 emergency calls over 4G and 5G. We are working closely with Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone to update their whitelists to include all authorised Xiaomi models. Once this process is complete, customers will regain uninterrupted network access on local 4G and 5G networks.

If you purchased your Xiaomi device from one of our authorised retailers—including JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Amazon Australia (not including third-party sellers), Mobileciti, or directly from our website Xiaomitech.com.au—since December 2023, you can be assured your device meets these regulatory standards. Full connectivity will be restored as soon as the carriers complete their whitelist updates. In the meantime, you may try to contact your carrier to request unblocking of your device. If you prefer not to wait, or if your carrier is unable to assist, please reach out to your retailer for exchange or return options.

Yep, grey imports effectively banned here now. Livid

      • +11

pretty abysmal thing that went below everyone radar even something like Sony Xperia 10 vi is not functional here anymore

      • +12

Waiting for the pending royal commission. Grabs popcorn.

No one will lose their job though. Probably get promoted.

      • +1

My Xiaomi 14 bought overseas still works on Telstra network

    • Wondering if the 14C will get an AU release like the 13C did.

    • +1

So tourists from China coming to Australia and bringing their own phone wont be able to use it here with a local sim?

Wow. Way to promote tourism. Lol.

      • +1

Tourists have an exemption, is my understanding.

        • +2

Only roaming isn't it? Using a local SIM would have the same restrictions (how would the telco differentiate?)

          • @bamzero: There was discussion about it in another thread, and something about the ID being used to purchase the SIM. Look i dont really know myself but i think it went beyond roaming, or at least that was the view of people in the subject thread. They had a 90 day exemption or something i thought, even using a local SIM.

If they are the official Xiaomi they are a joke. The only phones they sell is the Poco F6 and the pro version. They sell a total of 23 products which are mainly accessories. I wouldn't trust anything from this website. If it indeed is legit, then Xiaomi needs to find someone else to front their official store.

      • maybe they sold more before it became clear they were all blacklisted?

    • +1

Sorry my rant for the day (or only one on ozbargain….)

If you go into the middle of australia where there is no cell service all 4G phones cant make an emergency call. Yet the ACMA doesnt ban all mobile phone and mandate sat phones…..

I have 2 Poco C65 (Redmi 13C) from Ali working fine on Boost Mobile.

  • +2

Xiaomi Redmi note 13 pro global version (bought in Europe from Amazon) working fine too.

  • +5

Imported Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro stopped working when I made a call on 30th Oct but I put the Sim in another phone for a few hours and when I put the Sim back in the Note 9 Pro phone the connection was restored. Still going now. Catch Connect in VIC.

    • Hmm, strange. I have the Redmi Note 8 and also on Catch Connect in VIC. I tried the same thing but it's not working.

    • No such luck here. Just tried my Catch SIM in the Redmi Note 9 Pro again, still blocked. IMEI 86243605.

      Your IMEI the same?

  • +5

Problem is there's no way on knowing in any PARTICULAR gray phone will work unless you have the IMEI to check on Telstra's white list. If its not on the list it WILL NOT WORK!

  • Why do we talk about phones in inches like they're dicks?

    • Umm since the switch to Plasma and LCDs screens and PAL/NTSC not really being relevant any more like it was with CRTs, TV models starting being manufactured for global markets. The US is the biggest market so packaging started using inches.

Is now just standard the screen measurements are in inches.

      • +1

The USA is also full of dicks. So standard measurements of them are also in inches.

    • Lol

    • Because everyone knows to compare it to dicks. But if you say your dick was 15cm no one would have a mental picture how long that is.

    • +4

Why do you think of measurements in inches as measurements for dicks?

  • +1

Really sucks if one grey import is whitelisted on one network but if you port to another network it isn't and is effectively banned.

  • +1

Xiaomi 12, Poco x3 pro, even Xiaomi A1 still works on Telstra network (boost). All purchased from Aliexpress.

Redmi 10 (2022) purchased from an overseas store works with Aldimobile (Telstra) but not Amaysim (Optus).

    • +1

Yeh for some reason Optus (both my Catch and Amaysim SIMs) has blocked my Poco X3 Pro but the IMEI is ok for Telstra according to their checker.

Thing is don't know if it's just an oversight and they'll blacklist eventually.

  • +5

The store knew of the issues before hand with compatibility and still has a rep post anyway.

As per scrimshaw's comment there's no guarantee this works.

  • anyone have recently bought mobile gadgets from aliexpress? Is it network connect? looks like the snapdragon-8 gen3 china-built chip processor is come to market at significant cheaper to many big players. Most descriptions mention compatible with 4G LTE. I can't be sure so wonder anyone have bought any and tested.

I can see some phone cost about $30 delivered. if they are work will happy to buy these over expensive local phones market. need burner phones now after the 2g/3g shut down. or am I missing anything from these cheap phones

  • Negging for issues as mentioned above by the mod. Too risky as there's a high risk this phone won't work in Aus.

  • Negging to highlight the above issues which I agree with
