  • Are hot KKs a thing? I would think the glaze would melt off

Fresh KK still warm are a religious experience

      • Will have to try and find them when the light is on I guess.

        • +1

Incase it isn’t obvious you can only see hot signs at the factory stores. There’s only 2 in Sydney, but I’m not sure where you’re from.

          • @ATangk: Any in BNE you know of?

            • +3

@knobbs: Redbank plains does hot ones but not cooked fresh. They only heat them up and put the glaze on. Not the same as the factory stores where they cook them fresh

They do the hot between 3-5 every day apparently but it's not consistent and they said to ring them on the day and check

IMO not having factory stores is a wasted opportunity. Obviously they have a factory somewhere in Queensland where they donuts are being made so why not make it a factory store where you can buy them fresh. The factory store is an experience IMO and if they had one here I would visit frequently. Right now I hardly ever have KK

@icanfly: Sydney boy living in QLD now. Redbank Plains is not the same experience and you gotta call in, last time I tried rocking up they said they had too many still in stock to do hot ones.

Fresh hot KK is an experience though.

            • @knobbs: Unfortunately I couldn't find any on the map. Theres 2 in Sydney (Mascot, Liverpool), 1 in Perth (Whitford City Centre) and 1 in Melb (Fountain Gate)

        • Zap them in the microwave for ~8 seconds to replicate the experience

      • A glycaemic experience?

      • Yeah, when they're fresh off the production line they just melt in your mouth… mmm…. mmm… good!

It's been a while since i've seen the light on at the Croydon SA branch though… they must be making them at odd times of the day (or night).

    • They are on the edge of melting and not melting. Its freaking awesome

    • Way better. The best.

Any tips on what time the lights on? I drive past a KK often at all hours and I never see the lights on. I always seem to miss it by 30 mins. Probably a good thing for me and my waist line.

Any tips on what time the lights on?

      When they are making donuts.

      • +2

Narre Warren VIC used to do it fresh at like 2 - 4am.. 😅

        • where is the hotlight located?

          • +2

@capslock janitor: The GIANT sign outside at the roundabout has a light up bit below the actual green-ish logo/sign.

Then there's a small one in the window facing TGIF/Fountain Gate.

Both are like that transparent perspex that lights up red so you won't really see it during the day unless you're looking for it.

Our local (Port Rd, Adelaide) I’d say evening like 5-7pm. I think because they bake a lot to dispatch to all the servos overnight

The Orange Grove KK (Liverpool one you mentioned) light is pretty much on from like 6pm onwards on most days. Have seen it on at 6pm and still on about 10pm that same night.

    • If you want to catch KK with the lights on leave 30 minutes earlier.

Put day old ones in the microwave for 3 seconds. You'll never taste a better doughnut

    • +6

They used to say 8 seconds on the side of the packaging. Doesn't come close to factory fresh though.

    • 8 seconds, not 3

  • +4

Wait it used to be a free doughnut with no need to purchase. When did it change?

    • Many years ago unfortunately.

      • Adelaide Port Rd store was always full of dero teens when we went at night with the light on.

    • It was free with no purchase last year in Vic… The website didn't have the reference to making a purchase, though I hadn't seen the light on in ages.

Are the “factory shops” the only ones with the lights?

  • BYO Hot Light = Profit.

Weird how this article tell you why their donuts are popular yet don't actually talk about the taste, but rather their innovation and marketing

    • Bc it's all sugar anyway

      • Ahhh.
Now see I thoughtmthe reasons glazed donuts (not just KK) were 50% sugar 50% fat..

I remember the days when I used to FIFO sydney for
work and every a friday used to fly back with a tray full of KK because melb didn’t have any at that stage. At least 8-10 other people on the flight has similar KK trays.

There was a time a bit later then I did the same for zumbo macarons ahhh the food fads

finally I remember the local craze for nutella donuts

    • +3

      My god man.
Are you typing this from a hospital diabetes ward???

    • T'was a simpler time

    • YES!! This was like back in 2005-2008. I remember I saw a guy brought a dozen of dozen KK (12 x 12) on a trolley in Sydney International Airport.

  • Do they sell powdered sugar donuts?

  • Donut King when fresh is best.

  • -3

    so many fatties on ozbargains

  • I always thought the red light was 1 free donut without any purchase

  • OP got the idea of this post from TikTok.

  • +4

I used to work at Krispy Kreme. I gave out a hot donut whenever anyone requested. It was never advertised but we were allowed to. Sometimes I gave more just because. General rule of thumb for me was to grab the ones further down the conveyer belt because the ones that are just glazed will burn your mouth and you won't have a nice day, but no one ever complained about it because free donuts.

  • i believe kk have a twitter or other social media that tells you when the light is on?

  • This is a tale old as time.
