…. that's a pretty good value isn't it? Compared to say a $300 Android phone.

    • +7

yep, considering the new battery and warranty.

    • +1

camera and screen would be a bit underwhelming by now though.

      • +6

So would a $300 android phone, but also the rest of the android phone would be underwhelming too, like build quality, software support, warranty etc

        • +4

Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro would like a word.
Ticks all the boxes you've listed (Warranty excepted) and the battery will last all day and into the next one very easily.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/poco-x3-pro

          • @ESEMCE: I'll just walk into the Xiaomi store to get the device fixed or the battery replaced?
That and the photos are over sharpened and un-natural - video in poco x3 is actually worse too.
Poco it isn't made out of steel like the iphone.
Poco scratch protection is FAR worse.
Small things like IP67 are missing too.
That and it's more of a phablet compared to the iPhone 8 which is a smaller more pocketable size.
            https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idPhone1=10415…

            • @onlinepred: What's it cost to get the already refurbished device fixed or battery replaced.

This would be fine for 12months, after that IOS support will be a problem. Replace with another refurb

            • +2

@onlinepred: Point to the part on the iPhone 8 that is made of steel please.

              • @Midday Murth: "The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have custom front and rear glass, made with a 50 percent deeper strengthening layer, fitted onto a steel substructure and surrounded with an aerospace-grade 7000 Series aluminum band."

Aluminium alloy is used for the rest of it, but has a steel frame. Part of the reason why iPhones are quite heavy, which can be a negative.

              • @Midday Murth: Must be heavy

            • +6

              @onlinepred:

I'll just walk into the Xiaomi store to get the device fixed or the battery replaced?

That's also not happening with a refurbed iPhone.

              • -1

@ihfree: As far as I'm aware, they have opened up their repair terms to allow third party screens/batteries to have been used prior to taking it in. It just means that certain things are not guaranteed anymore such as IP rating or any other hardware issues.

            • +4

              @onlinepred:

I'll just walk into the Xiaomi store to get the device fixed or the battery replaced?

Well no, but then again, it's also not a 4 year old phone, so you're far less likely to need to do so.

Poco it isn't made out of steel like the iphone.

I'm sure we can find a <$300, <4 year old Android made of metal if you need it

Poco scratch protection is FAR worse.

Yep, but it comes scratch free out of the box. This iPhone comes pre-scratched to avoid any disappointment when you add to them!
"Very Good- Light signs of wear. May have some visible scratches on the screen and/or some scuffing. 100% fully functional."
(my phones are always in cases anyway)

Small things like IP67 are missing too.

You reckon the refurb process included re-certifying IP67? Cause I don't.

That and it's more of a phablet compared to the iPhone 8 which is a smaller more pocketable size.

Could be a plus or a minus

              https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idPhone1=10415…

Gee the iPhone really struggles in Low Light doesn't it?
              Superior in good light though.

If you're in the Apple ecosystem and need a cheap replacement, then this might make sense…
Otherwise it's still a 4 year old phone that had battery lifespan issues from launch. I don't really see the value.

              • @ESEMCE: The screen has been replaced so no scratches….
4 years old but still performs very well even compared to recent androids.
Yes you could find a 4 year old phone with steel frame, but it wouldn't be supported anymore and won't get security patches.
True about the IP67 and refurb.
Yes true about the size, I don't know anyone who would look at a 4.7" screen phone and cross shop it with a 6.8" phone.
If you keep looking at the comparison, you will notice many areas of the low light pictures are missing details entirely on the poco due to crazy processing. The iPhone 8 retains details even if they are slightly blurry. So each to their own but I think the iPhone 8 is the better camera overall by far. - look at the donkey cushion, you can barely tell the texture on the poco.

                • +1

                  @onlinepred:

4 years old but still performs very well even compared to recent androids.

I don't know what you mean by performance but

                  • In terms of processor Snapdragon 860 is a significantly faster chip than Apple A11 bionic
                  • In terms of connectivity poco offers wifi 6 and dual sim but IP8 doesn't
                  • In terms of battery poco has 5160 mAh while IP8 only got 1821 mAh

Then there are other things like Headphone jack, 120hz display, HDR, fast charging, microsd card support that IP8 is missing.

                  • @MagicMushroom: Yep 100% if you are after gimmicks or certain features some people may use, a newer phone will be better. It’s a huge phone though so I just don’t understand this comparison.

                    • @onlinepred:

I just don’t understand this comparison

I guess then you shouldn't have started this thread?

                      • @MagicMushroom: He is trying to reinforce within himself he made the right purchase decision LOL

                        • @Lets Go Brandon: To be fair, I don’t pay for my phones. And I came from 14 years of android to try iOS for a few years with an iPhone 11 Pro.

                          • +1

@onlinepred: So you aren’t used to using an iPhone with such a small battery like this one? You seem to be overlooking one of the major flaws with these older iPhones. Really 4000mah plus batteries becoming the norm at the lower end of the market has been a game changer, especially in terms of longevity with phones. I couldn’t imagine living with a phone with such a small battery nowadays. Especially a $300 second hand device

                          • @onlinepred: Thats the problem..what was the best android phone you had? You still live with the memories of old android phones and comparing it with your latest iphones…

                            • @EssendonUser: Pixel 5, galaxy s21, s10e, pixel 4a, pixel 4, pixel 2xl, note 8, etc etc.

                  • @MagicMushroom: The battery is usually the biggest con with these older iPhones, especially refurbished. But by including a new battery, providing it’s a quality one then that makes this deal much better than the usual refurbished offerings here. However if it’s just some cheap low quality battery, then in a few months it could be terrible. The iPhone 8 never had a good battery life to begin with and a big con for some people.

                  • @MagicMushroom: whenever I tell about the features in my Samsung galaxy 21 ultra and fold 3, my friend who is a iphone fanatic used to say "its a security feature in iphone not to have it" LOL !!

                    • @EssendonUser: I wouldn’t care too much about the features difference, but 1800 Mah capacity battery is terrible nowadays, even in an iPhone.

      • +1

Screen yes, camera no. The camera is quite amazing even now. Takes proper HDR images by combining shots. Color very good too. Not overdone like the latest iPhones can be.

  • iPhone 8 gets an update to iOS 15, but becomes slower and less reliable on it. I suggest sticking with iOS 14 which works great.

If 15 is already installed on these iphones here, then it's a bummer.

    • +6

I have 15.2.1 on my iPhone 7 and not any complaints yet.

      • +2

        same…

        • +2

Same, has not missed a beat and battery is also fine, iPhone 7 is 3 years old too

        • I replaced battery once and it was under 80% under 2 years so they had to replace it again for free at Apple…

      • After installing 15, once I take a photo, I need to wait till I can see or edit it while the phone displays a low-quality preview. Same with 15.2.1. I don't have any iCould features around photos on. That's always true after installing 15 on my iphone 8.

Once I've recorded a video, when I want to watch it for the first time (after a minute or after three days - deosn't matter), it first shows "processing…" for a longer while (5, 10, 20 secs?) before even playing it to me.

The search feature (on the leftmost screen when you swipe left from your gome screen) now takes 2-3 seconds to show me the first search results - there was no such issue before. It's quicker for the subsequent searches.

Various apps quit way more often instead of staying in the background, which might be also because the apps themselves got inflated after I updated. So it's not like I can switch between 2-3 apps - too often I need to wait till they reopen.

        • Have you tried resetting the phone? Factory reset that is

          • @onlinepred: I haven't and I probably won't do that anytime soon as I'd need a lot of disk space to do a backup.

Having to do a factory reset, spending lots of time on that, to potentially make it work as it should doesn't satisfy me really.

But if I do reset it, I'll come back here and report.

            • +1

@pizzaguy: I just signed up to a month of iCloud, backed up over night. Factory reset and restore took about 30mins for me on iPhone 11 pro.

        • +1

doesn't do that on my iphone 7

        • +1

doesn't do that on my iPhone 8

    • +3

No issues with 15.2.1 on my 6s, works fine.

      • Now that's interesting as.

It's a 6yo model, the oldest that can get the update. My experience with Apple in such situations is that you can still make phone calls, but all the rest requires patience and composure.

        • +1

My experience with Apple in such situations is that you can still make phone calls, but all the rest requires patience and composure.

Guessing you haven't used an iPhone in a long time. Those days are long gone. If the battery is still ok, you're set.

        • It is not the oldest that can get the update. iPhone 7 IOS 15.2.1

        • In the last few years Apple has worked hard to ensure they support older devices well, as long as battery is kept in good condition I’ve found most current OS always best. Just don’t expect an old dog to do too many new tricks.

          • +1

@Fancydancer: iPhone 6 and 5S received an iOS update late last year to patch a security flaw, although its still iOS 12. But goes to show the extended support Apple provides.

          • @Fancydancer: You're defending the company regarding their support for older devices, then you advise me not to expect my older devices to be supported.

I've been a stalwart user of Apple products, despite their pricey flaws, just to be clear.

            • +1

@pizzaguy: I think you miss read my statement, doing new things and being supported are not the same thing.

              • @Fancydancer: Fair enough. Then I must have been understood too - I mostly want my camera and app switching to work fine on my phone, which kinda broke after I updated and - given my ten years of experience with iphones - it wasn't too surprising. I certainly didn't expect my 4-year phone to get 2x optical zoom and lasers with a new OS.

But as stated in a different comment, once possible, I'm going to and reset the phone, and report back in future.

    • +2

The optimisation Apple does is incredible so i wouldn't be too worried

      • But also all the tricks they've pulled in the past would make me worried.

Talking eg. the slopiness of iOS 7 (never forget!), the battery gate, more recently the uselessness of any airpods in windy conditions, unresponsive or confused Siri (since always; does your Siri too always respond to the sound of running tap or shower?), Apple Watch Series 3 updates (while it's still being sold).

Might be the best gear we have, but I wouldn't call it perfect or 100% reliable.

        • Battery gate? That was simply poor communication. What they did re the tech was necessary, and they backed it up with $25 battery replacements for twelve months. I had all our phones done and very grateful.

          • @Fancydancer: You can call it poor communication; that's what Apple probably called it.

Also, you referred to a thing that bothers me the least everyday, while the rest stays unresolved after years. And that iOS 7 debacle causes distaste till today.

    • Sounds like nonsense, iPhone 8 and X have the same CPU, and experienced zero issues with the 8 and X I have running the latest version of iOS 15. X has 3GB RAM vs 2GB on the 8 but hasn’t seemed to be an impediment.

      • +1

Thanks to the comments here I realised I should try and reset my device. That's a lot of work, but well - cheaper than buying a new phone.

  • OOS

  • I got iPhone SE2 as company phone, brand new.
Small and handy but can only last half day for mild use.
Its a exact same size phone with a better CPU.
Would assume iphone8 is even worse with battery life. (especially with a refurb model)

    • +3

Yes, I have an iPhone 8. It’s a great phone as long as you don’t use it. Luckily I work from home so can charge it easily. When leaving home I take a power bank.

      • +1

It’s a great phone as long as you don’t use it.
wow nice comment. Probably you can say it about any iPhone except the latest version lol

    • Wow that's crazy. I have iPhone 11 pro, and a work SE2. The SE2 I get around 4 hours of screen time on it, easily lasting the whole day ending with around 15%, while the iPhone 11 pro with the same usage is at around 40% at the end of the day. The same use on my S21 for example, would last me 3/4 a day.

      • I have 11 pro Max as personal phone.
one hour photo in SE2 will drain 80% of battery.

  • Curious to know whether these Boost Refurbished iPhone 8 uses aftermarket screens or Apple Original/Refurbished

    • +2

May vary and probably can't be confirmed.

Note that these refurb'ed phones are probably not as water resistant as new anymore.

  • +2

FYI we got one of these last year in November for a gift and when it was opened on Xmas day the sim had expired and could not be activated (can't remember exact expiry date, was between order and 25 Dec).

Boost livesupport was really helpful and ended up giving us some extra bonus data, but we needed to go an buy a $2 sim to activate and get the credit transferred. If you intend to give as a gift I'd suggest checking the sim.

Got an 'excellent' grade, and I can't recall that we could see any obvious marks on it (and I'm super anal about looking after my phones)

  • These guys source from Green Gadget https://shop.greengadgets.net.au/

So I would check their site before buying - more options and sometimes better prices.

    EDIT: Grammar

  • -4

Any $300 Android will walk all over this.

    • +1

      In IP rating?

      In long term software updates?

I have an android phone but for 2nd hand units the older apples have much better lifetime manufacturer support.
Get the latest IOS and have IP ratings that are good to give to kids.

      K

      • -2

At the $300 price point I don't think IP rating is of much importance.

This phone is 4.5 years old. To be concerned about software updates in 3 years time is just silly. It will barely function as a phone in 3 years.

        • Joe, we both know that's a lie.

Even my 2013 Samsung Note 3 running a custom rom would be a decent phone today. Hell, I might even be using it if it wasn't for Ozbargain and needing proper security for certain apps.

    • +1

      Hey Joe,
Got a link to an example of a phone that will walk over this?

    • -1

$300 Android phone, especially if it's not Chinese, is going to have a slower CPU, slower storage, and be made of plastic.

    • There will be cons and pros to each at this price point. You aren't going to find any phone for $300 that'll be better at everything. Someone mentioned software support favouring the Apple here, I'm unsure about that with a 4 plus year model though. I bought my father a $150 Samsung A20 years ago and I'm still convinced for a basic user with minimal needs that was the best bang for phone I came across. Nothing in the Apple world could be found at that price point new and he phones still receives software support heading towards 3 years old. Also it had a nice big battery that lasts for days for him even now and a nice massive Amoled screen. My point is horses for courses. Someone heavily interested in the Apple ecosystem might prefer spending more for an older used phone. Maybe 3 years from now it could still be receiving updates but then there's probably cheaper Android models still receiving updates over that time too..

      • Apple are pretty good with their updates. Taking the 6s as an example, that's received 7 iOS updates.

True, the Samsung A series has 3 Android updates and 4 years of security updates.

The A20 was an impressive phone for the price point.

        horses for courses

Woah, we don't do that here. Strong opinions only.

    • Also, could we tone it down with the American politics?

  • This is a far better deal than the coles offer posted earlier today.

That one was the same price but didn't have a new battery fitted, which is worth 80 bucks

  • Subjectively, what is really the difference between Very Good and Excellent? Love how it is open to interpretation.

  • Thanks very much OP. bought one with Excelent condition, only around $30 more.

  • One often overlooked benefit is access to the choppa, which gets you to a 7/11 store quickly if you want to lock in a stellar price.

  • +2

Might be a stupid question, but are these unlocked?

EDIT: Read the FAQ, for anyone wondering…

All refurbished phones are network unlocked and can be used on any GSM network.

  • can't pay by paypal, what's wrong?

  • If you are Apple fanboy then it is a good deal
If you android fanboy to nothing to see here move onto next android deal and stop bitching about this deal

    • +2

Yes, but I came here for an argument!!

  • Is it possible to buy this phone then trade it in for Samsung?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/676868

So you pay $287.1 and get $460 for the trade-in?

    • Assuming those prices are accurate, I don't see why not.

    • APPLE IPHONE 8 64GB
Get up to $60^^ until 04.02.22

This is what I am getting on Samsung trade in page.

      • there is a line on top of the options saying Get a bonus $400 off Galaxy S21 series 5G2 when you trade-in, even with minor damage with trade-in.

  • Phone in the main link is out of stock on all versions
    https://refurbished.boost.com.au/products/iphone-8-new-batte…

  • +4

I am really impressed with how older Apple phones keep getting updates, and disappointed with how Samsung's don't. My note 4 was a beast but the OS upgrades stopped coming, so hacked away using XDA for a year, then gave up. Meanwhile, iPhone 7 "borrowed" from library recycling and similar vintage gets latest OS. Goes to kids and still worth $40-50 on ebay. So everyone is correct. Buy an Android with newer hardware for similar price and watch it stop getting updates in 2 years, then apps start refusing to run on old software 1-2 years later. $300 not much over 2 to 4 years but premium for Apple is build quality and threefold software life.

    • That's why I never dared to switch to Android - it's just too much hassle and too expensive to buy a new phone every 2 years.

      Same with notebooks.

  • OK as a first phone, maybe.

  • +1

Consider this from the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection:
"iPhone 7 & iPhone 8 have been close to the top of the list with the most radiation".
    The least radiation usually has Galaxy (Note8 ~.17, 10+ ~.19 , S20 FE ~.24, A80…), ZTE Blade v10 ~.13 /axon elite ~.17…

  • +1

This is back in stock, though Red is currently out of stock.

    • Updated. Thanks.

  • Thoughts anyone please……..

A refurb Iphone8 ($308) or new Samsung A22 through Optus ($249 after discount), Im leaning towards the Iphone 8 as I already have an ipad so would be a simple process to maintain data in one cloud account.

The Optus is locked but as I use Optus anyway not such an issue unless I decide to switch providers. But then I wont have access to me pics and other data and so would need to migrate across. I assume with android cloud accounts are available?
