    What is it normally

      Unfortunately year on year, the Federal and State GOVT rebates go down in value, and the prices of panels have shot up considerably in the last 6 months (mostly due to COVID!). That being said, in the current market, to be able to install QCELLS which are a South Korean manufactured panels at this price, we consider it a bargain :P

      • I can vouch for this, I just got a 12kW system (2-phase, 2 inverters) installed and had obtained 4 quotes. Three of them had quoted with the “new” panel prices which had apparently shot up 20% in a month, the other had ordered their panels months back and gave me the old price.

        Either way it’s still good value and the pay back period is sub-6 years depending. I didn’t get the rebate or loan.

        Edit: What Pristine are offering here looks like great quality, and decent price too.

      Paid 0 upfront last year and $38.54 × 48 months. 370w panels×18 and growatt inverter.

        Considering the standard 370W panels and the Growatt inverter that you have mentioned, along with the fact that both the Federal and State Rebates have approxinately dropped by $1000, that seems a reasonable price. ​

    Is this upgradable to a battery system in the future?

      The Fronius inverter is a string inverter and hence is compatible with only AC coupled batteries (e.g. Tesla Powerwall).

      • What would the alternative be that is compatible with all (or close to all) potential future battery systems? A micro-inverter setup?

        • Usually, to keep all options open, you would have to install an optimised solution or go for micro inverters, which are both quite expensive options.

      • Tesla Powerwall is no longer purchasable by itself, and needs to be sold with Tesla rooftop solar system.
        All the other common battery systems in Australia are all DC coupled.

      It's going to be a long time until batteries make financial/environmental sense, though, so I wouldn't worry too much about them :-D

  • Ive always been skeptical about solar power, not the fact that its green energy, but is it really that cheap? My bills are around $350 per 1/4 and most of that is in the daily connection fee. Lets say my usage charge is $100 per 1/4 ($400 per year of off solar). With a system like this, i would only benefit from this after say 13 years, depending on sun and quality of panels/system, as i would still be paying daily connection fees anyway, or am i wrong?

    • You have to be able to move your power usage to match your generating times to make the most of it, it's not something you can just lob onto the roof and then keep using most of your power when the sun's down and expect it to help. Our last bill was a credit, which is nice

    • My specific situation: 6kW system installed in 2014, 3 adults in Sydney, AGL plan from 2 years ago, figures in Jan '22 bill: daily supply charges $74+gst, usage charges (net of solar at the same time) $120+gst, feed-in-tariff $374 (at 21c/kWh, plan no longer available, current: 12c) > total bill $160 in credit, instead of $350~$400 to pay

      • Meanwhile here in WA we get stuck with 2.75c/kwh

      • So if your credit is $500 and your bill is $400, does the feed in only cover the usage part of the bill, or does it cover everything including the daily supply charge?

        • Everything. And if your electricity is bundled with gas, as is my case, the feed in also covers my gas usage. My gas and electricity bill last DEC was an outstanding $4.53 all in. That's with 6.7c/kWh feed in, I'm in VIC so it's the most I can get unless I sign up with special offers from retailers which involves so much other bull crap which will ultimately cost me more. I'm expecting to break even from my initial cost within 3.5 years, so if you're on the fence, go for it mate!

          • @[Deactivated]: It was a no brainer for me in 2019 using this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/433944.

            The rebates were higher from the government back then, the 6.6kw system cost $5,900 installed, but back then the customer applied for the rebate which then refunded $2,225 meaning the total system cost $3,675 all up.

            Our electricity use is low-ish - quarterly bills were $350 to $400 per quarter. Let's say $1400-1500 annually. In just under 3 years the system has paid for itself as we now over the course of a year pay no electricity bills. 2x winter bills are around $70 or so, but 2x summer/sunnier quarters are refunds of around the same = $0 for the year.

            Part of my reasoning installing it back then was that interest rates are so bad, that this was practically a better way to 'invest' that money. Now that the system has paid for itself, it's savings onwards as practically don't pay for power.

            Was very easy to adjust routine - washing, dishwasher, etc we run in afternoon now rather than evening. Similarly in winter, turn on reverse A/C in afternoon to warm house before sun goes down, in summer, run A/C most of day to maintain cool temp inside, and then can back off in evening when sun goes down but house still cool. Power use at night is minimal - lighting, tv etc.

            • @placard: After all rebates, we paid $3585 for our 6.6kW Q CELLS G2 and 5kW Fronius inverter.

              We're just a 2 person household so both our electricity and gas consumptions aren't much. We're both WFH though so I'd imagine without solar our electricity bill would significantly be more. We had to shift our dishwashing/laundry habits and have implemented some degree of home automation as well which wasn't hard to do but ultimately translates to more savings

              Solar is indeed a great investment, but since you mentioned interest rates and investing, hope you're not just using long term deposits or other financial vehicles that get dictated by the RBA for investing as inflation alone would kill the miniscule gains you get with the current rates.

    Using 350W panels wastes roof spaces, many current panels on the market are 390-400W plus, and I got offered 440W Jinko panels last Nov.

      • These QCells panels' sizes: 1740 mm × 1030 mm × 32 mm, 19.9kg
        Jinko Tiger Pro 440W panels (JKM440M-6TL4 440 Watt): 1868×1134×30mm, 23.8kg

        128m longer in height, 104mm longer in length > not that much bigger when arranged on the roof, will not affect the number of rows, but maybe affecting the number of panels per row if unlucky

      Space relates to panel efficiency

      • I referred to the unusable space around solar panels on a roof.

        If one ideal north-facing roof can fit 2 rows of these QCell panels at 9 & 6 panels each row, that's 5250W in total.

        If it can fit 14-15 Jinko panels I posted above, that's 6160 to 6600W (25% more). At worst 8+5 panels get you 5720W (still 9% more).

          Case by case mate. I can get more total wattage on my roof by fitting more smaller panels.

      Most builders won't allow you to get it installed until after handover. SHERRIDON definitely does not allow it.

  • That’s a great price. I got g6+ with solaredge (better inverter) installed last year for $9k after vic discounts.

    Most panels are made in China, very few are made elsewhere. These Korean made panels get much better warranty

  • I have exactly the headline setup albeit from another installer. It's been great. At the time did some reading on Qcells which appeared a solid panel manufacturer from Korea (I think) albeit the cheaper panels were from China but performance was still very high.

    Edit: Actually having checked mine 330w otherwise same same.
    The other thing that surprised me was I WAY outperformed the forecast (though from solargain).

  • Any idea which electric retailer has the highest feed-in-tariff currently? I’m based in VIC with United Energy as the distributor.

  • Does the energy generated get sent straight back to the grid and your electricity bill is offset by the feed-in tariffs? Or is the energy converted to AC and used by your home appliances? I thought the latter but someone else told me it all gets fed back to the grid.

      First one I believe

      Depends on the type of meter you have at home. If you have a Basic meter or a gross meter then all the energy generated is fed to the grid. If you have a net meter or a smart meter, then you are able to use the generated energy at home and feed in the excess to the grid. I am currently fighting with Origin energy to change my basic meter to a smart one and they don't want to do it unless I do a renovation or add in extra solar panels to the house and are giving all kind of lame excuses for not changing the meter.

        Victorians are on smart metres. I assumed the whole of Australia too.

        • It's just Victoria which got everyone to switch to smart meters 6 years ago I believe. Queensland currently seems to be having a programme to switch to a smart meter for free. The national capital seems to be a bit behind :D

    Got solar installed through these guys early this year in NSW and would recommend them.
    It's a no brainer imo. Since installing the system in Feb and moving to Origin early April, I paid $2 in first quarter, 2nd quarter was $180 credit and third quarter currently in mid cycle and showing $150 credit. Normally, I would have paid $400/quarter.
    I went with Trina Panels and Fronius 3 phase inverter so the cost was close to 5k.
    It works out to be 2.5years payback (spot on with what OP forecasted for me)
