Very similar to a popular OOS deal posted last week https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/673480

Compared to that spec, this one comes with a marginally better CPU (4.5GHz turbo on the 1155G7 vs 4.2GHz on the 1135G7) at the expense of a Realtek Wifi 5 chip instead of Intel Wifi 6 module. In real world usage you probably won't notice any difference from either.

Good specs, I bought this last week, the down side for me is the full size keyboard (gets annoying when you’re not used to the numbers on the side), the fan turns on during light browsing and the noise is noticeable, the CPU randomly peaks to 100% during light browsing. All of this could just be my laptop.

    • How the keyboard? Is it mushy?

    • +2

The fans kicking up over nothing is seemingly a HP thing. Quite a bit of heat under the laptop too (keep the inside cool).

      • +1

I agree. I have a HP laptop (not this model) and the fan always randomly comes on flat out even when at idle, I've had it checked and compared it to another laptop the same as mine and confirmed it is normal

    • +5

It’s got a full size keyboard? That’s awesome!

      • +2

Preferable for some, for me my hands are not centered to the screen when typing which I didn’t realize will bother me until I tried a full size keyboard. All my previous laptops have not had full sized keyboards.

    • +2

Have you tried reinstalling windows from a clean USB stick? The bloatware preinstalled often is the cause for such issues.

      • +1

I didn’t try, I ended up selling my HP laptop.

        • +1

Dosada is right, check what's pre-installed, and whats in your "startup". You most likely will be able to either disable a lot of that or change its startup types in "Services" to not Automatically start, but I would do a clean install myself.

    • +1

Same thing… CPU reach 100% capacity randomly. Have to wait for few mins or close unnecessary apps from task manager

      • That's not normal and I highly doubt it that this is a hardware related problem

        • +2

that's normal for those branded laptops… every possible bloatware you can think of will be installed and running.

      • +1

Happens to me on my 2017 HP spectre x360 as well

        • +2

Doesn't happen to my old spectre x360 with i5 6200u. I'd notice if it blipped to 100% since the CPU and gpu are idling at 40% when running it on a 34" monitor lol.

I do fresh OS installs to get rid of bloat.

    • Is that backlit keyboard?

      • +1

        I believe so

    • This seems to be par-for-course for laptops with 8th Gen and onwards Intel chipsets.

    • +1

Single reason I haven't bought a new laptop is the off centre keyboard. I bought a cheque laptop for my wife but she hates the off centre keyboard and mouse.

  • +1

Never any stock of any of the specials in the one H/N in Canberra

  • +2

1.69 kg. Not too bad for a cheap 15" laptop.

  • +1

Can anyone comment on the build quality? I've heard this chassis isn't too great.

Edit: It has a full size SD card reader, which is always nice to see.

  • How does the 80 iris EUs compare to Ryzen's Vega?

    • +2

The issue is not the hardware. It's the thermal constraints and driver support. Intel Iris Xe needs 28w TDP to start performing. If the laptop is not able to adequately cool it, there will be thermal throttle which effects performance. Vega can perform at 15w TDP and driver updates are almost monthly from AMD which negates the problems experienced by Xe.

  • does this have space for a 2.5" drive?

  • +11

HN is sellong rapid testing kits for huge profits. It is now clear that Gerry called Scomo to stop making these kits free. Will never spend a cent at HN.

      • +4

Lots of countries are providing the kits for citizens for free. It is public healthcare. Gerry invested a lot in Liberal instead.

        • +3

It's really a waste of taxpayer money though isn't it, if you are actually sick then go to the doctors/hospital and you'll get tested for free.

If you have a bit of a sniffle, sore throat, mild fever etc and feel unwell then just stay home till you are better, like other colds/flus (yes I know it's taboo to compare covid-19 to other coronavirus for some reason, but particularly with the vaccine that's basically what the symptoms are)

We have moved past trying to contain it, it's just a matter of living with it like we do the many other viruses that are out there.

          • +1

@Binchicken22: It is not flu. Trump who told you so had his booster already.

          • +4

@Binchicken22: I think we should still listen to the experts and see if we can slow the spread.
There are only a finite number of hospital beds.

            • +3

@Muscles: Well I'm from QLD and considering only double vaxxed people who had taken multiple covid tests and returned negative were allowed into our state, we went from zero cases a day to 3000+ per day in a few weeks, I don't think these tests would do a great deal to slow the spread.

              • +1

                @Binchicken22: Not referring to tests…
More so mandating masks and QR codes which our premier here in NSW has changed multiple times.
I feel your pain, we’re up to >20k per day

                • @Muscles: Please don’t mention DP that premier. He is a threat to all citizens with his way of letting the virus spread not caring about numbers only ICUs.

That guy is a joke. Kids under 5 can’t get vaccinated and who knows what long term effects have for 5-11 years old plus no vaccines are 100% vs omicron. The most arrogant and incompetent premier I have seen in my 3 decades in Aus. QR codes and masks should never have been removed.

Other states got more numbers it’s likely spread from NSW due to him doing the wrong thing wanting everyone to live with it. Zero concern for the vulnerable, elderly and young ones

As for Gerry no ozbargainer should support him

          • @Binchicken22: . if work wants you to be tested then work should supply ….. i might get one , it tests positive and just show the same one all the time …. i don’t think people care that much if they spread once their kids are vaccinated and the 5-12 yr olds get shots in january …… if you have kids under 5 …… you will, have a problem.

            • +2

@garage sale: Covid is even less of a danger to children than adutls.

"children were 0.00%-0.27% of all COVID-19 deaths"
              Not even half a percent….

US Deaths per day have gone from a low of 500 per day, to as high as 4,500 perday.
It hit 11.5 child deaths per day..
So 4,500 people dying and you have 11 children dying….

Lets say 11 children died every day for a year from covid (the highest of the stats, its been a count as low as 2).
Well it would be better to ban them from riding in a car, because 4,070 children die per day from vehicle crash.

            • +2

@garage sale: I do actually have kids under 5, 2 of them.

Obviously it would be much better if this virus never existed, but the statistics on complications from infections on young people are quite reassuring at least.

I don't even know if I'd want young ones having the Vax straight up without a few more years of "field trials"… And for those who say any possible complications would have been picked up in the testing completed before they were rolled out… I'd point you to the blood clots from AZ and the heart inflammation from Pfizer.

        • +1

          lol.
Go and spend a MASSIVE $5-$10 on a covid test.

          Christ people sux ass.

Oh but its free in this one country - points to the 4 countries on earth where covid tests are free.

Well its NOT free in MANY countries. Just spend a whole $10…..

The HN conspiracy theories run deep on ozbargain don't they…

      • +1

yep, some parts of the store are leased as a franchise so buy not buying you aren’t hurting gerry, you are hurting someone who leases space and wants to earn a living …..he is also big into agriculture so don’t buy those little quke cucumbers, gerry grows en ….. also into hydroponics, truss tomatoes , beef …….etc ……..

        • +1

They are leased via gerry. He gets a bite at everything from retail sales to office stationary and toilet paper….

  • Just wondering if anyone knew which would be better, the one posted in the deal or this one here:

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-15-6-inch-athlon-3150u-8g…

    • +1

OP deal is quite a bit better. Mobile Ryzen wasn't that great until 4000 series

    • +5

I think the main difference is the CPU. The link you posted with the AMD Athlon-3150U is 2 cores, whilst the Intel i5-1155G7 is 4 cores. So the Intel should be much quicker. Considering that they are the same price, I think the Intel is the much better deal. Even though the AMD laptop has more storage, you could potentially solve that problem in other ways on the Intel laptop via external hard drives or cloud storage. You won't be able to alleviate the poor CPU performance on the AMD laptop.

      • +2

Awesome! Thanks heaps mate! Happy new year :)

  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4-3200 MHz RAM (2 x 4 GB) - Upgradeable iirc.

Is this difficult to upgrade? How would I go about this?

    • +5

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9Q7OOSwqA4

The back cover is held on by about 8 screws and plastic clips. It doesn't look not too difficult, but patience is needed with the clips and it'll definitely be easier with the right tools. If you don't already have a small Phillips screw driver & plastic pry tools, a cheap $6.15 repair tool kit like this pretty much has everything you need for this.

      • Thanks man.

Any recommendations on what RAM to get to upgrade it?

        • +3

I would go for 2x Crucial 3200MHz 8GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM sticks, a good price would be $40 per 8GB stick like Umart currently has it for but only in WA. Historically it has been as low as $39 on Amazon but currently it's a bit more at $46. Anything larger in capacity is kind of overkill.

  • +1

"CEO… 'terpreneur"…Come on Gerry, you can do it…"

  • +5

My order was canceled by them. Assholes. God I hate HN.

    • They didn't like a @outlook.com.au email address. Go figure.

  • Wondering how this compares to a desktop you can get for the same price. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    • +2

It depends if you are looking for the complete setup for $700 or just the tower. If you are looking for a complete setup you're going to need to assemble it yourself as once you write off $200 for a new monitor, kb & mouse, the types of PCs you can buy from the likes of Dell for $500 are pretty garbage. This example would be $749 total assuming you can pickup the parts and would perform significantly better than the laptop with a far stronger CPU + twice the RAM and storage. Any lower, like to $500 worth of desktop parts and it's a significant step down in performance to where it's on par with the laptop at best.

      AOC 24" 1080p VA Monitor - $179 delivered
Gigabyte USB Keyboard & mouse - $20 delivered
      DIY Intel i5-10400 (6c/12t), 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD Desktop - $550 + delivery/free pickup

      • Good point - I actually already have a screen, keyboard and mouse, so wouldn’t mind paying a similar price just for the tower. Btw, this would be for a 9 year old, generic usage and light 1080p gaming. But my intention is to buy him something that will age well (for him to use in the next 3-4 years)

        • +2

That certainly opens up more options if you need just the tower. Both of these PCs would be more powerful to begin with and more upgradable than this laptop, but that is expected when the laptop comes with its own display, kb & trackpad, battery, etc. The HP system is worse at gaming (still way better than this laptop) but comes with a complete warranty, which buying a used GPU off ebay won't come with, and it could be a solid system if down the road you throw in like $300 on a new GPU if he needs one later when GPU prices aren't so crazy anymore.

HP Pavillion Ryzen 5600G (6c/12t), 8GB RAM (single stick), 512GB SSD Desktop - $750 after cashback Being a Ryzen APU system it need all the memory bandwidth it can get to maximize performance so realistically after buying your own 8GB 3200MHz stick to add in, you're looking at $800.

          DIY Intel i3-10100F (4c/8t), Gigabyte GTX 970 4GB, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD Desktop $707 + pickup/shipping
eBay GPU listing There isn't really a point in spending <$250 on a new GPU these days because it'll only get you a GT 1030 (~$130, nothing else in this price range now) that performs the same as the integrated graphics on a 5600G so you might as well save your money

For a point of reference, a GTX 970 produces about twice the gaming performance of a Ryzen APU like the 5600G and would likely age better as a result. A 5600G has more cores and would be better at productivity, but a 9-13yo won't notice the difference at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2xNUiCX6I8

There are even cheaper new desktops but I wouldn't recommend them because Intel desktop integrated graphics pre-12th Gen (like on a i5-11400) aren't very good, or it can out right come with an awful processor like a Pentium or obsolete 3rd gen Ryzen APU (e.g. 3200G).

I bought this laptop yesterday. The HN guy was making a hard sell on their extended warranty, saying the battery is non-removable and guaranteed to fail within 3 years. He also told me that it only comes with 8GB of RAM and the system was going to use up half of that? Then, in the same breath, said it's a great deal. It came with a free 60 day Trend Micro subscription and a bonus $20 HN gift card if you activate it, but I think this promo has now ended. My initial impression is it's not that fast? Some updates and downloads took a long time and seem to hang, but after a restart, shows that they were finished downloading. Also had a couple of errors on starting a downloaded game, but it'd work if I retry. Hopefully these are just teething problems with a new laptop.

    • +1

Lol battery usually not covered under extended warranty it’s a consumable

    • For your sake, I hope so. But having dealt with lots of cheap Windows computers stuffed full of cheap parts, dodgy trackpads that feel like walking through mud, crapware to the max, it’s usually a constant level of frustration.

    • thinking of getting this for daughter for high school - does the off center keyboard people are mentioning make it harder to type?

    • +1

Before you come to the conclusion that it's "not that fast" I'd.
      1. Remove all the bloatware especially anti-virus (preferably do a clean windows install)
      2. Update to 16 GB RAM.

RAM upgrade may not be necessary depending on how you use the laptop.

      • I bought this laptop recently and it's going well. What is the maximum RAM can use in this one?

  • My dumb ass bought the slightly lower end model of this at the same price and I've been having some minor issues of it. Some glitching, freezing, random moving of the typing placeholder. It also seems to get a bit hot. Also, it ran out of memory and force closed my browser, except not even my older laptops have this issue. My dumb ass bought the display model without thinking but hopefully it fails within the warranty so I can get something better.

    • +2

if it's freezing completely that's a warranty concern.

      • Freezing for a couple of seconds and then unfreezing itself

    • +1

You mentioned it was the display model. Did you perform a factory reset?

      • The sales assistant put it aside for me and packaged it up as I had to return at a later date, but when I received it, it was at the set up stage, and I assume it had been factory reset as I had to set it up myself and put in my account details.

        • +1

Generally a good idea to do it yourself, especially when the device comes from a retail store like HN, JB, TGG, etc; as usually those devices have the Retail Demo Mode enabled and even though it's supposed to do a factory reset when it's disabled, it's not done correctly or it doesn't work properly.

If you don't have too much on it already, or can back it up and have some time, you could always factory reset, de-bloat and see how you go. Also if you calim that under warranty, they usually try and factory reset it anyways to rule out software issues.

  • Can we buy the extended warranty for this one from HP directly or need to buy the protection from HN only

  • No USB C charging for this model from limited info on port?

    • +1

Data transfer only apparently, no display out over USB-C either
