I currently use an older OM-D EM-10 with the Olympus 14-140 F4-5.6 lens - would that lens go ok and the G9 be a worthwhile upgrade?

More than worth while upgrade, best bang at this price. Yes the lens is ok but you will want the LUMIX Leica series to do the camera full justice.

If you've the version II of that lens, then I'd say it's a good pairing. Both the vII of the lens and the G9 are weather sealed, and the sensor and features of the G9 stand well above the Mk 1 version of the EM-10. Only thing the EM-10 has going for it is the smaller size which can be important for some, especially if you shoot descrete street photography. Having said that, most M43 bodies are tiny in comparison. Only exception is the EM-1X (but that is big for a reason).

Robin Wong shows what you can get out of that lens on an EM-5 MkII, which the G9 outdoes in every aspect: https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2015/07/shooting-with-olympus…

    • Yes it is the version II, and thanks for linking the interesting article.

  • It seems G9 has 30min or 10min(4k 60p) video record limit. There was a unlimited recording hack, but it does not work on the latest firmware. I’d sadly skip this deal.

What’s the alternative under $1k? Is it a deal breaker? You can start the recording again immediately. Unlike some other cameras which has a limit as they physically overheat at 4K, you’d have to wait awhile for them to cool down before they are usable again.

      • I think he is eyeing for a deal like the previous Panasonic LUMIX GH5 - $1149.95 deal. Even if the G9 in this deal came with the older firmware, he would mostly complain about lack of shutter angle, focus transition or 4K/60fps is still limited to 30 minutes.

Hard to see GH5 deals in the future though. It is unlikely a retailer still has a lot of them to do a stock clearance sale. Panasonic would rather sell GH5 mark ii.

        • I almost pulled the trigger but stopped when I found out the recording limit cannot be hacked internally with latest firmware. No other complaints with the G9 tho.

      • Having a 10 minute maximum scene is a pretty solid deal breaker if that's true

        • 10 minutes recording limit for 4K 60p. 30 minutes limit for the rest of video format.

          • @Spacexyz: Yep, I could maybe work with 30 minutes but 10 minutes is simply ridiculous
