270

One of the best Tri-Band mesh router in the market at the moment?

Not UK version from amazon etc.

Quite decent one escpailly with ASUS support software/firmware update.

Might gonna upgrade my Google nest wifi 3pk to this.

This thing is awesome.. bought last year… and has never failed me!

Been watching this for a while since I have the ax11000, but I can get someone out to run Cat6 for that price…

Routing cat6 cables to other corners of the house is good if you only needed to connect 1 device. Though if applicable it's better to have additional Access points to increase the coverage of your wifi if you got bigger house.

I have the Asus AX11000 router as the main device. I also got GT-AC2900 and AX5400 routers in other places of the house. They all connect through Asus mesh and get managed as the same network. So I have additional access points for better wifi and also more LAN ports local to the room the router is in.

  • Is this only mesh or does it work like a router aswell?

    • +3

      This is a router.

It can work as either a router or AP. I was running mine only in AP mode, and was using a Ubuquiti Edgerouter for my ISP connection.

  • My issue with asus routers is that if your ISP uses DHCP to automatically assign IP, ASUS routers have issues with losing the IP but failing to regain it unless a hard reset or internet turned off and on. I'm having to run script via a USB to constantly check that internet is up, which will trigger the internet switch off and on if it detects it is down

    • What ISP uses dhcp so I can avoid them?

This sounds like a very niche market. I've used Telstra, aussieBB and Superloop without issues on this router

Honestly for your case I'd just change ISP, I'm guessing you don't have much choice?

      • Telstra, Optus, Superloop, Aussie BB, Launtel and Vodafone all use DHCP to auto assign IPs.

      • Aussie BB and super loop both had this issue.

        Using the Asus RT ax3000

    • Changing the DHCP query frequency from aggressive mode to continuous or normal mode is meant to fix it.

      • +1

Ah maybe the RSP's DHCP server is blocking your router for spamming it.

      • Yeah I've cycled through all those options and still had it occur

        • That sucks. Did you try Merlin's firmware?

          • +1

@Twix: I'm running an eth validator so I'm just sticking with my fix at the moment, dont need more downtime lol

    • Oh i don't have that issue with xt8.

    • My AX88U works great with AussieBB on Merlin, no problem with DHCP etc

    • I'm having exactly the same issue. I'm contemplating returning my ZenWiFi XT8's because of this.

I’m happy with my XT8. Bought it during black Friday deals this year for a similar price ($637 after asking for a deal) from JB using discounted gift cards from coles. Huge upgrade from OG Google wifi and it’s amazing how much of a difference it made to things like just doing video calls through meet and teams.

  • Looking at upgrading… I saw this model but thinking of taking the big plunge and getting the Orbi 4200

    • +1

      I thought XT8 > Orbi AX4200.

More comparable would be Orbi AX6000.

      • Good point.. only just started reading up/researching yesterday. Will do some more reading on the XT8 if it proves to be superior to the Orbi 4200.
Does anyone know if the XT8 can also support up to 3 satellites (1 router + 3 satellites)?

        • +2

The limit for Aimesh is 7, so Yup

Called JB Hifi and they price matched without even blinking an eyelid. Click and collect in 1 hour :)

  • Are these compatible with FTTN?

    • +1

I believe they are a router only. Aka no built-in modem functionality. You require a standard modem connected in bridge mode to the router.

      • I am connected via telstra smart modem. Do I just connect the WAN port to this router? I had Zenwifi XD6 it wasn't connecting at all just red light. ASUS customer support said it wasn't compatible with Smart Modem FTTN. So I am returning it to OW.

        • +1

I assume you connected one of the ethernet ports on your Smart Modem's LAN ports into the Zenwifi's WAN port? Failing all that you might've need to set the Smart Modem to bridge mode.

        • +1

          Yes.
Plug 1 end into the Telstra regular ethernet port & the other into the Asus XT8 WAN port

        • +1

Buying the XT8 isn't the solution. The XT8 won't automatically connect just like the XD6 didn't connect. Don't return the XD6. Plug in ethernet from the Telstra smart modem LAN to XD6 WAN and enable bridging on the Telstra smart modem.

  • Has anyone else found the XT8 to struggle with legacy devices/IoT (eg Sensibo air conditioning controller). The legacy devices like a Fitbit Aria scale won't connect at all (technically it says it's connected in the Asus app but nothing works/syncs and upon resetting it, it won't connect at all), and the Sensibo connects/works but occasionally disconnects randomly for no reason and hence shows up as unreachable in the app, but will remedy itself with some time.

  • Is there a coupon code or am I missing something? It is showing up as $999 to me when put into the cart and attempt to check out.

    • Pretty sure it's expired.
