leaving the brands that were big in the 90s :)

PC makers like ASUS and Samsung have always been cheaper (inferior?) but now are also catching up with the likes of Apple and Sony in terms of build quality.

      • -1

Sony had good build quality? You're kidding.

IMO Asus is not inferior, they just cater for lower classes as well as premium products and has always been the best bang for buck in terms of price/quality/performance

Asus are contract manufacturers for most of the big name notebooks and many desktop mainboards.

Apple and Sony better build quality?!
Ok Apple charges triple the amount of what windows PC is reason? build quality + OS X
        There's what's called price tag.

I am a MacBook Pro user myself for the last 2 years. I can't justify the price based on spec. it's the external design and build quality.

        • And here the rest of us were thinking you were paying the price for the brand name.

      • Samsung prices are now more expensive then Sony, Panasonic and Sharp and yet the quality just isn't there.

Have to say my last few visits to JB have been major disappointments. One had even a relocation sale and their pricing and %s were astronomical.

I bought the Samsung 300E5A-S09AU from JB for $598 2 days ago… Now $508. I was happy to pay $598 for it so I think it is great value at $508. Especially cos the other cheaper laptop I was considering for $485 was a HP i3 with shared graphics from the PC shop up the road which was just ok value.
$508 2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2450m 2.5ghz CPU, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD, all the usual wifi DVD +/-, webcam, Bluetooth, 1GB Graphics Memory NVidia GT520MX, 6 Cell Battery.
3rd generation Intels are just around the corner so I suppose expect more sales.

JB have really been dissapointing over the last 12 months. Their prices used to be competitive and their staff were always happy to talk 'cash-price' which seems to be happening less and less these days. Whats happened JB?

      Retailer lifecycle:

      (a) come in cheap, destroy competitors
      (b) expand rapidly
      (c) wait for customers to start coming to you by default and assuming they get awesome prices
      (d) wait for competitors to start closing
      (e) slowly start returning prices to RRP
      (f) profit

Refer: Supercheap Auto, Bunnings, - any more examples?

"cash-price" has never been a bargaining tool at JB Hi-Fi. They don't care less and nor should they. Maybe you are thinking Good Guys, seriously cash/credit makes no difference these days.

      • High volume merchants like JB are paying around 0.4% CC processing fees these days, so you could try asking for $4 off on your $1000 TV, but that is as good as it gets.
Of course, they still pay their saleskids reasonably generous commissions, so you may be able to recoup a sliver of that out of their hide.

  • Can anyone reccommend a casual gaming laptop around the 1000 buck mark. Casual gaming.. a bit of BF3 -> medium graphics.

  • is this all JB's?

  • includes AW?

  • Yes, Alienware
