    Are these any good?

    Never heard of them.

  • +2

Yeah, theyre good. This price is even better

  • +1

I thought they were speakers at first

  • If I am connecting via wifi-5 (802.11ac), does the mesh still transmit the data via wifi-6?

Or is there no point in getting dual-band unless you have devices using wifi-6?

    • The data will be transmitted over Wi-Fi 5.

      • just to clarify would the mesh to mesh transfer via wifi 6, then wifi 5 to the device?

Or is it all wifi 5 - if the device is only wifi5

        • +3

Mesh to mesh should be wifi 6, but the end point to your wifi5-only device will be wifi 5

          • @anthman: oh great, so there's merit in wifi 6 - it's like a shared backhaul.

  • Ethernet backhaul on these or not? Couldn't see it referenced in prod details or comments in amazon

      Yes you can.
However, each node only has 1x Ethernet port. Which means if you are trying to daisy chain them you will need a switch.

  • Silly question, will this work with any router? Or do u need an Asus one?

    • +1

Most of the time these are used to replace your router. If you are running a custom DIY router or use VoIP supplied by the Telstra or Optus modem you should configure the Asus as Wi-Fi access points.

  • I can't decide between this or the Deco x20(3 pack)? 2 Story house FTTP for reference

    • The performance is similar. Asus has a much better web interface. Deco is mainly a mobile first experience and has one extra ethernet port per node.

Out of the two, I would personally would go ASUS any given day, I've had too many TP-Link routers fail on me or they eventually degrade in wifi performance.

Went through so many brands before I eventually found ASUS and was happy with it. Yet to try ubiquity stuff (heard that's good from lots of people).

    • I find TP-Link after sales customer service is way better than ASUS from personal experience

      • I had the x20 dsl modem, interface and performance were terrible. Can’t comment on the asus one though.

Support local retailers when possible. Same price at officeworks.

    • Amazon says temp OOS and OW got it available for C&C tmr so perfect, thx @Black Hole

  • Will these reach 100Mbps easily? I tried the Netgear MK63 and they only go up to ~80 in the furthest node.

edit: I am guessing due to dual band only.

Thanks, just ordered to work with my recently purchased AX88U

  • +2

If anyone wants WiFi 6 and additional ethernet ports, I think the Asus Zenwifi XD6 is back again for 399 in officeworks as mentioned on previous post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/666195

    • Is the XD6 much better in terms of range and performance than the XD4?

      • XD6 offers total bandwidth of 4800Mbps compared with XD5 at 1200Mbps.

XD6 also offers more MIMO antenna on 5Ghz at 4x4 compared with 2x2 on XD4. This will improve both range and performance.

  • have been using aimesh with 2 rt-ac86u router's (updated firmware) with constant disconnects, but when reconnected says signal is great. unsure about aimesh tbh

  • Very good price. I recently bought the 3 pack at what I thought was a great price of ~$430. Now looks like I could've got a 4 pack for the same price :(

I've got mine meshed to an RT-AC88U router running Merlin firmware. Works perfect.

Two are connected by LAN, with one using Wifi to connect. Even though it's only dual band I easily max out the 100/40 internet speed when connected 1 room away from the third mesh unit, which itself connects back to a LAN unit across 2 rooms.

  • AX1800 Seems a bit slow?
Normally you would want AX3000 or AX5400?

    • Unless you're transferring gigabytes of data over wifi to multiple devices then it really doesn't matter. AX1800 can transfer 800MBps to a single device (https://dongknows.com/asus-zenwifi-ax-mini-xd4-review/). If it's for internet traffic, then unless you've got a gigabit connection you'll have no troubles maxing your NBN traffic.

AX3000 or AX5400 might make a difference in 10 years time, but I doubt you'd still be using the XD4 then.

      • Fair point. I ended getting 2x TUF AX5400 for $150 each from Amazon UK.
        Its great.

  • Thanks, bought a 2 pack from officeworks. It was shrinked wrapped. However when I opened it, I noticed that both the XD4 units had 1 WAN and 1 LAN port. My reading was that the router should have both ports and the node should only have 1 LAN port.

    • Same with the set I purchased from Amazon, both units were combination router/nodes. I thought that's great as I was expecting one of each, which makes this deal even better in my mind. I've just finished setting up my mesh and so far very impressed.

      • Thanks for confirming as I wasn't sure if I got a refurbished one with 2 "routers". Can you check what country zone you have, especially on the node. With AiMesh, you can only config the router, not the node. I have set my router as Australian both wifi setting and timezone. However, when I am connected to the node via wifi, it shows as US. I have a mac and it shows under the wifi icon

        • Sure, on my AX88U the wifi is set to Asia (default) and timezons Sydney but I can't find anything for the node, perhaps because I'm using wired backhaul rather than wireless ??

          • @cohiba: I have a similar setup to you. The XD4 are connected via Ethernet backhaul. It is set up in Aimesh. When I am connected to the node, I see that it is US country zone (via option and click wifi symbol on my MacBook). You can’t change the country setting on the Aimesh mode.

  • Does any one know how many watt is this unit consumed?
