Imagine if we had some sort of Law for Consumers in Australia that prevented this type of misrepresentation…
PS5?
No 🙂
Needs PCIE 4.0. I think the cheapest is the WD Black SN750.
*SN750 SE is PCIe 4.0, not the original SN750
Worth putting it into a case and making a portable SSD or will this be on par with a Samsung portable SSD?
Speed wise you’d be limited by the USB ports speed so probably better to get the Samsung portable. Cheap cases don’t cool these well enough for large transfers
I bought one for this purpose and it throttles quickly on big transfers, though the enclosure I bought is nothing fancy. For the cost of both together I could’ve got a Samsung T7 on sale, which is probably a better option.
Just putting it out there that the Crucial P1 uses a Silicon Motion SM2263 controller which contains a fault requiring a firmware patch, which 4 years later Crucial still haven't released. Personally I'd steer well clear.
What's the fault?
It's not very well documented but here's a bug report which outlines some of the issues with the SSD (and others using the controller).
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202055
Even Intel released a patched firmware for its SSDs.
Just an FYI for those buying who do a lot of writing, this is rated for 200TBW (Vs 600 for some Samsung / Kingston versions for slightly more)
For those with a Mastercard and haven't claimed Shopback's $10 cashback on gift card purchases, ideally you can purchase a $100 amazon gift card and use it to bring the net cost down to $88 ($10 + 2% cashback).
