Not sure if this is a good deal as HDD prices have been slowly recovering. The cheapest on Static Ice seems to be $179 but that seems to be USB2. Guessing most buying this will be ripping out the HDD for their NAS so the fact that this one is USB3 may not matter to most. Hopefully this is a good deal for someone.

Note: This price was the same as their lightning deal a couple of days ago.

Perfect timing as I need to build a big fileserver!

As many 1 star reviews as 5 star.

I've not had good personal experience with Seagate HDDs.

    Caveat emptor.

Nice price but a lot of bad reviews e.g DOA. Probably not worth it.

      • Is it worth importing this kind of delicate electrical device where is unknow if you will get dud or how it will be treated by the courier company?

        • I beleive if it is DOA, Amazon will pay return postage and replace or refund.

  • i dono about other people, but when building a nas i dont want to cut corners and have it shiped and throw arund from across the pond,… esp more so when you just use it straight of the bat with no raid… 3tb down the drain, really playing with fire

the last two drives i bought came from DSE

made in china (subject to thai flood tax)

they would have gone on a slow ship from china to sydney where it went via courier from their warehouse to my place

is the difference from china to here much different from say california to here?

        i would say so,..

buying 1 item, thats so small and can be tossed around by one of 50 jerks along the line…

compare that with pallet loads of hhd's getting shipped costing millions, youd think they would take more care with them, coz if they drop them then the whole shipment/batch is dead…

        • All courier parcels get thrown and tossed so much you would cringe if you could see. Luckily most things are protected by excessive pakaging and HDD'd are rugged things.

        • chyawala , were talking about a hhd which has a very fragile needle, in it, if that goes bye , bye data,.. thats why id rather not buy this fro over seas, the only thing i wont.

    • What features are better, warranty?

      • I think the model of the HDD inside may be better/faster than the one the OP posted although this won't really apply to someone who wishes to use it as an external HDD

Very nice price, almost back to pre-flood levels. But with HDDs esp. Seagate I prefer to buy from local stores.

  • Tempting but after the click of deal my last Seagate had (and LOTS of others had), I won't touch them again. WD for me.

  • I had bad experience with my seagate 500gb usb3.0
It just died after barely 12months, never been dropped, while my 4 yr old maxtor 2.0 is still running great.
Imho i wont buy a hdd that will be shipped that is most likely to be tossed.

  • I bought 2 of these just before the floods from US Amazon @ $99 each. Hope to see those prices again!

    • As in two 3TB drives for $99 ea?

      • hmmm.. according to camel, the lowest these have ever been is $110. how did you get it at $99?

for those concerned about doa, amazon have amazingly good service. if it's doa, they will likely offer a refund or a swap over and will most likely cover most (sometimes all) of the postage costs back.

my brother bought five of these for his nas/server - six months on and still running fine. i'm sure there are many other who have had similarly good experiences.

  • You are much better off buying the Australian version of this drive. The US drives only have 1 year warranty, whereas the Australian models have 3 year warranty. The USB2.0 version is available for under $180 locally.

    • The limited warranty won't cover for lost data.

      • There is a statutory Consumer Guarantee that has a clause for consequential losses (which can not be excluded by a vendor or manufacturer), but that only applies to purchases made in Australia after 1 Jan 2011.

‘Consequential losses’ are the reasonably foreseeable costs to the consumer in time and money because something went wrong with the goods or services.

Again, buying from Amazon in the US means you are not covered.

As for the pain and misery associated with data loss - we all know we should backup important stuff diligently. ;-)

  • This series of hdd are just too shoddy to use for everyday stuff, sure, if you just want to back stuff up, fill the drive and leave it a lone, it would be fine, but having personally owned the 1, 2, and this 3tb drive, I can safely say they are too unreliable to use.
