  • Don't flame me, but what's the benefit of something like this over a $30-$50 straightener? Genuinely have no idea.

From what I've gather (second hand info from my wife), the largest advantage is the heat up time. Her entry level straightener takes around 3-6 minutes to warm up and it will continue to cool and warm up as it is being used so the whole process of straightening and/or curling can be dragged out simply because of the warm up time. These take around 20-30 seconds depending on the model.

The other advantage is the heat sensors which should keep the heat constant. Having a steady temperature running along the entire ceramic pieces allows for more control and even application.

      • Thanks for the helpful reply :)

      Valid question!

I bought a Cloud 9 to replace a broken GHD and used a cheap straightener in the mean time.

YMMV but I found the cheap one didn't glide through my hair as well, it would pull on individual strands, it wouldn't straighten as 'neatly', and my hair didn't stay straight for as long throughout the day. Potentially also better for hair damage, but I can't confirm as I only used the cheap one for a few days.

      • I was also looking at the Cloud 9s but they're about the same price (when not discounted) or more depending on the model.

        • Cloud 9 is much more expensive than GHD?

@isthisreallife22: For this price, I'd get the GHD. But as @CoreNex said, they were priced similarly when I bought my C9. At the time, I recall reading that the quality of GHDs had declined as manufacturing had been moved to another country.

            • @ufwpd: C9 are supposedly the “real” GHDs.

Solovair are the real Dr Martens. Etc etc

      • Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated both of you :)

    • I've used the cheap ones in the past, and have had the same GHD IV styler for about 10 years now, bought for around AU$190. My main reason for opting for GHD is:

The cheap ones are made of cheap/poor quality porcelain plates. If these are cheap/poor quality, they can damage your hair.

GHD claim to heat up to the 'perfect' temp so as you get the best straightening effect, but also minimal damage to your hair. I do find the cheap ones heat up way too much.

      Btw great price!

Reviews on Amazon from buyers in Australia seem to indicate the straighteners sold arrived with a UK plug

    • glad u pointed that out, was about to ask the wife if this was the model she wanted.

    • Bought GHD gold a month ago from Amazon, it came with AU plug no issue..

The reviews are a combination of reviews from different sellers for the same product. It is common to find reviews from customers who bought from Amazon UK but were delivered by Amazon Au. In this situation, it is an Amazon Au listing delivered by Amazon Au so that situation should not occur. If it does, you can always complain and return or get a price match.

  • If you order in the app you get a further $10 off.

I remember when these were must-haves and $299 seemed like an absolute fortune.

  • Price gone up

    • Phew. Just got in then

      • It said 6 day sale but I felt that price was ultra low and wouldn't last

  • How come price changed suddenly.. i am about to order

    • Looks like it's sold out at the Amazon Au store. It's now being sold by Amazon UK.

    • Back on!

      • Thank you ordered one
