  • Excellent! I just moved into a new place and there’s definite something here for me.
No luck with the giveaway though… can’t enter because I’m not on FB!

I got these directly from Soma six months ago and they cost US$119 each, or ~AU$165, so there's about a $30 saving for this 2 pack in comparison. That regular price of $400 is a bit bonkers though.

  • I have so many question re this.

One charge is enough for approximately two months, or you can leave the adapter connected and never worry about charging again – whichever is more convenient for you.

    but

Battery: 1400mah – up to 50 cycles without charging

I get that a cycle is a open + close, so if you open the blinds once per day and close them once per day, then the battery lasta 50 days, ~2 months. If you open and close twice a day, then it's closer to 3 weeks of battery.

Also, do you unattach it from the wall to charge? Or connect a powerbank to it? Or is the battery easily swappable?

Then, there that solar panel mentioned, but nowhere to be seen in the photos:

Smart Shades is powered by a beautiful crystalline solar panel, so you won't have to worry about charging batteries.

edit: I can now see there's another, fourth product photo. Hard to noticein that thumbnail scroller. It shows the solar panels, but still no idea how big it is and how it's installed.

These have power delivered by a 3.5mm speaker plug. It comes with a charging adaptor that is USB-A on one end and 3.5mm plug on the other. I found the easiest way is to plug that into a power bank to charge these.

One gripe is the port is quite recessed into the unit so sometimes you have to unplug it and try again if it didn't go in properly, and I feel like the charge cable's gonna break eventually with all the pulling directly on the cable instead of the plug.

It charges very slowly, I'd give it 8 hours or so from a low charge. I have it set on automation to start pulling down by west-facing blinds as the sun goes down, then go back up at sunset and it does last 1-2 months, though the torque is noticeably diminished once the battery is low.

They do each come with a small solar panel, which if you can find a place to put them, can be set and forget. I don't like having that extra cable dangling permanently so I haven't really tried it.

  • The photos don't show what it looks like with the solar panel and charger connected - it's hard to tell if you can make it fit in your window frame

  • Do you need to buy a ‘sold separately’ device for HomeKit integration?

Can the battery be removed and charged externally to ‘hotswap’ so you don’t need to run an extension cord to your window to charge it up? (The solar panel looks pretty ugly to be sitting on your windowsill.)

    • You can buy the Soma Connect which is a bridge to integrate it into HomeKit, but it's literally just a Raspberry Pi that acts as an uncertified bridge. They make the SD card image for it available so you can get your own Raspberry Pi and flash an SD card to do the same thing.

Buying the Soma Connect from Soma costs US$49 (~AU$68), which I don't think is too much more than the price of buying a Raspberry Pi, case, SD card and AC adaptor yourself.

These use BTLE so it's also possible to just integrate it into an existing Homebridge setup for example using https://github.com/ebaauw/homebridge-soma, which appears to have more functionality exposed in HomeKit than Soma's bridge.

Zemismart zigbee is cheaper and arguably a better option

    • Agree, I have 4 units at home and so far so good, it's not the most silent unit, but helps my home automation with hubitat

    • So you retrofitted the Zemismart ones to your existing blinds? Was that relatively easy? Oh and did you get the rechargeable ones?

      • For me, I removed the safety blind plastic and put the zemismart rechargeable zigbee motor with 3M. When I need to charge it, I just need to remove the unit and charge it for a couple of hours and put it back afterwards. and yes, it's around 3 months battery life for standard usage (open in the morning, close at night)

        • Thank you. I think this means you have the unit that pulls the existing cord? I was thinking about the motors internal to the roller and was wondering if you just pull them out and put the other one in.

  • Any chance these would work with blinds that are 2.7m wide x 1.8m high?

    • The largest blind I'm using this with is about 1.6m wide x 2.7m high.

Thanks. Does it seem like it struggles at all with the size or runs ok?

        • I can't guarantee your case but from my experience there shouldn't be any problems in regular operation.

You can adjust the speed of the motor, which I've set to about 70% to reduce the noise when it's running. It does run noticeably slower when the battery's low but I haven't had issue with it not generating the torque to pull it at up 70% speed.

When set at 50-60% speed and it's low on battery, it can reach a point where it doesn't have the torque to pull up the blind.

          • @lint: Thanks a lot, appreciate the detailed reply

I just bought a 4-pack of these shades directly from Soma yesterday. 40% off for Black Friday - 4-pack US $357 + Soma Connect US $49 ≈ AUD $561.87 (on my 28 Degrees credit card)

      That's a really good price.

Another thing to note, if your beaded chain has a connector and it needs to run through this, there's a fair chance it'll just get stuck.

It does come with a continuous loop plastic beaded chain that you can install in place of your existing chain, but it's a bit of a hassle as that likely requires taking your blind down. It was easier for me to just buy a beaded chain splitting/joining tool off Alibaba to convert my existing chain into a continuous loop.

    • The price you shared does not include taxes. So the deal turns out to be the same. We are offering a 2 pack for $299 AUD delivered from our QLD warehouse they are offering a 4 pack for $592.61 Delivered internationally.

      • $561.87 was the amount in AUD charged to my credit card. I paid in USD as my 28 Degrees credit card has a good exchange rate and no additional international transaction fees. It may not be as good of a deal for others that pay in AUD or have additional bank fees/bad exchange rates.

I don’t think there are additional import taxes as taken from their shopping guide, but will see when it arrives.
        https://www.somasmarthome.com/pages/shopping-guide

Customs duties, taxes and import fees

        Non-US customers

Australia: Orders up to 1000 AUD / ~ 650 USD can be imported from EU to Australia with no additional customs charges or taxes.

        • I am aware of the import tax. I just went on there site and the only price i could see included the tax was the US $357 + $72 Tax.

Anyway its a different deal as we are doing a 2 pack not a 4 pack and we use Australia Post from our QLD warehouse.

  • Looks like the the Soma Connect can be run on a Raspberry Pi.

Soma Connect is $99 while you can (in theory) get the Raspberry Pi Zero for less than $10 (they appear to be OOS everywhere)

    • +1

It will work on the PI 3b and 3a. They have the files available to download so you can easily make your own.

  • Maximum size of curtains Smart Shades can move: curtains up to 2 meters (7 feet) in width and 2 meters (7 feet) in height

Would love to grab some, but my windows are 2.4m high, so 2m limit kills it for me
