Earn an Extra 20,000 Qantas Points When Taking out a New Qantas Points Earning Card (Can't Have Held in Last 12 Months)

300

If you haven’t held a Qantas Points earning credit card in the last 12 months, you could earn an extra 20,000 points on top of existing offers of up to 130,000 bonus points. Offer ends 30 November 2021. Conditions apply.

Seems like a pretty decent deal for anyone eligible. Can't see anything excluding partners, etc, who might be additional card holders at the moment. The steps to take part are:

  1. Simply register for the offer before 30 November 2021 by logging in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

  2. Apply for a Qantas Points earning credit card at qantas.com/cards and be approved by the relevant card partner.

  3. Make an eligible purchase on your new card within 30 days to ensure that the points you’ve earned from your purchase are credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account before 28 February 2022.

There a couple of references to 'first-time cardholders' on the page, but the T&Cs make it clear it just means you can't have earned Qantas Points on a Qantas Points earning card in the past 12 months.

Can't see this has been posted here yet, but it appears to have started on 1 Nov. Hopefully not targeted.

  • “Members must not have earned any Qantas Points on a Qantas Points earning card into their Qantas Frequent Flyer account within the past 12 months from offer registration to be eligible.”

Seems like you can’t have earned any points via a credit card before. I wonder what happens if you create a new QFF account and link it with the application.

Then transfer points to your main account after

I wonder what happens if you create a new QFF account and link it with the application.

If intending to open an additional QFF account under the same name, this would be heading into territory where it's technically breaking the Terms and Conditions where 'Each Member may have only one Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership Account'.

  • What about WWS points transferred to QFF account?

    • It is only concerned with points earned from a Qantas points-earning credit card, not points earned in any other way.

  • Thanks OP.

Mrs w has just hit QF silver due a change in her travel. Our strategy has been to have QF in my name and VA in hers - however (up to) 150k points is rather tempting…

  • I'll have to figure out the latest I can get this to work, gotta hit $3k on the HSBC long running $600 cashback deal which I just got last week.

  • Brand new to credit cards for rewards. Do people pay annual fees (ranging from $0 to $495) as the profits from rewards outweigh annual fees?

      Yes.

If you are brand new, I suggest you start with this card: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/626191

      No fees, $600 cashback.

Secondly get this AMEX card: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/659660

The annual fees are all given back as travel credit - $395 = $395 in flights/car hire/hotels and the points can be converted to miles with an airline or cashback or gifts.

People like to cycle the AMEX cards, so cancel quickly and wait 18 months and do it again.

avoiding annual fee when possible, at the moment ANZ has a free one, CommBank $30, Westpac $49 wouldn't go too much higher than that.

There will always be deals with bonus points + reduced annual fees (with no first year fee on occasions) when it comes to AMEX and the banks. Pretty much happens year round. Transferring the points to Qantas, Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines etc gives you the best value.

    • Ahh thanks all. Just going to now find some time that doesn't exist to go down this rabbit hole…. Putting everyday purchases on a card and being conscientious doesn't sound too bad.

    • You can also check out this deal :
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/660486

See my comment at bottom for a way to get the fee waive.

      Another one is from Westpac:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/660486

It's a low rate credit card so income requirement is less than other premium cards.

  • Does this apply only to Qantas branded cards (ie. citibank serviced), or any card that earns Qantas points (co-branded)?

    • I believe it is any Qantas points earning card, based on the page it links to having both.

  • fk me. i got my anz ff card 2 weeks ago and recently got awarded FF points in my first statement month :(

  • Not eligible but Westpac credited me with 30k in points despite me cancelling the card before 12 months is up LOL
Their incompetence can sometimes pay off it seems.

  • I am confused. I registered for the offer, however now it says the promotion has closed.

But I haven't applied for a card yet. I thought I could apply in December/Jan. If I now apply for a card, and
Make an eligible purchase on your new card within 30 days to ensure that the points you’ve earned from your purchase are credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account before 28 February 2022.

Will I receive the 20,000 bonus points?

    • My expectation is that you would, assuming you meet the other eligibility criteria - not sure of what complexity you're referring to? The risk you might carry, is that if you hypothetically apply for a card in late January, then by the time the card issuer turnaround for processing, card postage, etc — when you do start making purchases on the card, these points may not post to your QFF until after 28-February-2022 (e.g. if crediting points are tied to statement posting / statement paid) which could jeopardise meeting the criteria.

Writing up a short summary of the process, hopefully it helps people in the future if this deal comes up, or to manage expectations
11-Nov: Signed up for offer with email confirmation from QFF. At point of signing up, met the criteria of no Qantas Points earned via a CC in the past 12 months.
17-Nov: Approved for a QFF points earning card - Qantas Premier Platinum
22-Nov: First statement posted with annual fee. No transactions as part of this month.
20-Dec: Next statement posted, with Qantas Points from sign up bonus and usual spend posted to QFF account at the end of the period.
21-Dec: Points from the additional credit card bonus of 20,000 landed to QFF account

    Pretty smooth process.
