Which popular or well regarded movie/tv show/game are you embarrassed to admit you haven't seen/played?

Have you ever pretended to have seen or played something when with friends/strangers/friends so you didn't feel left out?

Movies: not much, I am huge movie buff so I've seen most things. I haven't seen a few recent Best Picture winners like Moonlight, The Kings Speech and The Shape of Water. I watched Chicago a few months ago for the first time and it was OK. I think it's aged badly.

TV: Tiger King. Squid Game. I only watched the first season of GOT. I've never watched a reality series ever apart from the first season of Survivor US.

Games: I grew up playing Japanese games so missed out on a lot of Western games. I've never played any GTA games, nor any American RPGs like Witcher etc. I tried playing Fallout and Red Dead Redemption but couldn't get into them. I did finish Cyberpunk last year and enjoyed it.

Have you ever pretended to have seen or played something…

Nope. I don't give a sh.t what someone is going to think because I haven't. It's not like I've committed a crime against humanity or anything. haha

    • +1

I mean have you really lived if you've never seen The Ride of the Rohirrim

      • +1

        The Ride of the Rohirrim

I haven't even heard of that before - and I've lived all these years just fine! haha

    • -1

Embarrassed maybe not for this subject but it does happen to us all even when we refuse to admit it.

      • Why would anyone care enough to pretend they haven't seen something? If I felt I needed to pretend to my friends that I'd watched something just to fit in then I'd seriously question my choice of friends.

  • +74

Why would anyone be embarrassed about not seeing/playing something?

    • +7

      Because they are kids/teenagers.

      • +8

Or because people whine endlessly when you say you haven't seen something, and you just want them to shut up? It's like the Kramer ribbon scene from Seinfeld: "HE HASN'T WATCHED GOT! WHY AREN'T YOU WATCHING IT NOW? DO YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE?"

        • +7

I embarrassingly admit that I haven't seen Seinfeld.

          • +2

            @skid:

I embarrassingly admit that I haven't seen Seinfeld.

No soup for you! You come back, after watch Seinfeld!

          • +3

            @skid:

I embarrassingly admit that I haven't seen Seinfeld.

Probably not as embarrassing as admitting i watched a few episodes, turned it off cause i thought it was shit.

            • +2

@Lord Fart Bucket: It has a few gems but overall it's nothing special.

            • +1

@Lord Fart Bucket: I (internally) judge peoples sense of humour when they go on and on about the "genius" of Seinfeld.

              • @dizzle: No you shouldn’t judge people on Seinfeld. It is genuinely brilliant, but it’s ok to not like it.

Judgement about peoples sense of humour should be reserved for anyone who likes Mrs Browns Boys.

            • +1

@Lord Fart Bucket: I watched a lot of it in the 90's because it was on the TV. Really though it's just socially awkward people who have trouble communicating - and most of the situations they got into could be solved with a 30 second conversation.

          • +1

@skid: I can only assume you didnt watch TV during that period as it was hard to avoid at least an accidental scene

  • +4

I wouldn't go as far as saying embarrassed but the ones that come close to me would be:

Game: Bloodborne - everyone who says they play it like it so much, and I feel iffy never trying it
TV Show: Black Mirror - like everyone seems to have seen it and seem to bond over an episode or two
Movie: Marvel movies, especially the avengers ones seems like everyones onboard, and I'm yet to see fully. Harry Potter and Star Wars I haven't yet to see which seems to have quite a big fandom.

    • +15

A work colleague told me how good Black Mirror was, so sat down with my wife to watch it. Let's just say episode 1 is not PG. If you're ever going to watch the show, skip episode 1.

      • What if you’re going to not watch it but make out you did? Should you still have skipped episode 1??

      • +15

The first rule of Black Mirror club.
Tell people to start at S01E02.

        • +1

this is so true, I wish someone told me this, I get so emotionally drained now watching it I can barely watch an episode every few months.

      • If you're ever going to watch the show, skip episode 1.

On the other hand it sets you up for what's ahead. There's not much that is as disturbing (at least in that way) as that episode, but you know it's going to be strange, dark, sometimes disturbing, and a fair bit of it is realistic for what you can expect in the future of the real world.

        • +1

All of Black Mirror is disturbing. But the first episode is disgusting in a way that none of the other episodes really are. I've known a few people who were turned off by the first episode, but who I suspect would really like the series overall.

      • And people thought the British Prime Minister having sex with a pig was unrealistic. They soon learned.

  • +3

    matrix
    titanic

actually haven't watched these movies end to end

    seen parts

lots of movies actually lol but have watched dark Knight around 20 times heheh

    • -6

Dark Knight sounds like a pr00n

    • +4

I don't want to spoiler it for you, but The Titanic doesn't end well.

      • Still waiting for the sequal

        • +1

          Titanic 2: The Titanic Arises

          • @KSMLJ: They made that in 1980, "Raise the Titanic", not associated with James Cameron.

      • Yes it does, DiCaprio freezes to death.

  • +5

Most. I don't care, why would I be embarrassed lol.

  • +1

I haven’t watched Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Rocky, Godfather, GOT

    • Godfather, and I’m few years shy of 50 :P

      • +2

Every time i watch godfather i catch some small thing that i missed last time. Also, godfather 2 is the best

        • I know mate, I’m going to watch them eventually :)

    • +3

Do yourself a favour and watch everything that you just listed. They are all amazing and much better than a lot of the rubbish that is made today.

      • +2

I recently watched godfather and wasn't super impressed. It was ok but i think the hype ruined it a bit

        • +1

          re-watch it…. the whole series.

it really is the type of movie that you pick up more and more as you re-watch.

and how it all wraps up at the end… heartbreaking. a true classic.

          • +1

@UFO: Eh. People loved 2 but i found it boring. Different strokes for different folks. However i recognise that at its time it was probably groundbreaking

    • +2

I don't think Starwars aged well. I recognise that it was revolutionary at the time, but if you watch them now then you'll probably find them campy.

  • Movies:
Forrest Gump. Never seen it. Dont really care for it. (InB4: OmG. DoNt kNoW wAhT YoUsE aRe MiSSiNg)
Most of the Marvel Avengers series. Again, just looks like over hyped tripe.

    Games:
    Animal crossing, any of them.
    PUBG/Fortnite/COD/MW/Battlefield
    Skyrim
    Fallout anything
    Borderlands anything
    Farcry anything

    • +1

Fallout 1 and 2 were great for their time. I loved the kind of sarcastic humour that random npcs would spout.

One guy was standing in a toilet cubicle kinda quoting Shakespeare: “out, damn pee, out!”

    • I hate all those comic superhero movies. Seen heaps. Hated them all…. but the last couple of avengers movies were actually really good.

    • +1

Maybe when you're older and wiser you can consider watching Forest Gump, or maybe not.

I think most critically acclaimed movies are great, except for The Shape of Water, that movie is especially stupid.

      • Gravity is even worse than the shape of water

  • +2

Haven't seen the Marvel, Star Wars and LOTR movies but not embarrassed about it.

    • Same boat. I just say im not a geek when asked about it.

      • +8

You shouldn’t be embarrassed about not watching them. However you should be embarrassed by that response.

  • +21

I’m more embarrassed about some of the crap i have watched and or played…

    • Yeah not a good list for me.
      The only way is essex
      Love island uk/us/aus
Jersey shore and Jersey Shore Family Vacation
      Geordie shore
      Floribama shore
      Vanderpump Rules
      Siesta key
      Shahs of sunset
      Ex on the beach uk/us

I do have a line though. No Real Housewives shows.

  • +1

This might help some of youse.

    embarrass

cause (someone) to feel awkward, self-conscious, or ashamed.

    • +2

      feel awkward, self-conscious, or ashamed

That’s how I feel if I watch a superhero movie

  • +1

    Hint to OP

TV mainly isn't real life, it doesn't matter if you have or haven't seen the rubbish on TV, you'll survive unscathed either way.

Games? Meh, never got past Pacman and don't care either.

  • +2

I feel it would be more embarrassing to be quickly caught out for lying about having watched something/played something, because that's just weird. It's a great way to build relationships with people, let them show you the thing they love.

Most stuff that's culturally popular isn't that great. I'm a massive star wars fan but I'm really aware of the fact that it's simply because as a kid watching the original trilogy with my dad was amazing. Mostly it's a collection of ok movies and some really shit ones that meld together into this whole awkward, disjointed universe. But we all want to be jedis.

  • +1

Barely watched any of Game of Thrones, nil for Succession

Haven't seen Boyz in the Hood or Top Gun

Never play a main GTA. I played a little bit of "Bikie DLC" for (I think it's #4). Got most of the way through Red Dead one but didn't finish it. Finished the Zombie DLC for RDR though.

  • -1

Movies; All MCU, last 20 years little interest in movies are a form of entertainment really. 2-3hrs to find out a movie is waste of your time is a gamble no longer willing to take. Though were a few good ones, Dune was the last one I actually enjoyed and was plenty surprised I wasn't insulted.

All FTA TV last 20 years.

Games; Halo series, online games and anything that has a subscription.

  • +4

I haven't watched the Ozbargain movie

  • +5

I don't know what Parks and Recreation is, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask

    • +2

      It's pretty great

    • +3

I was hooked by the first line of the first episode. The main character asks a little girl this question about the park:

Would you say that you are enjoying yourself and having fun, having a moderate amount of fun and somewhat enjoying yourself, or having no fun and no enjoyment?

Idk, I thought that was really funny lol

    • I tried parks and rec. Watched 3 seasons. Nowhere near as good as any other sitcom I've watched.

  • I feel shameful for watching any show at all, for that my life is in disarray and I still waste time on that sort of thing. Films are ok and generally of higer quality.
I don't feel anything about having not watch particuar shows/films. But I haven seen half the Harry Potter films, and don't care for one I have watched, as well as hte Lord of the Ring & Game of Throne. I once forgot its name when talking to a friend and referred to it as "that dragon show". That whole gerne is really not my thing, seen Dune because I like the director but not impressed.

  • +1

How about this, a grown up still watching The Rugrats because of nostalgia while all his friends are either married or a parent.

  • +5

How insecure does one need to be to be embarrassed about such things.

  • Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies.

  • The Simpsons and GoT

  • Anything with Ryan Reynolds is something I would wish I could say I have never watched. But sadly I have. His latest one sucked me in because I thought maybe this one would not have him pissing me off but I was wrong.

    • +5

I am a movie aficionado and i have developed a system to not make Ryan Reynolds piss people off, do you think people would be willing to pay for this knowledge?

      • +1

        Brilliant!!! 👏👏👏👏

    • Ryan Reynolds I have never watched

only as Berg is worth watching

    • Reynolds is hilarious!!

Deadpool. If you don't at least chuckle in some of the parts in that, you're dead :).

      • I think he’s one of those love him or loathe him kinda guy. I remember him if the sitcom about the Pizza shop and maybe that put me off him. I really wanted to enjoy Future Man but switched it off halfway through. He always seems to have the same personality.

  • Have never seen or read anything Harry Potter.
    Never seen Game of Thrones.
Never seen a comic book movie outside of Batman/Joker etc.

Not embarrassed by any of these, but these are the big cultural movements that stand out.

  • -2

Game Of Thrones - watched one episode & thought it was a kids show with dumb robin hood 1960s throwback language

  • -3

Home and Away/ Ramsey Street, and most Ozzie CRAP. I have never seen one episode or one full ad of any of this rubbish.

  • -2

Never ever played a computer game. Doesn't care.

  • +2

    i love The Room

    • 2003 or 2020?

    • Room in Rome

  • +2

ummm no? Why would anyone pretend to have seen or played something they haven't. how low does your self esteem and need for inclusion have to be to lie about something like that.

  • I've never watched Game of Thrones, any Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter and never had a Netflix subscription.

  • I don't watch TV apart from ABC.
    Watch 3-4 movies per year.
Haven't played a computer games in a few years

So its probably easier to just list what I've watched and played rather than what's missing.

I have re-watched LOTR extended edition a fair few times but am definitely embarrassed to say I haven't played the Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor/War games which look amazing.

  • -4

WOW LOOK AT ME IM SO COOL AND SPECIAL I HAVENT SEEN THIS POPULAR PIECE OF MEDIA

    • +2

I think you have capslock on

      • I bet he’s the type of person to hold Shift down for every letter instead.

  • +2

    Godfather series 1,2 and 3

    • They made a Godfather series as well?
      I really have missed out

      • I meant the movie trilogy

  • not really embarassed, but here's a small list

TV: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, all of the Netflix hits

    Movies: Harry Potter, Twlight.

Games: FIFA, NBA, GTA, RDR, Uncharted, TLoU, anything Battle Royale/MMORPG/MOBA

  • +1

Games: GTA 5, WoW, Fortnite, Battlefield etc.
TV: The Godfather, Friends, Santa Barbara, Game Of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, The IT Crowd, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Track

PS. Not embarrassed by not having experienced the above.

    • Personal opinion :
For TV items, with some of those you're really not missing much. I have a deep dislike of movies and series that draw people in, but either don't maintain their standards or don't have a sensible ending - need to finish what you start. Game of thrones did both - declined massively in quality, and after building up some really interesting major characters with lots of bloodshed, ended with selecting some minor background character to sit on the iron throne, via a committee. Worst. Ending. Ever. And Lost was just as bad, but was also incoherent. There's a reason nobody wants to rewatch these, and they vanished without a trace after they ended (much like the island in Lost).

Friends is fine, but just fluff - I've heard it described as an end of the day heatsink for people's minds.

Breaking bad is pretty good (decent story, with a genuine narrative arc), and IT crowd is also fluff but it's just funnier and much shorter than friends (as it omits the soap opera aspect), so those 2 are worth the time if you get the opportunity.

      • Thanks for such a detailed response to my comment mate

  • Never saw Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, any Star Wars/Trek movies, Dr Who, Ted Lasso, etc. Not embarrassed though because most people I know know I don’t give a shit about feeling I need to be across popular things I don’t give a shit for the sake of joining in dull conversations on things I don’t give a shit about.

    • Quite angry though.

      • I don’t give a shit
