Which popular or well regarded movie/tv show/game are you embarrassed to admit you haven't seen/played?

Have you ever pretended to have seen or played something when with friends/strangers/friends so you didn't feel left out?

Movies: not much, I am huge movie buff so I've seen most things. I haven't seen a few recent Best Picture winners like Moonlight, The Kings Speech and The Shape of Water. I watched Chicago a few months ago for the first time and it was OK. I think it's aged badly.

TV: Tiger King. Squid Game. I only watched the first season of GOT. I've never watched a reality series ever apart from the first season of Survivor US.

Games: I grew up playing Japanese games so missed out on a lot of Western games. I've never played any GTA games, nor any American RPGs like Witcher etc. I tried playing Fallout and Red Dead Redemption but couldn't get into them. I did finish Cyberpunk last year and enjoyed it.

        • Do you take shits instead?

@buckster: I take plenty of shit when I tell people I watch Greys Anatomy.

  • I've never seen Fight Club, but haven't pretended that I have. Planning to watch it soon though.

Only saw the first ep of Squid Game and it didn't hook me. Is it worth continuing?

    Two Girls, One Cup.

  • Here's real answer. Reasonably religious and conservative parents so I pretty much never heard or saw any of the normal kids movies or fairy tales for my child hood. Pieced together the general premise of most based on school yard convos but always felt dramatically out of the loop. Funnily enough at work the other day something came up about Hansel and Gretel and my colleagues couldn't believe I don't know a single plotline of that story, still haven't gotten around to googling it…

  • I've pretended to have some interest in football before. It usually works for a while until someone starts mentioning individual players. I struggle to keep up with the name of the teams let alone actual players.

  • +1

    Game of Thrones

  • zelda stuff
    kingdom of hearts
    final fantasy

    50 shades of grey

also Game of Thrones as above

  • Back in the day going to high school in the 90s we used to watch trailers and say we watched the movies

  • +2

I somehow missed Princess Bride, and apparently missed some kind of cultural milestone because of it. Watched it and thought it was a bit meh. I think you had to see it "back in the day" when you were a kid.

    • +1

Watched it and thought it was a bit meh

      Blasphemous heathen!!

  • Game called Bioshock. It seems nice, but I never find the time of desire to play it. I have list of modern day classics from the 2007 - 2013 that are very good titles, unlike some games nowadays.

  • Game of thrones

    Indiana Jones

Final Fantasy 13 and 14 (I have played every other one)

  • Haven't seen or played many; not embarrassed in the slightest.

  • +1

not embarrassed but still need to watch LOTR

  • +2

Star Wars movies. Just can't watch any of them beyond the first 5-10 minutes! Don't know why.

    • +1

Absolutely the same. I cant get into Star Wars despite so many people raving about it. Just bores me. I know the downvotes are coming my way.

  • Im the opposite actually, i have binged some tv shows i dont really want to bring up with my friend.

    Little house on the prairie
    Highway to heaven

Just to name the worst but was good veiwing. Also i tend to rewatch devil wears prada with the wife. Im not sure but ann hathaway does it for me in that movie.

I know the internet is where people ask stupid questions. But if you’re seriously embarrassed by this… god damn

  • +2

I'm so ashamed that I haven't watched Tiger King. I'm literally shaking just trying to type this. It often keeps me up at night, and even if I can get some rest I'll often have nightmares about tigers and wake up with cold sweats. Oh and if you're wondering, no I wouldn't DARE tell my colleagues or family about this, what would they think of me?

  • +1

LOTR(Any of them), Star Wars(Any of them), Harry Porter (Any of them), DC/Marvel shit (except Black Panther)

  • None. I have seen ALL movies and ALL tv shows and I have played ALL games. I 100% care about what other people think so I live my life watching movies/tv shows and playing games I don't like with money I don't have just so I don't feel left out when I hang out with friends and especially STRANGERS (I hold strangers' opinions to the highest regard).

  • I wouldn't say embarrassed, but I'd never seen The Sopranos, despite it always being ranked as one of the greatest TV shows ever made. For me, The Wire is the best I've ever seen or am ever likely to see.

I've finally got around to watching The Sopranos recently and am just starting the second season so a long way to go. Very, very good indeed but so far I still think The Wire has the edge. Really enjoying Sopranos though.

I also only recently finished Breaking Bad. Another great show but not on the level of the two above.

As for GOT, I just cannot muster any interest in watching it.

  • I know people that wear it as a badge of honour rather than being embarrassed.

    Squidgame

    Cos it’s shite

Not sure why people like that crap

    • Parasite, Squid game… Are you okay South Korea?

  • Any political related posts, shows, podcasts or documentary . I just say yep i saw it and just say the opposite if they are liberal, labor or 3rd party persuasion - I am here to have a good time and keep friends, not get embroiled in a political ideology argument that makes no difference to local, regional or global aspects of life aka armchair activism … Dont let political parities divide the public

  • In terms of movies, shows and games, nah I couldn't care less what people think about what I have or haven't watched/played.

But something I have pretended to watch/follow/have a general interest in is AFL.
Now I couldn't give any less of a f about AFL, and my friends and family know that. But where it becomes an issue is in the workplace. It's not that I'm embarrassed about not watching/being interesting in it, more so that I want to be aligned culture wise with certain senior staff that can be a pathway to new opportunities.

Not embarassed to admit it at all lol but people do go get confused when they ask me if I watch anime, I say yes because I've seen hundreds of series over the years, but I have not watched Naruto, My Hero Academia, JoJo, Attack on Titan and a couple other popular newer series.

  • +1

Literally hadn't watched any of the LOTR until last night.

Worth it for the final movie, Two Towers was abit meh but ROTK maes up for it.

  • I recently met someone that hadnt seen a single star wars or harry potter movie. Like, how even?

    • +1

I haven't seen a whole star wars one since the 90's. I watched them on VHS at a friend's house and remember liking them. Didn't see Ep1, tried to watch Ep2 and thought it was shit, then when people were saying how much better than Ep1 it was I gave up trying. I took my nephew to see one of the new ones a few years ago but got a work call half way through and had to leave, wasn't really disappointed TBH. I tried watching the original Star Wars again as an adult but couldn't get into it. I've concluded that they're just not the sort of movie I like.

    • I haven't either and will never do.

  • I hadn’t seen the original Star Wars trilogy till a few years ago and my friends always gave me crap for it in high school.

Same with LOTR, I’ve seen the first one but one day I might binge the whole trilogy over a weekend when I get some free time

I think so as a kid, I wasn't allowed to watch many normal things like sesame street caus it features puppets of monsters/demons and strictly prohibited. Having christian parents who actually believe things like demons exist irl was pretty embarrassing and I wouldn't have wanted anyone to know so pretended I had seen. I used to sneak it where I could, learn the songs, I've watched quite a bit of sesame street as an adult and am quite caught up and still watch clips when celebrities/artists I like are on it.

  • The Godfather.

    • I bought the box set of these on BluRay a few years back. Probably through an OzB post, still have not watched them

  • Runescape / pokemon

  • I don't think any of this is embarrassing, in fact I'm particularly embarrassed to admit I game at all as it feels like a huge waste of time. I only ever talk about real life stuff in my social circles.

  • +1

I play TF2 on steam , cos i been playing since the orange box and i am great at it and its fun.

  • I have not watched Breaking Bad and GOT! Kill me please

    • Just prepare a part of your life of not doing anything but just binging on these two. On the plus side, you get to watch as and when. When I followed GOT on release, it was like i was having withdrawal symptoms after each episode and had to wait till the next one to get my "hit".

  • I haven't seen the Godfather movies.

  • GoT, breaking bad, last air bender, any starwars movie, lost

I just didnt get into it

  • Forrest Gump 😬

  • squid game, stranger things and chilling adventures of sabrina

up until recently i hadn't seen parks & recreation or the office (u.s. version)
now i've finished one and up to season 4 on the other

  • +1

Haven't seen The Wire. Probably the only thing I think that I should watch.

    • You absolutely should.

  • Pulp fiction. Not really so embarrassed about it.

  • Avatar, doesn't interest me.
Biggest film ever or something - but not a care at all.

The whole you gotta see it in 3D really put me off.

    So I never saw it

  • R/teenagers

  • Have you ever pretended to have seen or played something when with friends/strangers/friends

Yes, I have pretended to understand/like Matrix for the last 20 years!

  • I've never seen The Godfather

  • I don't know… I don't pretend to know things I don't actually know. I wouldn't feel left out either. I just ask, "Oh? What's that like?" Fans looooooooooove telling you things about what they like. I never feel left out.

Unless it's sports. I try to avoid starting conversations about sports. I would go out of my way to escape conversations about sports.

  • No I am actually proud not to watch popular cr@p. When I watch something on someone's suggestion is 99% of the times disappointing.
