  • None of the Android mobile phones currently is capable of USB-C/DP-Alt mode 1.4 bandwidth, so the HDMI 4K@60Hz + USB 3.0 is not possible. It will be at best 4K@30Hz.

Also, you need a 100W PD charger in order to achieve 87W out on the passthrough port.

  • Can I plug 2 USB-C monitors into this and still get power?

    • If you believed in their claim of 100W PD in and 87W PD out, that means at most 13W for the ports. Problem is that I am cynical about the output 87W claim.

Hi rep - where did this product with 4K60 and 1000mbps Ethernet go? The product link from this deal goes to a completely different product now: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/656857

    • The 4K60 and 1000mbps Ethernet is out off stock, and it may in stock the end of the month

  • +2

4k 60Hz sounds great, until you realize the ethernet is 10/100 :(

  • I tried the 6 in 1 with my Acer Predator Helios 300 and could not get the HDMI port on the hub to work (everything else was ok). Plugging in the HDMI directly to the laptop works fine. Haribol tried to troubleshoot, but couldn't solve. Any tips/tricks from Ozbargainers to get it working?

That laptop is interesting. It's intel 11th gen CPU with nVidia graphics card. Graphics wise, due to the laptop supporting HDMI 2.1 (via nVidia GPU), you are better off with the HDMI port (especially if you have a monitor that supports HDMI 2.1).

Now, for USB-C/alt-mode, this is where the mess and confusion currently is. With that laptop, you want to go for DP 1.4 chipset based hub. The 6 in 1 you've got is DP 1.2 based. Not sure whether the device simply refuses to use (because it doesn't make sense as it only has 50% of the display bandwidth compared to DP 1.4) or it is a chipset compatibility issue. Another interesting aspect is given all these USB-C hubs, in order to support USB 3.0, can only use half of the data bandwidth for display, DP 1.4 is essentially to achieve 4K/60Hz (due to the halving of bandwidth).

The hub you bought, even if it works, can only achieve at best 4K/30Hz. I only have one 11th gen Intel device, but that one doesn't have nVidia graphics card. Let me know if you would be interested for me to try out a different hub which is also DP 1.2 based (see if it is also no display). Though, no idea when I will actually have time to test it.

      • Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I've tried connecting via the hub to both a 1080p and 1440p monitor with no success. Haribol were kind enough to send me a replacement unit, but that didn't work either so seems like it's the compatability issue you flagged :(

Only Android device I've got is a Galaxy Tab A20, dunno if that can even screen mirror via cable! It picked up the keyboard and mouse when I plugged the hub in, but no signal to monitor sadly.

Since you're all over this topic, is there a USB C hub you would recommend that's compatible with the Helios 300? Mine's an older model - https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/predator-model/NH.Q7YS…

Checking the link you gave me, you have the 10th gen Intel based Helios 300. Unfortunately, it only supports USB 3.2 gen 2 for type-c. Alt-mode is not mentioned at all, which means it is not wired.

The reason why 11th gen one has gone with Thunderbolt 4 is due to Intel responding to AMD mobile CPUs as those CPUs have embedded GPU with decent support for multiple external displays. This is one of the most frustrating aspect of USB-C. It has so many loopholes and makers take advantage of them. Even Apple does so with M1. USB 4.0 with Thunderbolt 3, once you looked into it deeply, the reason why it is TB3 is because it only supports 1 external display.

I am sorry to give you the bad news, but it is quite unlikely you can get external display out of that USB-C port as it simply isn't wired to the GPU. I am quite frustrated with Intel as Intel, through its arrogance, refused to get HDMI and alt-mode done right for years (4 years). Intel finally done it correctly for 11th gen BUT with 12th gen, there are additional changes which are enticing.

          • @netsurfer: Ah, that's a shame, but thanks for the explanation and background info! At least now I won't get disappointed by buying another hub and wondering why it also doesn't work lol

A quick follow up, tested my old, ancient, el cheapo hub (DP 1.2 chipset). It does work with Intel 11th gen USB-C/Thunderbolt port, but at 4K/30Hz. So, the issue you have is most likely compatibility issue. If you have another device to test, I suggest you try that (to rule out it is not the hub that's broken).

If you have a Samsung or LG flagship Android phone (S9, S10, S20, S21, V40, V50 etc…), use that to test. Those should work. El cheapo Xiaomi phones don't support USB-C/Alt-mode. iPad Air or Pro with USB-C would also be a good test (those are actually DP 1.4 based though…).

  • Does this one work in extended mode with 2 external monitors + the laptop screen on a macbook pro? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B088RFVR6X

Triple Displays Only for Windows is stated.

The reason is, Apple refuses to support USB-C/MST. If you prefer multiple displays over 1 "Thunderbolt" port, then you must go Thunderbolt 3/4 with daisy chaining. There is a reason for it. Thunderbolt is better at that, especially at higher resolution. Deep down, Apple prefers you to go Thunderbolt (because if you go with any of the current USB-C hubs, even the latest, you are using 50% of what the port is capable of). It is unlikely we will see USB 4/USB-C hubs any time soon and there will be another mess with USB-C/alt-mode DP 2.0 (which is at best only close of being finalised).

The situation is even more tricky with M1. M1, only 1 external display (for Mac Mini, you could use the HDMI port to make it two). If you want more, you need to hack it with DisplayLink (and NO USB-C hub would provide that, too expensive, and not sensible for PC users), so you are looking at Thunderbolt docks (or if you must go for cheaper way, one of these el cheapo USB-C hubs and then a bunch of USB-A to DisplayLink adapters). M1 Pro, up to 2 external BUT once again no USB-C/MST. M1 Max… more external displays support BUT yes, you guessed it no USB-C/MST.

      • Thanks for your comment and insight, I wrongly assumed this was straightforward!!

Do you think I can achieve running 2 externals and the laptop screen on extend mode by doing this - this is on an m1 macbook pro:
        - Connect one of these hubs on the usb 4 ports and connect one monitor to the dock via hdmi
        - Connect another monitor via display port to the other usb port on the macbook? or even a usb c to hdmi (via an adapter)?

No, it is a limitation of M1 chip, in particular the GPU side of it. DisplayLink is not display port. DisplayLink is mostly software emulation. While that does workaround the issue, you don't want to use heavy graphics on the display connected via DisplayLink. Another thing is DisplayLink could cause issues at times, especially after an OS upgrade (you generally need to update the driver, which tends not to be available right away).

If you must do it, you need a DisplayLink adapter. The reason I indicated USB-A to DisplayLink adapter is because such adapter is cheaper and you could use an USB-A port on one of these hubs (assuming it feeds enough power to the adapter). Technically, M1 supports up to 2 displays natively. However, for Macbook Pro/Air, the HDMI port is wired to the internal display.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend going down the DisplayLink path. Last time I used DisplayLink with a Mac was about 3 years ago.
