    Price-matching JB Hi-Fi

  • Awesome! Wanted to get these for Xmas for our camping trips so perfect! Thanks!

  • are these any good? Range and battery wise?

    • +7

Says up to 3km range and 3AAA batteries per unit.

Operating time (in hours): 20 hours based on 5% transmitting, 5% receiving and 90% waiting mode with non rechargeable alkaline batteries.

      • +3

        thanks Bob

      • +3

You'll get about an hour of talk time for a set of batteries, which for some kids, is about an hour of total play time, and for other could last for days.
        :-)

        • Wondering how long will the batteries last if use case is around 90 secs a week?

    • +18

These are really a kids toy but pretty good quality for the price.
3 AAA batteries needed for each radio. Be prepared to spend on rechargables or lots of batteries.
0.5 W power limits the range to only a few hundred meters in most cases. Max 2km in perfect flat, dry conditions with no obstacles and new batteries!
      Made in Japan.
They use standard CB radio channels, so anyone with a CB radio or scanner can hear your kids talking. Some training of kids needed to avoid sending names and locations over the radio. Also take care not to use emergency or commonly used channels.

      • +2

thanks Adriany, I need more range, I think I will skip

      • Really made in Japan? Would be a super bargain knowing what labour costs are there. I have a few bits from Uniden and noticed their quality been built to a price.

      • So you wouldn't recommend them at the wharves while picking up a coke shipment. Guess I'll stick with ANON.

      Range: no

      They say 0.5w…

I've been using 1w GME radios at work and the range is pathetic. Sometimes they won't even work at 500m over clear flat ground. Can't transmit anything over 1km away.

They're for line of sight only.

These radios on offer today have half the power. Wow. I'd consider 1w radios to be at "kid's toy" level and 0.5w to be even less.

We recently got some 5w UHF from GME and they cap out at about 3km. Another person with a 5w radio 3-4km away could just hear me, but I couldn't hear their replies. So 3km over fairly flat terrain is about the max usable range of a 5w radio.

Any claims that these radios at 1/10th the power will transmit with a 3km range is very unrealistic.

They're okay for family comms around a camp ground I suppose. Don't expect more than that. If you're close enough for these radios to work, then you're close enough to shout and be heard.

I found them terrible in built up areas and not much better on the road.

Tested them from my truck to another truck a few hundred meters up the road and it wasn’t great.

Might be alright for kids camping as long as they aren’t too far apart.

    • +1

Yeah i've got a set and they work well. I just put in aldi nimh rechargeables and charge via microusb :)

I use them between two adjacent houses, not on moving vehicles or similar

    • +3

It really depends on your applications. I am a ham (as in amateur radio operator) and have quite a number of radio transceivers yet I have bought a few similar 0.5W units. I find them very handy when I need to climb up into the roof space/on the roof/under the subfloor. If I have forgotten something I just use the radio to get help instead of shouting or bringing a full-sized "proper" radio.

It is also pretty good for little kids (kindy age and under) to play with due to their small size and lightweight. However, if you have teenagers, you will be better off getting them a more powerful set as the range on these are pretty limited to the roof/subfloor for reliable communication. They are not suitable for cycling/trekking.

Basically unless you have very specific applications in mind for these, you should get something else as your first set of radios.

    Copy over and out.

    Good xmas present.

Make sure you buy recharable batteries so you charge it over USB

Got the 3 pack of these a year or so ago, they're great for kids, recommend!

  • Be careful what you say over these at a campsite!

    ProTip: Change the default channel

Other than that they are great, highly recommended at this price.

    • Yes, change the default channel also these has Kidzone aka CTCSS.

If you do not need 4 set of talkie, here is an option:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Uniden-UH45CB-2-Handheld-Walkie-Ta…

    • Thanks got one!

  • Be aware these are really for kids, due to how physically small they are.
I struggle to easily press buttons and hold it easily due to my normal-sized adult hands.

  • Anyone got any Eneloop deals for NiMH batteries to use with these/?

    • I couldn't be bothered waiting, or searching, for specials. I just buy the Eneloop or Fujitsu (same battery from FDK Japan) from here all the time.

  • Thanks been waiting to get some of these for Christmas

  • +2

I was in the market for some walkie talkies as well as we are going on a road trip.

I looked at these because they seem to be an ozbargain favourite.

Talking to people and reading reviews, the message seems to be that the distances provided by uniden are vastly overstated, these cannot reach 3kms.

These are quite weak and can really be considered toys.

So I opted for a stronger model in the recent JB Hifi 20% off all UHF offer.

    • +1

These quoted ranges are probably measured in unrealistically ideal conditions and based on line of sight. Would be super helpful if we are all birds.

  • +4

They are quite good for kids.

    I paid $100 for it.

No batteries included but you install rechargeable AAAs and charge it with a Micro-USB cable. much easier.

You take it when we go camping.. all you will hear is 'Testing, testing, can you hear me?' ….. 'Yes, over'. 30 seconds later 'Testing, testing, can you hear me?'

Kids have a ball with it.

  • +11

Would buy, but have no one to talk to

    • +1

how far are you from my place?

This one any good says upto 6km range …may be they mean vertically.

  • use mobile, whatsapp etc

    • +2

What's the cost of 4 x Mobiles and then add cost of 4 x Mobile data plans etc to be able to use Whatsapp :-)

    • And they don't work outside of the tower coverage.

  • are these any good for road trips? if not which ones are good for that?

  • These are great for my young ones around the house. Probably don't go further than 500m in range. Nice size, colours are good, batteries are decent and they are fairly hardy. Degfinitely not water proof, or sand proof.

Good for a muck around or as someone else said, climbing into the roof space etc.

  • Got some for Xmas. Thanks op

Anyone has any experience with these, please?

    • Would they work in straya?

    • its the right price. I prefer 5w. Can it post to Australia?
      custom allowed?

    • And those are more expensive?

  • anything can record sound?
    I'm looking xiaomi beebest radio

    https://www.google.com/search?q=xiaomi+beebest+radio&client=…

  • We use these all the time for our caravan holidays. Pretty much reach every corner of every caravan Park we have been too. Wouldn't stretch it past that.

  • I've got what I think is the original model of these, as well as a slightly newer version. They're at least 10-15 years old if not more. Study and reliable. Range isn't amazing but I found them good for (recreational) bush walks, campsites and when running events at school.

Don't consider them a safety device though, they aren't gonna have the range you need to contact anyone. A CB generally probably isn't a good thing to use for that.

But basically for a lot of use cases I found these great and the fact you get 4 for the price of one of the more powerful ones is the main benifit to me. Less people missing out and a lot more contact. No private channels though, but I never had any issue finding a non-allocated free channel to talk on.

  • Thanks op, bought from JB hi-fi instead.
