With a 360° horizontal view and 113° vertical view, the Pan Tilt has everything covered.

Not true. I think it will need a 180° vertical view to cover everything

What if I told you that everything in the 3rd and 4th (time) dimensions can be observed from higher dimensions, without the need for pesky recording devices such as these?
Oh right, you would ask how to cover recording of those higher dimensions as they also are a subset of everything. Well, don’t worry about that, our engineers are figuring that out now.

  • The image quality and HDR on this one is pretty good.

I ended up returning it though as it missed a lot of motion events despite changing the motion sensitivity.

I went with the eufy 2k indoor camera instead although more expensive.

    • Did the motion capture improve with the eufy?
      109 for the eufy atm.

any other pro/cons from your experience aside from the resolution?

      cheers

      • +1

Eufy didn't miss anything! Eufy works with homekit as a bonus if you're into that but not the kasa. None of them showed the stream live on the Google Home app (unlike my arlos) but either can be summoned to stream on alexa and Google home assistant devices.

Both can record on microSD cards 24/7 without a need for subscription but the eufy can also connect to local NAS via RTSP, not the kasa.

I guess if you're looking for a surveillance app for security go with eufy, if you're just after something with continuous recording for playback later or just to watch a live stream remotely go with the kasa to save a bit.

        • Thanks for that. I'm looking for a baby monitor but also use for internal monitoring when not there or when the kids dont need monitoring anymore. It is a bit annoying the Kasa does not support RTSP/ONVIF esp if wanting to use as security and the camera gets stolen.

          • +1

@kingyone: Oh also to add, there’s no way on the Kasa app to save events you have and download them as clips or screenshots to your phone. Whereas eufy have this built in on their app if that’s something you’ll find useful.

Does anyone keep their WiFi on 24/7?

Hold on, do people turn their WiFi off at certain times?

      • +10

He'd respond but someone called and the dialup modem disconnected.

        • +2

Imagine thinking "might just quickly search something on the iPad"

goes and plugs in Wi-Fi and waits 2 minutes for it to boot up

      • +1

you mean you wear your tinfoil hat all the time even to bed?

      • -7

I do, and I don't need a WiFi camera. And what's so funny to have WiFi turned off at certain times. Oh, forgot you have a WiFi camera

        • +1

A WiFi camera, WiFi computer, WiFi laptop, WiFi tablet, WiFi lights, WiFi TV, WiFi games console, WiFi mobile, WiFi watch, WiFi Kindle.

Why the **** would you turn WiFi off for any reason?

          • -3

@Tacooo: Why the ***k do you keep WiFi on when you are asleep? Don't tell me you have a WiFi camera.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Did you just ignore the entire comment? On top of the devices that use it, there is literally zero reason to turn it off, ever.

              • -4

@Tacooo: You must be high on ice so you can use those devices 24/7 without sleep. Good on you. I need sleep and I don't use wifi while asleep

                • +7

@[Deactivated]: You don't use the devices, but the devices still use WiFi. You don't use electricity while you sleep, so do you turn off the electricity at the mains box? How about gas? Do you use the mains shutoff valve while you sleep since you don't need gas to sleep? Don't forget the water mains. Don't need water to sleep.

                  • @Tacooo: Well said.

                  • @Tacooo: Going through the same thought process as my other comment, then it wouldn't be unreasonable to turn off the gas. Water and electricity could be needed overnight (lights, toilet, tap).

But then I could see people turning off gas and electricity; water would be a bit of a stretch, personally. But doable.

Reasons why? Electricity - zombie (standby) power - it does add up. Water/Gas - leaks (although really you should get those fixed rather than just turning it off overnight; and if you're that concerned about potential leaks, get it inspected).

I can understand your objection to turning off the WiFi (and by extension the electricity/water/gas), but apart from the extra effort to turn it off (and then back on) and any potential issues cause by the switching (resetting clocks) I can't see any other real reason not to do it.

To put that another way - I can think of a number of reasonable reasons to turn them all off, but the only real reason I can come up with for not turning them off boils down to convenience.

                • @[Deactivated]: …. do you think wifi will somehow stop you sleeping?

                • @[Deactivated]: so you ask "Does anyone keep their WiFi on 24/7?" but then refuse to accept you're in the vast minority when people actually answer you?

              • @Tacooo: I can think of a few reasonable reasons for turning it off. Note: I leave mine on, but I have a slightly more connected home than "most" people (Home Assistant).

                1. If we're ignoring the devices that use it ("on top of the devices that use it"), there really is no real need to keep it on when asleep
                2. Power usage (yes, it should be small, but it is non-zero)
                3. Potential for hacking (again, this should be small but it is non-zero)
                4. Potential for people nearby using your internet overnight - if unsecured or weak (or known) password

And this is ignoring the tin-foil hat reasons (but then why do you even have WiFi…)

        • And these guys thought they were hardcore tight-arses. They're only first-world tight-arses, innit bro.

I'm not going to lie. Up until 3 years ago, I'd switch off the wifi before getting into bed.

It was also a good way of forcing myself out of bed, as I needed to turn the router back on.

Several other countries have similar laws.

Wi-fi cameras, especially 'cloud' cameras that send data to homebase, are a good way to endlessly spy on customers (and easy to hack)

      • +1

We have our router, wifi etc on a timer - it turns off at 2300, on again at 0545 (0800 on weekends). We like the off time - we should be in bed. I also think having it off while not needed is better for us re radiation. Although I run a whitelist for devices allowed to connect on the router, the ultimate security is simply not having it on - Mr Bean philosophy 😄

Does anyone keep their WiFi off at anytime? I always find wifi cameras useful.

    • +1

Do you switch off your modem or something?

      • -2

I do switch off my modem

          I'll bite. Why?

          • -1

@BartholemewH: I don't need wifi to help me sleep

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Seriously, how high are you right now?

              • @Tacooo: Ask yourself. Now time to get some sleep.

                Wi-Fi off.

    • I suspect you are one of about 100 people in the country turning wifi off in 2021.

It's only going to upset all the devices which like to do their automatic updates and time synch.

    • Do you own a phone or any other internet connected device? You know it continues to use internet while you sleep. If you turn off wifi, it's just going to use your mobile data instead, unless you turn that off too which seems tedious and over the top in the internet-connected world we live in.

They use minimal electricity and data for background tasks so you're putting in more effort turning it and all connected devices off, if you are that much of a stinge, there's much better ways to save electricity/data.

  • It was like 40-something during prime day earlier this year.
I bought one to try, but it wasn't compatible with the existing camera software I use (Livecams Pro).
I use a mix of Foscams and Aldi/Maginon cameras that work fine with 3rd party phone apps.
They are also PTZ with audio.
    YMMV

    Night vision sucks on this.

    • Mine works just fine. Very crisp picture.

  • You get this for free with the current TP-link promo https://www.tp-link.com/au/promotion/
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive,

    • Yeah I got one and found I liked it so I got some more. You just keep adding them and the app just displays all cams at once, it's pretty sweet

How's the sound detection? Thinking of using as 2 as baby monitors.

If the internet is down, can you still connect/view? Was reading everything goes through the tplink cloud but not sure I understood correctly.

How's the local storage on an sdcard? Any idea of days held per gb.

        Many thanks

        • +1

Very good as a baby monitor, it seems to cancel out any dull noises or background noises, but anything like a baby murmur, stirring, or sharp noises like something falling over or whatever is picked up very strongly.

As for internet down - I'm not sure, haven't had any outages here.

Storage on the SD card isn't bad, but not great either. Basically whatever capacity card you put in - double it and you'll get the hours stored.

So a 64GB card will give you 128 hours or 5 and a half straight days of recording.

But you can just set it to motion detect and record which would be a lot more simple.

          • @Odin: thanks for the helpful info.

it doesn't make sense if the internet is off but you are on your local network that you wouldn't be able to connect but yet to confirm

          • @Odin: Any lag opening live view and lag reloading the same live view when switching to a different app fir a split 2nd.

If the internet is off, can't connect locally. Seems to be common a lot of cameras but some still allow local access

  • So does it auto track and zoom in on humans?

  • The xiaomi equivalent is about $50, is this much different?

  • Is this wall-mountable?

    • yea comes with mount nd screws

  • Anyone find the camera and app takes a while to load the lvie view? Not sure if it's the app, my camera or internet…

    • Yes, 7-10 seconds. If I switch to another app and then back, it has to load again rather than keep the stream open. It's annoying

  • $55.20 here for anyone subscribed who didn't purchase or wanted more.
