But thats a router only. Some of us still have 19th century copper telephone wire NBN and still need a modem :(

    • hi @Metro2450
what VDSL2 Modem/Router would you recommend for my case: FttB
      thanks in advance

      • Sorry to hear you are on FTTB. Personally I would go to eBay to see if there is any 2nd hand/new Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2(Technicolor DJA0231) available below $100 :-)

        • +1

          Why?

        • +3

          Don't do this

This is exactly what I did because this is what everyone on whirlpool tells you to do. The technicolor I purchaed is garbage. The wifi range is crap so I had to buy an extender….for my 2 bedroom unit……then I am experiencing constant drop outs and sometimes full disconnects for days. Aussie Broadband keep telling me that everything is fine on their end and from what they can see, something is up with my modem. Had NBN tech come out and found nothing wrong with the line to the wall socket.

The reason why I am here looking at this deal is because I am just sick of the drop outs and want to replace with something decent. I honestly believe most people recommending these modems have zero experience with them and are just parroting what everyone else is saying on whirlpool to seem like they are techy. I have this modem, it is shit and it's going in the bin as soon as I buy a better one.

@baker bob: Gotta agree. It's pretty overrated. Previous tenant left behind a DJA0230 modem router and it has a wifi range of about 7m? Pretty terrible.

        • Hi, I’m looking for a modem as my new house is FTTN. I currently am using the eero system in my old house with HFC. I’m trying to figure out the best set up. Just wondering whether the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 would work? And would I be able to connect soemthing like the eero as a wifi extender?

          • @chocohoney: You can take whatever piece of rubbish router the RSP at your new house provides and plug the eero into that. If you don't need a home phone you can put the RSP router into bridge mode and if you do need a home phone, run it off the RSPs router and double NAT using the eero in the DMZ, this will be fine for most normal household needs.

If you do go with the Telstra router, you can try using it without the eero and see what kind of performance and coverage you get. Do some speed tests in different rooms and compare it to the eero to see what's better.

One or the other is best though, not both, your devices won't hand off properly to the different WAPs.

Do you reckon is worth the Xiaomi ax6000 for a wireless NBN, or is it overkill? I've read a lot of good things about it, but saving some bucks would be good! I need the better connection possible, but because my internet sucks I can't expect miracles. I'm also having a look at the Xiaomi ax3600

EDIT: this was meant to be an answer to Metro2450

    • What is wireless NBN?Fixed wireless in regional area?

I have both AX3600 and AX6000 running at home.

Suggestion? Unless you want to use the 2.5GbE port for your wired LAN(eg:NAS), AX3600 is good enough.

Someone May argue AX6000 support 160MHz mode but in reality, 160MHz doesn’t give good coverage and rarely supported by client devices.

      • Yes, fixed wireless in North East Victoria. So do you reckon that ax3600 is good enough? There's not much difference in price between 3600 and 6000 though. Maybe Ax6000 is more future proof? Just guessing…

        • +2

AX3600 is more future proof on software side, because openwrt development on AX3600 is on horizon. Experimental firmware build was released. People bought AX3600 are basically just waiting for some more stable codes to be released.

          • @Metro2450: Thanks, so do you think that they will not develop a openwrt version for the Ax6000?

            • +3

@deedend: Right now only RedMi AX6, XiaoMi AX3600 and AX9000 have significant openwrt breakthrough.

Firmwares can be downloaded from https://github.com/robimarko/openwrt/releases

              • @Metro2450: Thanks mate, I've pulled the trigger on the AX3600

              • @Metro2450: These guys are really hammering this bunch of routers because they are so close to getting it working properly and these are some of the first AX (WiFi 6) routers they've got working, and because they're cheap. Last I read a few weeks back they had openwrt running properly except for a few memory leaks that required the router to be rebooted about once a day, but I think it was this guy, robimarko, who had some potential fixes and was pushing things forward rapidly.

Bunnings are clearing them out currently, I've seen them at both Leopold and Torquay Stores in Victoria for around $130.

  • I have the 2600 version of this, depending on what you need its not a bad modem/router.
It most likely won't get any more firmware updates and it's not DD-WRT listed.
The IP reservation is pretty unhelpful.
It has dynamic DNS but only to DynDNS, No-IP, ZoneEdit, and DLinkDDNS.
And it doesn't have a VPN function.
Does the job and has lasted a few years but not as feature rich as you might like.

  • been looking for router modem combo but am i just being picky when i want a 2 in 1. Would it be more practical to utilise a modem router seperately?

    • Your choice of 2 in 1s is very limited, even more so if you need a home phone. Far better IMHO to use your RSPs modem/router either in bridge mode to a far superior router or mesh system or even double NAT to it is better.

It would have been better again if the whole NBN was FTTP but we won't go there.

Why would anyone buy an old modem router with so many bad reviews?

Date First Available: 12 December 2018

  • Is there a router modem that i can plug in my coaxial cable so i can get rid of my nbn box?
I hate the 2 boxes set up at the moment.

    • Nah you can't remove the nbn NTD.

HFC = nbn NTD + router.

  • Hey guys, with office works price beat do all stores do amazon price beat? Or only at manager discretion?
